All things Yakuza/Like a Dragon! - new games announced

Yeah Like a Dragon is leaning heavily into the crazy side of the series and it’s better for it- I did worry the change to RPG combat would be too jarring but it’s a welcome change.
Im running around wielding a large “massager” as my weapon that I bought from a sex shop and the crying baby side quest may be the funniest thing I’ve seen in a game in ages.
Best thing is the game still hasn’t revealed all its systems yet so there’s lots of this madness to go :)

It’s a shame more people aren’t talking about Like a Dragon- I’m finding it a really amazing JRPG. It really does have a weird opening like @bradigor says though- it’s the slowest opening of any JRPG I’ve ever known, in a genre known for their slow openings, even slower than any of the Persona games. It’s not really until you get to chapter 4, which could be about 8 or so hours, where things start to open up a little and you really have much of a chance to wander around with actually some of the game’s systems working.

I’m in chapter 5 now and it’s still slowly adding new systems, although I still don’t have the ability to change jobs yet- I kind of love it for that though.

There’s a lot of depth here from equipment, mini games, bonding levels with your party members, item crafting, stats not just for fighting but for the main character’s personality traits....I think anyone liking more traditional JRPGs is in for a real treat.  For their first game in this genre, they’ve definitely done it justice so far, and it still seems to have the characters and heart the series is recognised too. Also, the way that they explain why the game is like an RPG too is a nice little touch.

Just don’t go in expecting the game to open up quickly.

I bought it day one but I have a cornucopia of titles to choose from on both next gen consoles and I want to give LaD my full attention. So I'm saving it for later.

I’d definitely say that’s a good idea- of all the games I’ve played recently, it’s probably the one that would be best with that approach, and I’m finding it quite all-consuming at the moment.

You’re in for a treat when you start it though :)

I'm still playing but juggling a couple of other games at the moment as well. I'm at chapter 6 but I'm facing dudes several levels higher than me so I’m checking out Part-Time Hero requests and different job classes instead. I'm still enjoying it even during these downtime moments though. :)

I ain’t played Yak LAD but I’d say it’d be a good move starting there. 0 is a better place to start if you fancied playing the entirety of the original Yak saga, i.e. 7 x 40+ hour epics. I’ve been playing through them for the past 4 years and still have two more and a spin-off to go

Starting with Yak LAD doesn’t come with all the other baggage. I won’t be be getting round to playing it til 2024 at the earliest simply because I’m so invested in the original saga and they’re definitely games that you don’t want to rush. All of my favourite content is in the mini games and side stories so they usually each take me a very long time.

Yeah, superficial things like Watch Dogs, AC, the new Destiny 2 content, Mikey Morals, DeS etcetera etcetera - to me that's all perfect fodder to dip into for a bit to simply see what my lovely new hardware has to offer. I watched the intro to LAD and did exactly 1 battle and quit. As a longtime Yakuza fan ever since the first one on PS2, I want to give LAD my undivided full attention. Settle in for another crazy trip to Japan.

@womblingfree Maybe the thread title needs changed? Consensus seems to be there’s no need to start with 0 if newcomers are simply wanting to get stuck into LAD.

We already put that in the actual LAD thread title - perfect jumping on point - but you're right it should be in this one too.

Zero is the perfect starting point for the Kiryu saga. But those who want to start completely fresh and let the Yaki series take them for a ride on the current generation, start with LAD.

Word for those on PC: the Steam version is sort of scuffed, in that my control scheme was completely FUBAR when using a 360 compatible controller (No d-pad/right stick, triggers panned the camera and start was mapped to right stick click).

Yeah I found this as well. My solution was to enable Xbox config in the settings, and then launch via big picture mode. Pain in the butt though. I've been streaming it via Steamlink and it works brilliantly, despite claiming not to be optimised.

I've not played PC games in years. I wanted to stream some, but whenever I change window focus all the sound mutes. It feels like this shouldn't be expected behaviour. Am I mistaken?

Played the first 3 hours of this last night. Such a weirdly paced opening. I really like the story telling but 3 hours so far with very little to interact with or get stuck into.

Also, it’s funny but the ‘totally crazy’ funny stuff hasn’t really started yet?

Spoiler

I’m out of prison and have just visited the soap town place with the cop. Only funny bits so far are the porn peddler, the town mascot and some of the expressions / language

I feel like it should be slowly starting to offer more hi-jinks, battle system content and interactions pretty soon?

(Again, to be clear im really liking it it would just be nice to know I’m gonna have stuff to do if I do a few more hours tonight!)

Oh don't worry - once it takes the training wheels off after the opening area there's lots of typical yakuza silliness - it more than makes up for the opening :)

Awesome. And based on the above spoiler can I expect that to happen pretty soon?

Also stupid question but I assume the go to option is the English dub rather than Japanese audio with subs? English seemed pretty well done to me but wasn’t sure.

I'm 15 hours in and it's still unlocking new content and there's entire areas of the map I haven't even looked at yet so I expect you'll have plenty to keep you occupied soon enough :)

I’ve bought LAD. I also have zero on gamepass. I’ve never played one before.

Should I absolutely be playing zero first? Or can I safely go for the newer shinier game first?

Yakuza 0 is outstanding. But if you only want to play one game in the franchise in isolation then LaD is probably a much better proposition. Whilst I love Zero for what it is, I love it even more for its part in the wider Kiryu saga, which is an undertaking and a half.

I’m currently at Chapter 7 and thought I was done exploring the Yokohama Underground but then ran into a beast of an encounter when I was back on floor B1...

Spoiler

A "Giant Cleaning Machine" - a level 40 Seiso Shogun. My guys are between level 24 and 27 so needless to say it absolutely wrecked me. I may have an earlier save where I’m not trapped underground but it would mean losing a bunch of my levelling progress...

EDIT: decided to load a save outside of the Underground for now - I was trying to level up for the next main chapter encounter but it's not that bad by comparison. :P

EDIT 2: got past my sticking point in the main chapter, so yay. Yokohama Underground can wait.

About 6 hours in. It’s opening up more but still not quite enough yet. Still loving it though. It’s very entertaining.

1. Why is the game not in HDR?

2. Why is the Xbox not chucking Auto HDR on it? Does that only apply to non X S enhanced games?

Although, in saying that, when it comes to the great proto-Yakuza Shenmue, it’s dodgy English dub or gtfo :quote:

A game in which a young man wanders the streets at night asking strangers where he can find Charlie - not nearly as funny in Japanese.
