The rusty metal looks great there!

I managed to finish a second marine, but I found it so exhausting painting those never-ending thin lines. And they’re still nowhere near as precise as the GW paint jobs (naturally, because they’re the experts). It really does make you appreciate the skill involved though.

Thankfully I now have a commission in hand so I had a very pleasant evening today painting this rat:

Far more relaxing!

cool figures, those.

I’ve just accepted a job doing the new Horus figure from Forge World. Going to be fun, and thankfully I’m not assembling much of it, which helps a whole lot!

I will do so. Or at least a few :P

I may well curse the commission when I get to see the thing in the flesh. However, the Sanguinius primarch is probably slightly more detailed and fiddly, and that ended up being thoroughly enjoyable, so I'm hoping this will be the same!

Tell me if this is too personal a question, but is painting your full time job, Joe?

How DARE you pry into my life...

:P

It's not a full-time job, no. However, I split my life half and half. Half in the real world with various mundane things in retail management and other terribly annoying stuff, and the other is painting. It's a pretty good balance - I'm getting too old to do retail full-time, but on the other hand painting is a terrible lonely occupation and also one that would mean I'd become a lifeless blob if I did it all the time.

The mix makes me believe I still have at least one foot in reality, even if I don't necessarily believe that's the case ;)

After trying to work for myself for ten years and then having to go back into retail I can says no. No it's not. Fuck people.

Oh, don't get me wrong - retail now is fucking awful a lot of the time. Since Covid people have become more stupid, ruder and just generally foul nitwits. However, I do like the team I work with and they're chums and that's the main reason why I still do it.

There's a guy on Instagram who is a pretty good painter, and incredibly supportive. Always likes my stuff, posts supportive comments, puts me in his stories, etc etc. Nearly 20k followers, attended and submitted Golden Demon, etc etc. And his base rims are a disgrace. Grass and texture painted into them, all sorts of lumps and bumps. It sounds fussy but it distracts so, so much from the really rather good paint jobs. I'm dying to tell him, but I feel like it'd be rather like stamping on a puppy. Which I know sounds patronising, but he's so nice and supportive I couldn't bring myself to criticise.

But man - it's such an easy fix! You've done all the hard work and then you paint grass onto the rim which sticks out like a sore thumb!

This is the only way to do base rims IMO (at 19:50).

I like to scrape any grit or paint off them first use the Citadel mould line remover.

Anyway, I’ve had two revelations recently. First thing is that I treated myself to a set of Vallejo Model Air metallics, and they blow the Citadel ones away. I finally feel like I can edge highlight properly with metallic paint now, they’re so smooth

The second thing is that I finally upgraded my hobby lamp to this Neatfi one that I see a lot of people use:

Not only has it dramatically improved the light in which I work, it’s also meant that I’ve finally managed to take some photos on a white background with which I’m happy, following this guide:

I’m still tweaking but here are some examples:

I think black might still be my go to, but I’m glad I now have white as an option.

Well, this is going to be interesting then.

Considerably better model than the original Horus - the proportions are much, much better. Decent casting on this too - when I think back on the terrible quality of Angron, this is way better.

Lots of smaller bits still to look at though - a number of which have already broken, but nothing especially worrying!

That's a lot of skeleton bits! Will you highlight all that individually or dry brush it all? I know what I'd do!

Probably do it the usual way, lots of painting things whilst the layers are all wet and loose to build up the highlights I think. Bones and things don't tend to take too long to do - one of the few things that I've used basically the same recipe for years.
