Saints Row 2

Hear hear! The cars were underwhelming and lacked the cinematic pleasure curving a muscle car perfectly round the apex of a corner brings in GTA.

Saints Row really was enjoyable, it didn't really have the panache and integrity of GTA stylistically but it was definitely one of the better games i played. Had some really fucking frustrating missions but you could start them from the action part straight away. I don't think i reloaded once in that game while if i got busted i'd just hit the reload button in GTA, those guns cost me a good few tens of thousands and i'll not be losing them!

I hated the first game with a passion (I'm no GTA fanboy, I just hated the mission structure of it and I didn't think the controls were that great either, plus the setting was shit) but I must say this is looking better and better the more I see it. I'm glad it was given an extra few months for polish and the co-op really appeals. With Mercenaries 2 out in 3 - 4 weeks and then this, certainly a lot for sandbox game fans to look forward to.

I love GTA IV's driving model. Some cars handle like arse, but others (and not always the supercars either) are great to throw around. It took a while to acclimatise to and you can't just mash the handbrake like you could previously, but by the end of the game I was throwing tons of metal around like Elwood Blues.

They made cars fun to drive again. Since Vice City, I'd been grabbing bikes at the first opportunity, now I'm happy to tear up the streets in a taxi.

The car handling and physics on GTAIV is incredible.

The way the cars handle on SR is the game's biggest flaw, way too much grip leaving almost no potential for the spectacular despite everything else present.

I am happily disagreeing with you both :)

I noticed someone on my friends list playing a game called "Volition, Inc" tonight. Saints Row 2 maybe?

That's probably the Red Faction:Guerilla beta that's currently taking place, I know a few people playing this on my friends list at the minute (myself also) and it comes up with that.

Oh a side note, I remember initially this thread started as a pisstake ripping into this game since GTA4 was on the horizon where everyone was going on about the 'deep story' and 'realism' of GTA4 etc. How things have changed huh? right? Now it's like 'screw realism we just wanna have fun', right?

I'm not really in the screw realism camp, but I am looking for a game that doesn't feel the need to produce tons of dull linear-scripted missions.

This has appeared on my radar a lot more prominently in the last few months what with 1Up Yours and the like talking about it. If it's halfway between GTA and the more bombastic clones like Just Cause and Crackdown, it could be pretty good. The graphics do look pretty bad, though. Like a first-gen effort, from the looks of it. Er, not that there's anything wrong with that.
