Going from 0 to Kiwami is most natural, and the order you should do it.

But it's also going from the best game in the series to the worst. Or at least, Yakuza 0 was made as a celebration of a long series by developers going balls-out, whereas Kiwami is a remake of the smallest and simplest first game. Only one playable character, only one city, no major managment minigame, and the comedy just isn't there in the substories yet. They added a bunch of comedy with Majima Everywhere, but that becomes a huge pain after a while.

And yes, that first boss is notorious. You can only do chip damage to his many health bars, and then he regenerates his health, and you might not have bought the "kiwami" move that stops it. Thankfully the other bosses are fine... except the end-game boss. I had just as much trouble with the very end-game boss, for the same reason as the first boss. Combined with everything else that was "lesser" about Yakuza Kiwami, I finished it feeling a bit sour.

I think the main story is pretty good though.

Which bosses you find difficult largely depends on your fighting style. I found the

two fat guys in the discotheque incredibly frustrating

- the other bosses were all fine.

"Customer is King" :D

Zero, what a game it is so far, it's got a plot...and it's great!

I'm a couple of hours in and from the quote above those who've played it will get an idea where I am. Combat is improving, opening up...I'm still not massively enjoying the fisticuffs other than the Heat moves, sticking with Brawler. The main frustration is that it sometimes feel you can't break subsequent attacks like you're stun locked, which can feel annoying in a pile on.

Can someone tells me when Yakuza 5 gets good again?

Second act spoilers.

after the incredible first act with Kiryu I'm now stuck with the god awful Saejima stuff. I made it through the prison and hunting section which was abysmal and now I'm playing a guy at pool to get in a casino. Is this the worst Yakuza game?

Slow down a bit and take in the atmosphere, is my recommendation for Yakuza 5. Running everywhere just draws unwanted attention to yourself. ;)

I'm on the final act now (and taking a bit of a break before I complete it), but I haven't even unlocked the fight 100 dudes on the street trophy yet.

I ended up really enjoying Saejima's jolly in Hokkaido. It's definitely a Yakuza with a lot of fluff though.

Personally I loved every minute. But the next chapter is a big change of pace.

If people haven't seen, a bunch of Yakuza games (notably including Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise) are being added to the Playstation Hits lineup, providing easy and cheap access to them physically and digitally. It's especially good for FotNS as that has held its price surprisingly well (I'm guessing it was a smaller print plus the license) and I've seen physical pre-orders for 13 quid.

Still soldiering on with Yakuza 5 Saejima stuff. There seems to be a lot of "find this place or person, we're not going to tell you exactly where it is, just go looking" which I'm not a fan of.

I knocked a bear unconcius though so swings and roundabouts

I have been addicted to Yakuza Zero the past few weeks (my first Yakuza game). Just finished chapter 14 and it's incredible.

It's taken a while because I've taken detours to do most of the substories, I've completed my real estate empire and I have done all the cabaret club stuff, and it's been so much fun.

I think I'll take a break once I've finished this, before diving into Kiwami, as I'm at over 80 hours played already!

UPDATE!

I finally got through that characters bit and then went onto the next...

The Haruka stuff is amazing, but then I'm a sucker for dance minigames. Much like the real estate or cabaret's, this is the sort of thing they could flesh out into their own games. I came to the end of this part last night and am about to start with Akiyama (the only new character from 4 I liked).

You’re doing everything right. Sounds exactly like the summer I spent playing 0, which was also my first Yak. As much as I love the rest of the series, you just can’t get back that first play through, constantly wondering omgwtflol. Playing the rest of the series is like wearing a comfy old pair of slippers, since you come to recognise and expect the formula, so it’s great to hear you’ve really savoured your first with 0.

Sounds similar to my first play through a couple of years ago as well. Now I've nearly completed Kiwami 2 and looking forward to the next one, though I am enjoying taking my time.

I couldn't stop playing 0 and I couldn't stop talking about it to people either. Friends, family, colleagues, etc. I just couldn't keep my mouth shut about all the bizarre sub stories, mini games and fascinating characters. None of them even like gaming and I still get asked occasionally whether I still play that crazy Japanese gangster game series and has anything else completely insane happened.

And the answer is always yes!

Having a stint of about a year between games is ideal, as they often have a linear passage of time between games reflective of their release dates (0 notwithstanding), so there is this feeling of returning to a home from home, seeing what's changed in the interim.

After a not so brief detour with Last of Us Part 2 I'm back with Yakuza 5!

Now I'm on the Haruka/Akiyama stuff. I'm liking the mystery and the seedy underbelly of the Japanese idol business. Haruka's side stuff is a little flimsy for the most part, but as a dancing rythm game fan, I do enjoy that part of the gameplay. Even though I wish there was more song choices. Kinda hoping to get back with Kiryu soon....

A new character emerges! More Yakuza 5 stuff:

I didn't expect my next character to be a porn writing ex baseball boy, but here I am. I like his story so far, and the baseball side stuff is a hell of a lot more interesting than Saejimas hunting nonsense. Not a fan of his fight style. I prefer the quickness of Akiyama to his slow, pondering attacks. Though his weapon abilities are better.

These are the substories I remember most fondly and would certainly recommend checking out:

Miracle on Tenkaichi Street

Damned Yanki

How to Train Your Dominatrix

Disciple of the New Order

The Shrink Wrapped Dream

Stadium Jumper Strut

Arakure Quest

Passport to Pizza

Activities wise, I personally love the disco dancing, karaoke and bowling mini games (the attached bowling substory has an incredible payoff too).

Eventually in the story you open up two sub games, Real Estate Royale and Cabaret Club Czar which are both digital crack. You need to batter through some of them at least partially to further the main game, but I got so into both of them I 100%’d the pair of them. This despite not being really enthused by either on initial impressions.

I get mixed up about which activities are in which Yak. Was the women's wrestling game in '0'? Or the telephone chatline subgame? Both are a tad embarrassing to play. Ditto the bug battling and photogravure idol games in some of the later episodes.

The telephone dating in 0 is hilarious. The overly dramatic way in which Kiryu answers the phone! The opportunity to accidentally call someone gassy when you meant to say they were classy! Outright asking your date if they are actually a man! Comedy gold.

The pervy photograph game in Kiwami 2 is a series low point, though, and not many people would defend 0’s cat fights.

And Yakuza 5 finished. So my ranking of the PS4 Team Yakuza games is as follows:

Yakuza 0

Yakuza Kiwami

Judgment

Yakuza 6

Yakuza Kiwami 2

Yakuza 3

Yakuza 5

Yakuza 4

Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise

In the end I'd rate 5 just above 4. Even though it does suffer the same issue 4 had, in that there are too many characters so unless you're battering the game over a week it's difficult to keep track with where people are in the story and what's going on. I wonder if that's why they decided to reel it all back in for 6 and only let you play as Kiryu?

I'm now ready for Yakuza 7. And after that I really hope a Judgment sequel is on the horizon.
