Can we do top 10's of the classics?

Okay...

Black Star - Hate the chorus.

You and Whose Army - Okay, but doesn't hit the heights it should, so just sounds like a missed oppurtunity every time I listen.

Killer Cars - Nice pop song, but nowhere near their best.

All I Need - One of the worst songs they've ever done, dreadful lyrics and an awful chorus. The clash of instruments at the end saves it from complete crapness.

Lozenge of Love - Grates to me.

The rest I love, but I'd never recommend House of Cards due to the huge split it brings (many find it very dull).

Incredibly over-the-top, but you asked. All imho obv m8 soz ok bi.

I like All I Need but otherwise have to agree. If I had to delete 10 Radiohead songs from my library those would be four of them

I picked 4 of the 10 you'd delete, lol.

To the OP, you wouldn't recommend a song because you know some don't like it? I had strength in posting songs I like, despite them probably not being my top 10. As I said before some greedy basts nicked some of the most popular ones for their lists.

Another Eno request please. And a Rush top 10 would be great too.

thingymajig did a good one back on p.2

Bastille Day - live (Different Stages)

2112 (2112)

Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres (Hemispheres)

Freewill (Permanent Waves)

Jacob's Ladder (Permanent Waves)

Natural Science (Permanent Waves)

Red Barchetta (Moving Pictures)

Subdivisions (Signals)

Afterimage (Grace Under Pressure)

Marathon (Power Windows)

No Spirit of the Radio or Closer to the Heart though.

Wilco

Kamera

Impossible Germany

A Shot In The Arm

Ashes Of American Flags

Spiders (Kidsmoke)

Handshake Drugs

Sunken Treasure

At Least That's What you Said

Summer Teeth

Radio Cure

The Live album is better than the albums and contains most of them. Studio versions are still ace, though.

Since they seem to be glaring omissions so far:

The Rolling Stones

Gimme Shelter (Let It Bleed)

Paint It, Black (Aftermath)

Sympathy for the Devil (Beggars Banquet)

Ventilator Blues (Exile on Main Street)

Jumpin' Jack Flash (Single)

Memo From Turner (Performance OST)

Shine A Light (Exile on Main Street)

Monkey Man (Let It Bleed)

No Expectations (Beggars Banquet)

(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction (Single)

cover499_24663.jpg

This is the ideal way in.

Iggy Pop/The Stooges

1970 (Fun House)

Down on the Street (Fun House)

The Passenger (Lust for Life)

Dirt (Fun House)

Lust for Life (Lust for Life)

I Wanna Be Your Dog (The Stooges)

Search and Destroy (Raw Power)

Nightclubbing (The Idiot)

TV Eye (Fun House)

Gimme Danger (Raw Power)

Very tough, especially since I didn't want to leave any out just because they're more famous than the others. Could have come out with so many other tens for those two.

A gift

Romeo had Juliette

Dirty Boulevard

What's good

Magic and Loss

Alternative list :

Berlin (from the first solo album - featuring Rick Wakeman on keyboards, fact fans)

Ride into the sun

Vicious

Andy's chest

Kill your sons

Metal Music Machine (Part IV - on vinyl)

Intro/sweet Jane (Live on Rock'n'roll animal)

Heroin (Live on Rock'n'roll animal)

Street Hassle

Walk on the wild side (Live on Take no prisoners)

Is this a good list? I've got a feeling that I won't like the Rolling Stones but I want to give it a go. Since I've left it this long I'd like to make it one that's a good one. I think Sympathy For The Devil's a bit rubbish personally. Incredibly I'd rather listen to the Guns N Roses version.

There doesn't appear to be a top 10 for Michael Jackson, so I'm going to try.

6. Stranger In Moscow

7. Blood on The Dance Floor

10. Earth Song

Probably missed a few out but I think that list is more or less okay.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!?

My Stones list

1) Gimme Shelter

2) Rip This Joint

3) Torn and Frayed

4) Dead Flowers

5) Wild Horses

6) Monkey Man

7) Rocks Off

:o I can't get no satisfaction

9) Brown Sugar

10) Sympathy for the devil

11) Memo from Turner

12) Shine a light

Of course it's good, it's mine. Sympathy for the Devil isn't one of my favourite songs of theirs but I felt it should be in any ten that's meant for someone who's never heard them before. Get yourself Exile On Main Street and that London Years compilation and you'll have most of their best stuff.

Sympathy is brilliant, certainly. And the GnR version (as with any other cover GnR did) is a joke. There are a few other Stones songs which display good and clever writing skills and I give them credit for that. But I don't personally enjoy listening to them simply because they couldn't play in time/with each other. The drummer in particular conspires to ruin most of their good songs all on his own (see 'Get Off My Cloud' or whatever it's called).

