My first hour with Zelda

1. Play Portal.

2. Check the short games thread.

3. Play some of those

4. Realise that you're wrong

5. ????

6. Profit!

I'll be getting The Orange Box for Christmas so I will get around to playing Portal. Nothing I've heard about it suggests that it's the same type of game though.

I don't think it's a good idea to say all games have to be a certain length. Do you really think you could make a good Zelda game that only lasted a couple of hours like Portal does?

You could have put the Portal mechanic in Zelda and it would work just as well.

TPs biggest flaw is the fishing task at the beginning of the game - it doesn't explain it properly and I can imagine folks who are trying a game like this for the first time being really put off by it. Which would be a shame.

The

spinner

is the best item in a zelda game ever.

Totally agree with this. That fishing bit nearly made me break my wiimote.

Loved the new item though.

It's a great game, although the dungeons are too easy (like all recent Zelda games).

I didn't like it, it had no soul and seemed packed with filler.

By the second dungeon I'd worked out the 'go to new area, get stuck, travel all the way across the map to some settlement you've already been to get a new ability, go all the way back again, etc' that seemed to directly precede the first three.

I loved it. I can see why a lot of people who have played every Zelda might be tired of the series and TP was a kind of Best of.., but I'm sure a lot of new gamers that the Wii brought in where taken in by the magic. I know my GF was.

Although what was up with that awful death mountain backround though?

havent finished it (im in sky temple) but i still enjoyed the majority of the game.

Some of the dungeons are pure genious, but there is a sense of deja vu if you have played previous 3d zelda games.

I thought the controls as a whole were fine.

But I can understand some people just dont get on with it.

I felt that compared to previous Zeldas, the game felt somewhat empty. Well the dungeons on the whole were fine, but the overworld just wasnt filled with enough secrets etc

The first hour is crap compared to the rest of the game..

You HAVE to finish the Sky Temple. The boss battle is immense.

In this thread we discover who are the people who enjoy playing the same tired game again and again and again, as long as it has a bit of polish.

Get Okami, it's loads better. And more charming.

This is bullshit, Okami as good as it is runs out of ideas after 18 hours and it's a slog-a-thon to the end after that. TP is fantastic, the dungeons (which Zelda is about) are numerous, inventive and fun, there's terrific boss battles. I find it hard to fault.

In terms of combat, Okami is by far the more enjoyable experience, IMO. It continues to evolve long after you've seen everything TP has to offer. TP is the better game overall though.

You are talking about a Zelda game right?

This would be the series that survives on essentially having 90%* of the same content in each installment and then some "gimmick" to justify the reason for the next release?

*(slight exaggeration)

Isn't that the reason people buy Zelda games, the familar with something new? It's why I buy them, much as I'm enjoying Phantom Hourglass it's for me not as good as TP. Refering to the WW v TP debate, graphically WW was amazing but TP is a far more substantive game, WW's sailing bored the pants off me, which was a pity as there was so much more potential there.

How much of the actual combat Okami had to offer did you acutally use though, I didn't like the way it kinda forced you into fights sometimes, it felt a bit like random JPRG battles. I'm sticking by my opinion that it's a good 18 hour game, and they though "Oh fuck we better stretch this out to 40". Okami is Zelda lite, albeit with a far superior script and a good does of humor, then again Zelda has never been about the story.

I hardly ever avoided a random fight. I was always trying to improve technique to win fangs to spend on new moves, and it was immensely satisfying to get better and better at them. Plus it was just damn good fun, and I didn't find it ever got boring. How can you get bored of pissing on an enemy? Quite simply, it puts Zelda to shame in that respect.

Zelda's very much about the story to me. I think it beat Okami hands down in that respect. OOT's narrative was beautiful and haunting in so many simple, subtle ways. The only thing better is MM, which is still on a plateau all of its own IMO.

I often wonder why they didnt do a Directors cut of WW. Didnt they have the last few dungeons set up but decided to cut them in the final stages? Resulting in that awful sea hunt.

I enjoyed TP a fair-bit - apart from the retarded save system - upto the 'chase the wagon around the field' bit...

It was frustrating and annoying - the control system gave you RSI - it was just a bit wank - so I gave-up on it.

The prospect of more 'you can't save part-way-through' dungeons wasn't greatly appealing either tbh
