Like others, I am using the increased time at home to catch up with some classics. Today, Saxophone Colossus by Sonny Rollins.

Today’s revisited classic is Bright Size Life by Pat Metheny, featuring the wonderful talent of Jaco Pastorius. Here’s the title track.

Richie Cole has sadly passed away. I've posted the vocal version of this standard before, but this is such a lovely record.

Yeah, the version of Summertime on that record still blows my mind.

My favourite version is this:

George Shearing was your great Uncle! Awesome claim to fame. He was a prodigious talent. For an Englishman to succeed playing Jazz in America in the 50s he'd have to be.

There's a great photograph of old Uncle George (I feel I can call him that now) by Herman Leonard that I've always really liked.

You can still see the Englishness shining through.

Yep, my Nan's brother. Never met him though

Great pic. My favourite cultural reference to him is the wild description of him playing in On The Road. It seems almost at odds with most of his output.

The drum sound means that these compositions could easily border into Drum and Bass and electronic music, as well as jazz, but thought this would be the best thread to give them exposure.

The playing from both of these kids is incredible DOMi & JD Beck

GoGo Penguin’s self titled new album is just fantastic. Thoughts @The Hierophant?

I’m a huge fan, seen them half a dozen times but I was a bit underwhelmed.  It’s not jazzy enough, it needs more hooks and doesn’t really move their sound forward.

Maybe I was in a bad mood when I listened to it. I will give it some more time.

Edit: I am sure I am being unfair and just need to listen properly.
