Can we do top 10's of the classics?

kerraig UK

Recommended Posts

I'll post my top 10 Joy Division, in no order and leaving the obvious Love Will Tear Us Apart out;

1. Disorder

2. Novelty

3. Shadowplay

4. Insight

5. New Dawn Fades

6. Atmosphere

7. Interzone

8. She's Lost Control

9. Dead Souls

10. Transmission

Thats without delving into their early stuff, which is just as good, but really quite different from the Joy Division we know. Really hard for me to whittle that down to just 10 tracks as I pretty much adore the whole lot. If you listen to any of the above and enjoy it and want more, my advice would be to get the Heart and Soul boxset. A fantastic collection with a mixture of earlier songs and fantastic live versions too.

No Radiohead?

Oh go on then...

Obvious 10:

Creep (Pablo Honey)

Just (Bends)

Street Spirit (Bends)

Paranoid Android (OK Computer)

No Suprises (OK Computer)

The National Anthem (Kid A)

Idioteque (Kid A)

Pyramid Song (Amnesiac)

There There (Hail to the Thief)

Jigsaw Falling into Place (In Rainbows)

That was difficult.

Alternative 10:

My Iron Lung (Bends)

Exit Music (for a film) (OK Computer)

Climbing up the Walls (OK Computer)

Talk Show Host (Romeo & Juliet OST/Street Spirit CDS 1 Track 2)

Optimistic (Kid A)

How to Disappear Completely (Kid A)

Idioteque (Live) (I Might Be Wrong-Live Recordings)

True Love Waits (Live) (I Might Be Wrong-Live Recordings)

Reckoner (In Rainbows)

15 Step (In Rainbows)

Also very difficult. And by no means exhaustive.

Hang on, someone's 'done' a Radiohead one. Mine are better. In the nicest possible way.

Fuxache.

I blame rum-induced blindness.

Some one should do a Fall one though. And James Brown.

An attempt at a James Brown ten:

Get it Together

Ain't It Funky Now

There Was A Time

It's A New Day

Super Bad

Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved

People Get Up and Drive Your Funky Soul

I Don't Want Nobody To Give Me Nothing

Say It Loud (I'm Black and I'm Proud)

I can't stand myself (when you touch me)

The problem with James Brown is that virtually all my favourite tracks of his are the extended/alternative takes, or live versions. The shorter "Greatest Hits" versions aren't a patch on them. If you want to start with James Brown, don't buy a best of from HMV or something - get the Star Time boxset (there seems to be two versions) which is an incredible bargain for £20 and has some of the best soul/funk you'll ever hear.

Or someone here could always sign up and do a slot of their own! :D

I do play a fair few of these artists in my shows and sometimes in 'artist retrospective' sets, and (like most people) if I were to / have had to put an artist set together I'd very likely play a very different 10 tracks than those chosen here in most cases. It's all a bit subjective innit? So come along and do your own set, man...we're a bit short of active DJs these days (and, it has to be said, active listeners. Harrumph).

I heartily co-sign this too, everyone should have a go if they've got the time.

Some one should do a Fall one though.

I'll give that one a crack, although they're definitely one band where no-one will ever agree with anyone else's choices.. I'm not much of a fan of their 90's stuff so it's not going to cover all the bases.

Dr. Buck's Letter (The Unutterable)

Prole Art Threat (Palace of Swords Reversed)

C.R.E.E.P. (The Wonderful and Frightening World of The Fall)

I Am Damo Suzuki (This Nation's Saving Grace)

Blindness (Fall Heads Roll)

The NWRA (Grotesque)

Big New Prinz (I Am Kurious Oranj)

Two Librans (The Unutterable)

The Classical (Hex Enduction Hour)

Cruisers Creek (This Nation's Saving Grace)

No doubt I'd pick another ten tomorrow.

OK everyone else has done this but this is the real list :D

Radiohead

(nice dream) (The Bends) - if you think that you're strong enough

Fake Plastic Trees (The Bends) - if I could be who you wanted

Talk Show Host (but NOT the Romeo & Juliet version) - I want to be someone else or I'll explode

Let Down (OK Computer) - one day I am gonna grow wings

Exit Music (for a film) (OK Computer) - we hope your rules and wisdom choke you

How to Disappear Completely (Kid A) - in a little while I'll be gone

Motion Picture Soundtrack (Kid A) - red wine and sleeping pills help me get back in your arms

Like Spinning Plates (I Might Be Wrong live recordings) - while you make pretty speeches, I'm being cut to shreds

True Love Waits (I Might Be Wrong live recordings) - I'm not living, I'm just killing time

Bodysnatchers (In Rainbows) - has the light gone out for you? 'cos the light's gone out for me

It's dissapointing that most of the artists I like don't have a substantial back catalog for me to plunder. Here is a Jamiroquai top 10 that avoids the more obvious stuff (apart from Space Cowboy, which I just couldn't leave out).

Just Another Story (Return of the Space Cowboy)

You Are My Love (Travelling Without Moving)

If I Like It, I Just Do It (Emergency On Planet Earth)

Music Of The Mind (Emergency On Planet Earth)

Blow Your Mind (Emergency On Planet Earth)

Falling (Synkronized)

Journey To Arnhemland (Return of the Space Cowboy)

Space Cowboy (Return of the Space Cowboy)

Feel So Good (Synkronized)

Don't Give Hate A Chance (Dynamite)

The Chemical Brothers

Life is Sweet (Exit Planet Dust)

In Dust We Trust (Exit Planet Dust)

Leave Home (Exit Planet Dust)

Elektrobank (Dig Your Own Hole)

Where Do I Begin? (Dig Your Own Hole)

The Private Psychedelic Reel (Dig Your Own Hole)

Galvanise (Push The Button)

Hold Tight London (Push the Button)

Surface to Air (Push the Button)

Burst Generator (We are the Night)

(I've not included Hey Boy Hey Girl and Star Guitar simply because they're pretty much the most famous tracks)

DJ Premier Productions:

Freddie Foxxx - R.N.S.

Royce Da 5'9 - Boom

KRS One - Outta Here

Nas - NY State of Mind

Group Home - Livin' Proof

Notorious B.I.G. - Kick In The Door

Gang Starr - Code of the Streets

Non-Phixion - Rock Stars

Jeru the Damaja - Come Clean

Gang Starr - DWYCK

I fully expect some of the heads to come in and here and rip this 10 to shreds though, an impossible task.

Prince

Controversy

Kiss

I Would Die 4 U

Let's Go Crazy

Purple Rain

7

Dirty Mind

Erotic City

Sign O'The Times

Raspberry Beret

Sometimes It Snows In April

Starfish & Coffee (Just a perfect little pop song that never gets any credit)

A mix of the well known and ones that don't get airplay

I tried doing one, but I would have to have all those tracks and about 30 others. Where would my life be without 'Pussy Control' or 'Gett Off' for instance? Nowhere, that's where.

I'm gonna have a proper look at my Preemo collection and come back and attempt an alternative list here, aye! Though I think you're spot on with these:

Nas - NY State of Mind

Group Home - Livin' Proof

Non-Phixion - Rock Stars

Jeru the Damaja - Come Clean

Gang Starr - DWYCK

I've also been thinking about a definitive Wu-Tang/RZA productions list, dipping into all of the essential solo tracks and posse cuts. Now that will be hard.
