The Jazz Thread

I've only been into and listening to jazz for about 26 years.  I've only read a few books on jazz and I definitely haven't explored as much as I would like to.  Sometimes I find new artists, usually I have heard of them.  Anyway I just heard this on 6Music (Gilles Peterson)

Wow absolutely blown away.  Never heard of Mary Lou Williams and there is so much soul in her playing.  Off to find more.

Yeah, that is really special. A definite purchase imminent.

I really don't own enough Jazz by women, but what I do own is really incredible stuff. Take this spine-tinglingly beautiful rendition of Wonder Why by Sarah Vaughan. The piercing tone-perfect clarity of her voice genuinely gives me chills.

This probably isn't  the right thread but Badbadnotgood are playing Perth in December and I've got tickets, might not seem like a big deal but considering how isolated this place is and how rare it is that a gig by a band I actually like  is on I am fucking ecstatic, as in punching the air ecstatic , haven't been to a gig in over 5 years.

So apologies if you've read this and  thought "meh whatever" but I needed to get that out there.

Their entire raison d'etre is to make beats yet their album with Ghostface is a fucking disgrace of pure distilled waste.

Sad.

Its not that bad an LP, I put it on now and again. Maybe its not Brand New Heavies enough for you?

Back to Dalawacchhhkkk for you

I don't mind you bob, but fuck off with your ad hominem snide comments. I call it as I see it musically and generally like your knowledge if not your opinions.

Its really childish to try and undermine someone by saying but lol you like insert whatever.

If I say something is shit there's no subtext it's because I think it's shit and I'll happily justify it.

You buy far too much into hagiography and what is critically acceptable.

Don't dish it out if you can't take it. Put BadBadNotGood in the worst crimes in music thread if you think they are shit. Don't bust into a jazz thread where a few people seem to like them. I stay out of the metal thread full time to avoid such traps. Go for the easy life.

Thanks for the fuck you. And for the record, I don't listen to or buy what I'm told to, despite your current and previous attacks in my direction on this very subject.

Dinosaur album Together, As One is out this week.

Reminds me of early electric Miles.

Thanks for the recommendation, just listened today on Spotify, will definitely be buying. First track very reminiscent of 70s Miles, but it quickly develops a sound of its own. Lovely stuff.

Can anyone recommend me anything similar/as good as Viaticum by Esbjörn Svensson Trio, please? Heard it for the first time recently and would love more music in this style. Thanks for any pointers, I realise it's probably a tough call.

You know I've been thinking about this a bit since you posted it, and realised I was initially only considering other piano trios, when of course there is a lot of jazz with a similar structure but a different format. For instance I think it shares a lot with something like Footprints by Wayne Shorter.

Where the bass lays out some simple repeating lines, which the other instruments solo over, and it has that minor key feel about it. Not sure if it appeals in the same way, but it's always worth listening to Wayne Shorter.

Also as The Heirophant mentions Herbie Hancock's Maiden Voyage has a similar feel to it.

Personally I can't listen to this tune enough.

Having acquired a new record player, I've picked up up loads of the Towson state jazz ensemble lp's (can't believe the quality of vinyl after years of listening to cds. Great to hear it again after decades.

is is one of my favs - the third track (warp factor v) is awesome.

Surely the mastering and equipment is more important?  Vinyl has no inherent superiority to CDs.

True, but it sounds better on vinyl for the most part. There are so many different factors that are different for vinyl sound to hit the eardrums. The arm, cartridge and stylus, phono stage etc. all are seriously variable, a lot more so than digital, especially CD

And I would have thought that variability would be more likely to make vinyl sound worse.