Despite the vast number of Rolling Stones compilations that have been released, there don't seem to be any that are really "perfect". The London Years compilation and this new one don't have the later songs Start Me Up or It's Only Rock & Roll. Forty Licks does, but it leaves off Come On, We Love You, Dandelion and I Wanna Be Your Man - instead it has several new songs that no-one really cares about.

I haven't heard much other than those songs that get put on compilations - one of my favourites is She's A Rainbow (and not just since the Bravia advert!). I know my library has Let It Bleed and Beggars Banquet, so I really ought to get them out.

1. Billie Jean

3.

6.

7.

8.

9. Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough

10.

This is how your list looks with the real essentials left in. In fact, Thriller is highly debatable as a top ten tune.

That's because they weren't released in 'The London Years'

I can't say I'm fussed about either of those songs myself though, they were already well into self-parody by that point.

I'll chance my hand with an MJ selection:

Don't Stop Til You Get Enough

Rock With You

Thriller

Billie Jean

Bad

P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)

The Lady In My Life

I Just Can't Stop Loving You

Scream (with Janet Jackson)

Earth Song

It was a pretty tough choice, the first 5 are pretty much standard, the other 5 could have been anything really. Personally I'd just take the Off The Wall LP but the first disc of HIStory has a pretty decent selection on too.

NO NO NO! I know it's entirely subjective, but blinking flip! Still, a much better effort overall. You're right about Off The Wall, too. You need at least three tracks off there.

I'll do one in a bit that you can rip the piss out of. I need to do a definitive Prince one as well, larrydavidsanger's one is nice, but misses too many classics.

Michael Jackson

Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough (Off The Wall)

Rock with You (Off The Wall)

Off the Wall (Off The Wall)

Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' (Thriller)

The Girl Is Mine (Thriller)

Billie Jean (Thriller)

Human Nature (Thriller)

P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) (Thriller)

The Way You Make Me Feel (Bad)

Remember the Time (Dangerous)

With 'Ben' and 'Smooth Criminal' just bubbling under.

EDIT: And Thriller...although I guess you might just as well say buy 'Off The Wall' and 'Thriller' and be done with it.

I dont know disco volante very well (their 2nd album) but from the first and last albums i'd recommend:

Quote unquote (s/t)

Slowly growing deaf (s/t)

Egg (s/t)

Girls of Porn (s/t)

Love is a fist (s/t)

None of them knew they were robots (California)

Retrovertigo (California)

the air conditioned nightmare (California)

Ars Moriendi (California)

Vanity fair (California)

Good calls, but here's your list tweaked a bit with Disco Volante tracks added.

Desert Search for Techno Allah (Disco Volante)

Chemical Marriage (Disco Volante)

Merry Go Bye Bye (Disco Volante)

Damn I just had a quick flick through the first Mr Bungle album, there is not one bad track on it. Brilliant stuff. A much underappreciated band.

I got those a few months ago when Music Zone Virgin had them for £5 for both. Big disappointment - the songs I already knew (Don't Stop Till You Get Enough, Beat It, Billie Jean, Thriller) were great, but I wasn't keen on most of the others. I'm sorry, but I think The Girl is Mine is one of the worst Paul McCartney songs I've heard. :)

I should have got a Best Of instead, at least then I would have got Smooth Criminal and Bad.

2. Game of Pricks

3. I Am a Scientist

4. Everywhere With Helicopter

5. Hot Freaks

6. Huffman Prairie Flying Field

7. The Official Ironmen Rally Song

8. Not Behind the Fighter Jet

9. Big Boring Wedding

10. Don't Stop Now

Somewhat agree. The Girl Is Mine? Really?

I looked at the original list that was posted a few days ago and thought about doing my own, but really I couldn't. More because I think, apart from the obvious ones, Billie Jean, Beat It, Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' etc, there's not too many other songs that you can argue over or that are sort of underrated classics or anything. I find it to be simply Billie Jean, Beat It and so on.

Good songs, but you look at other lists and people are suggesting B sides, songs from soundtracks, live albums etc. Songs that, if anyone wants to get into that artist, they'll quite possibly not have heard before. I think everyone must have heard the top 10 Michael Jackson, because that's all you're likely to hear for a reason.

That sounds really harsh. I used to love him when I was younger. And having just said that, I do like Another Part Of Me.

I'd actually quite like to check them out, thanks PrimeAran... Aren't they on K or have something to do with Calvin Johnson?

I'm not personally aware of any links with Calvin Johnson, although all I know for certain is that they were never on K Records. Still, if you're into lo-fi indie rock there really is no better band.

Don't apologise, it's taken me nearly twenty-five years to really appreciate it. Still, it is one of the ten best Michael Jackson tunes, which is why it's on my definitive list. I knew it would raise a couple of eyebrows!
