I’ll do the Pogues

Thousands are Sailing

Lullaby of London

White City

Misty Morning, Albert Bridge (3 songs about London)

The Body of an American (As heard in 2 episodes of The Wire, fact fans)

A Pair of Brown Eyes

The Broad Majestic Shannon

Rainy Night in Soho

Bottle of Smoke

The song with no name - This is a Shane solo effort but it belongs in the top ten.

Anyone able to do one for 'They Might Be Giants'?

Always wanted to listen to more of their stuff but never got around to it...

I can't help much but I remeber loving Flood. Not heard it for ages though. Particle Man is a classic mind. Download that.

Just Like Heaven (Greatest Hits)

They Might Be Giants, but only from the first album up until "Factory Showroom" :

Everything Right Is Wrong Again (They Might Be Giants)

Rabid Child (They Might Be Giants)

Ana Ng (Lincoln)

Kiss Me, Son Of God (Lincoln)

Hey Mr. DJ I Thought You Said We Had A Deal (Miscellaneous : T)

Birdhouse In Your Soul (Flood)

We Want A Rock (Flood)

Which Describes How You're Feeling (Apollo 18)

Sleeping In The Flowers (John Henry)

The Bells Are Ringing (Factory Showroom)

...in all honesty, though, I'd listen to the first four albums and forget everything since. As soon as they get a "proper" band, it's over.

I could have filled this list with 90 second stupid songs like "Boat Of Car" and "Toddler Hiway", no problem, so the list is slightly more "mainstream" than it could have been.

No snailshell? I love that song.

I might try and attempt a Ween one at some point tomorrow.

As for feedback, i'll definately be posting something about a few of these in the next couple of days. All ive been listening to recently is stuff off this list and its opened my eyes to a lot of interesting things (sch as that I think prince is unbelievable shit).

Ha! I'd always assumed he was, but then I'd also heard he was an amazing guitarist so he was kind of on my "To Do" list.

Looking forward to hearing the dislikes almost as much as the likes.

I read 'unbelievable shit' as a positive. Oh, the pitfalls of language.

kerraig's only hope of retaining any credibility on here is to confirm that he did indeed mean it as a positive. The Prince list was fairly pedestrian, but still light years ahead in terms of musical quality than any other artist in the thread so far. Apart from Abba, maybe.

For The Band, you can't go wrong as introductions go with their self-titled effort: Rag Mama Rag is a particular highlight, but none of it disappoints. Throw in a few tracks from their Dylan-backed first album Music from Big Pink (The Weight being the most famous and quite fantastic of those) and you'll be well on your way. They're fucking mint.

Here's my Top 10 for one of my favourite bands, the criminally-unknown Harvey Danger, so please do yourselves a favour and check them out.

1. Sad Sweetheart Of The Rodeo

2. The Thrilling Conversation You've Been Waiting For

3. Carlotta Valdez (lyrically, one for the Vertigo and Hitchcock lovers out there)

4. Happiness Writes White

5. Jack The Lion

6. Meetings With Remarkable Men

7. Loyalty Bldg

8. Wine, Women And Song

9. Why I'm Lonely

10. Terminal Annex

You'll notice that their biggest (or rather, only) hit, Flagpole Sitta, which is the theme song to Peep Show from Series 2 onwards, doesn't even make the list. It's a good song, but these are all better. When quality comes in quantity, you know you're winning big.

P.S.

This thread is the tops.

As much as I like Prince I'll have to assume that this comment was made out of touching solidarity with Kerraig, to martyr yourself and go down with him in his sinking ship (the U.S.S. Credibilty).

Well they're all classics for me :P

I'll give Megadeth a go without anything from Rust In Peace

1. Mechanix (Killing Is My Business)

7. High Speed Dirt (Countdown to Extinction)

8. Ashes in Your Mouth (Countdown to Extinction)

9. Reckoning Day (Youthanasia)

10. Sleepwalker (United Abominations)

Obviously no record collection is complete without Rust In Peace.

1. Over the Shoulder (Twitch)

2. Stigmata (Land of Rape and Honey)

3. Eureka Pile (Dark Side of the Spoon)

4. Burning Inside (Mind Is A Terrible Thing to Taste)

5. So What (Mind Is A Terrible Thing to Taste)

6. Reload (Filth Pig)

7. No W (Houses of the Molé)

8. Warp City (Houses of the Molé)

9. Señor Peligro (Rio Grande Blood)

10. Die In A Crash (The Last Sucker)

7. Antisocial (State of Euphoria)

8. Be All, End All (State of Euphoria)

9. Keep It in the Family (Persistence of Time)

10 Belly Of The Beast (Persistence of Time)

And my NIN List

(alt, without the hits can't do a top ten)

1. Ringfinger

2. Happiness In Slavery

3. A Warm Place

4. Ruiner

5. Art of Self Destruction Part 2

6. Pilgrimage

7. Just Like You Imagined

8. I'm Looking Forward to Joining You, Finally

Ah, cool. I'm really only just getting into Dylan properly (Freewheelin' for Christmas) but I've always heard good things about The Band. I think Davros has spoken about them a few times which piqued my interest.

Any suggestions for Elvis and Clapton (whether in Cream, solo or whatever. Or one for each or something.) Elvis could probably be sorted with one of his 400 million greatest hits albums, but I didn't know if there was anything off one of his proper albums worth getting, or if a "Best Of" really is all I should stick to.

Yeah, I could talk about The Band all day.

As Tequila says, the enponymous 2nd album is where it's at. What a cool, moody cover:

TheBand.jpg

I love this whole "Mountain Men" mystery they built up amongst themselves, just retreating into the woods to make this incredibly rootsy, honest music. Not a bad track on the album, and the making of, from the Classic Albums series, is also very good. I would also recommend:

This Wheel's On Fire (Music from Big Pink)

Caledonia Mission (Music from Big Pink)

Katie's Been Gone (Big Pink Outtake)

Get Up Jake (Rock of Ages live album)

The Rumour (Stage Fright)

The Weight is a classic song, but really the version on The Last Waltz is definitive. In fact, if you want an introduction to The Band (as well as special guests like Joni Mitchell, Neil Diamond, Derek Crapton etc, etc), go straight to a DVD of The Last Waltz, Filmed by Martin Scorsese in 1976.

This clip of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down sends shivers down my spine.

Gnarly old hillbilly drummers from Arkansas who sing and play at the same time FTW!

Here's my Radiohead:

1. The National Anthem (Live)

2. Paranoid Android

3. Nude

4. Just

5. Idioteque

6. There There (unmastered version)

7. Lucky

8. Bodysnatchers

9. My Iron Lung

10. The Tourist

Though I could just as easily do a B-sides collection:

1. Down Is The New Up

2. Talk Show Host

3. Like Spinning Plates (live)

4. Gagging Order

5. Pearly*

6. Cuttooth

7. Bangers and Mash

8. Meeting In The Aisle

9. Palo Alto

10. Four Minute Warning

Hmmm interesting I loved Flagpole Sitta when it came out. I have the single. Never bought anything else by them but will take a look now. Flagpole Sitta does have one of my favourite Lyrics of all time though

"Fingertips have memories, Mine can't forget the curves of your body"

Oh and

"Been around the World and found that only stupid people are breeding"
