Slowly rolled out across the seasons, so check before you buy.  People think it's because it's going to be streamed on HBO at some point.  Think it's itunes atm.

I have the complete collection in a DVD box set, but I'm wondering now if it's worth getting it digitally if they've actually touched them up a bit. I know it's all available on Amazon but I assume those are just the same as the DVD versions?

Yeah. I'm watching the Amazon versions and they are the low quality 16:9 ones.  An upgrade would be nice.

It seems the new versions are not so much a remaster, but a re colour grading with the aspect ratio reverted to the 4:3 broadcast original. Still better though, especially for the CG apparently. Apparently the CG they redid for Star Trek TNG cost something like $20m, and B5 had loads more CG stuff so I doubt we'll ever get a true remaster.

Mind you, surely if someone had the models, they could recreate the shots in Unreal Engine 4 or something?

(Someone burst my hope bubble)

@Benny there's a reasonably good torrent called "Babylon 5 Remaster Reencoded", which I switched to for my rewatch when I realised my Ultimate Collection DVD set looked shite. It's still 16:9 but it looks and sounds great - although the colour grading is veering a tiny bit towards soap opera.

It's a re-encode of a fan's "Babylon 5 Remaster Project" done in 2014.

At some point this should become doable in real time, currently takes somewhere around 10 hours on a 2080ti per episode (without using the specialised AI cores). https://www.extremetech.com/extreme/314653-remastering-deep-space-nine

I'm just up to the end of series two in a rewatch that I started last week.

I'd forgotten most of the individual episodes but two things stand out to me.

1. The first series is much better than I remember and sets up almost all of what is to come.

2. The episode names are the best in any show.

Actual spoilers for those who might be watching for the first time (unlikely but still)

  Hide contents

Londo and G'Kar are both acted wonderfully and even knowing where this goes the tragedy is still heartbreaking.

I watched the plague episode yesterday and had forgotten the extent to which this show pulls no narrative punches.

This is my first time watching since it original aired and I'm falling in love again.

EDIT: Also, as shonky as the sets and special effects are, there should be a special mention made for the alien makeup which is mostly fucking brilliant.

I’m nearing the end of season 3. Kid-me had damn good taste when he put this ahead of everything else on tv. It’s still brilliant.

and your right - the make up for the aliens wouldn’t look out of place on discovery. It’s perfect.

The Centauri are shit! Alien haircut! Except they manage to redeem that. :)

I just watched Severed Dreams and again, ropey effects make way for thrilling set pieces and storytelling.  I've seen this so many times and I still punch the air

Spoiler

when Delenn turns up.

The visual storytelling is still incredible.

What could these people have done with modern effects, a bigger budget and a guaranteed 5 years?

I started this after finishing DS9. DS9 was so much better than I remember (I hated it at the time for stealing the concept from Babylon 5) and has held up really well.

It does a lot of things better than B5, but god B5 has got heart.

It's political, so timely, and (a few crass lines aside) 'woke'.

It talks about themes and represents people of all different types so well (except Nazis - obv). It's atheistic in theme, but promotes the value of religion in people's lives, it has lots of religious characters, right wing characters (Garabaldi), communists (Ivanava).

Reboots are crass and overdone, etc, but this genuinely needs a HBO quality one. People need to see this story, and it's just not feasible as it stands.

Also, the Centauri look amazing.

I just started watching the 1st feature movie with the PS1 special effects, it all looks a bit cheap, I've got a copy of the "unspecialised"  version from Amazon which somehow managed to be the wrong region despite being sold by the local store.

Those few whinges aside , even this early some of the dialogue is fantastic and seems to hint a a much more nuanced and intelligent story that I think people laud the series for. And just to contradict an earlier point somewhat the character costumes for some of the Alien species look pretty decent and it's great that they're not all bipedal o2 breathing humanoids so the station has to allow for that.

Reading this back , the 1st 30 minutes of the movie have brought up more  intelligent & salient points than the 2 seasons of Star Trek Burham did.

First time or have you seen the series before?

1st time.

Even things like the rollercoaster type restraints on the train; shows that the people putting it together actually thought about how these things would work and what would be required.

I've just finished Intersections  in Real Time.

Spoiler

The banality of evil right there on the screen.   This show was so far ahead of its time, its from another better universe and we don't deserve it.

I'm only just realising that watching this as a teen must have helped to shape my political views.

Given that WB have apparently earned more than $500 million from the show over the years, it’s criminal that they have never authorised a Blu-Ray version and looked into uprezzing the FX. Sure, redoing every single FX shot would be very expensive (the show’s worth it, mind!), but now the tech exists to re-render the existing shots, which must be much cheaper, it’s annoying that there seems to be no sign of them modernising the show. There are a couple of YouTube vids of fan re-renders at 1080p and they look amazing.

God, imagine B5 being filmed today. What JMS could do with it.

Let’s try and keep the thread spoiler free for lolly atm eh?  Be nice to have some posts on various eps as well.  Oh but be warned, season 1 is a little rough compared to the later seasons!

Apart from the title episode. That's superb. :D

Could you clarify this? I lost track of the B5 special effects debacle back I got the DVDs and found out they had to crop and stretch the 4:3 NTSC composites to 16:9.

Oh god, that's so sad :(

I was just struck the other week by how she completely owns her character from the very first episode, while everyone else is still finding their feet. Such a wonderful actor.
