I’m loving all these Sega ports to PC.  Yakuza 0 and Yakuza Kiwami are up on Steam with Yakuza 0 available for pre-order.   Never played any,  are these considered the best ones.  Maybe others in series will follow.

Zero is the best one and also the best one to start with since takes place before all the others. Zero being a prequel and all that. It's the perfect introduction to the series.

I just fired up Steam to be greeted with a cheery, "Hey, why not pre-order Yakuza Zero?"  I punched the air.  I knew nothing about it.

Where did this even come from? Only £15 full price as well, (currently 10% off for pre-order).  Kiwami is on the store too. One of the tag lines on the store is something like "now in 4K and unlimited frame rate" which is good but, my sweet Lord, Yak on PC...

They are remastering 3, 4 and 5 too aren't they?  They kind of have to come to PC too don't they?

Man, what a day.

This plays in my head every time there’s more good Yakuza news (which is quite often nowadays).

Also I’ve just realised I need to turn it into a ringtone so every time I get a call I can forget I’m stuck in the office and pretend that Majima and his mate are having a profitable night instead.

Anyone on the fence / jaded about modern gaming absolutely needs to Yakuza Zero a try. It's the best game I played last year and certainly the one that left the biggest lasting impression. The first hour is a bit slow but once you've gotten to the end of the first chapter I guarantee you'll be wanting to see it through to the end.

Also it's the funniest game ever made, when it's trying and unintentionally !

The thing I love about the Yakuza games is if you like story there's a fantastic crime story in there with drama, emotion, great stories etc but a fuckload of gameplay as well.  Never skimps on the gameplay or story, it's bloody marvellous.

6 wasn't as good as 0 or kiwami IMHO but there was one bit of true amaze:

Ono-michio!

I couldn't be bothered to Photoshop an orange on my head, or a ramen bowl, the outfit, the wellies or the fish bag but the pose tickled me every time.

This. I'm convinced if anyone wobbles into the thread and is all like 'oh, it was okay, but I don't see what the fuss was about' there's an actual piece of their soul missing, or they're not human or some shit. It should really have been the Voight-Kampff test in Blade Runner.

Anyone know if those uk psn versions allow you to play entirely in Japanese (menus/text/voices)?

Thinking of getting zero and that is a lot cheaper than I can get it for in Japan, but I want my Japanese practice :)

Voices are all in Japanese. I don't think you can change the text.

That's a shame, 0 is 4000 yen on the japan store.

Kiwami is only 2000 yen, might try that first.

I played (and quite liked) Ishin a few years ago when the ps4 came out first. I have no experience with the main series though.

As an aside, how bad an idea would it be to just go straight to 6? Want those fancy graphics and if I play in order I somehow doubt I'll play 0-5 and then 6 within the space of the next decade or so, if they are each similar in length to Ishin.

@partious Zero is the best in the series and also the best entry point - it's the most accessible and it takes place before all the other games. 6 is the conclusion of the entire saga, wouldn't recommend starting with that one! Kiwami is good but it's also a remake of the first PS2 game - it's noticeable that the team was still finding out what worked and finding their groove. It's with part 2 that the series went from good to brilliant - so Kiwami isn't really a good starting point either.

In short: go with Zero. You could wait until the next Japanese summer sale on PSN, it will probably be discounted since it's discounted now over here (I'm basing this on pure guesswork/gut feeling). But go with Zero, whatever you do.

I feel like I've been broken. I still never really got on with 0, or not to the extent where I regard it as highly as other fans. Too bloated and meandering, with one of the most disappointing overrall narratives (poor pacing being the main blight to me) and unmemorable characters outside of the Big Two. Even then, I felt the prequel nature of it was a wasted opportunity; Kazuma as the Dragon of Dojima turns out is a myth that never existed because he's apparently always been this stand up dude, and while I liked the presentation of Majima initially, it was such a sharp contrast to how he has been presented in the series up until then that I just couldn't get invested in it. I've always though the strength of the series was its continuous nature, and 0 dialled back the clock and made a big misstep of it in my mind. A damn shame as functionally it is one of the best in the series; combat is an absolute dream and though I may find it exhausting, it's a good thing to see such a wide array of optional content. But how it hangs together just never felt right to me. Much like Yakuza 5 it's overly long and it lost me for vast swathes of its playtime (the middle ten chapters dragged on endlessly for me, not aided by my lack of fondness for the new characters it introduced). I don't think I've ever been more disappointed in a game.

So, series preference for me (this is where Imma cement my weirdo take on the series):

4>2>6>3>1>0>5 (the positioning of 2 is up for debate as I haven't played it for years, maybe Kiwami 2 will be the confirmation on its ranking).

I still liked 0. It had flashes of absolute brilliance, and the polish and style of it were near faultless. 6 on the other hand, totally grabbed me, and its memorable characters and narrative pacing (and yeah, I like that it was much shorter) help put it nearer the top. All Yakuza games have great combat and fun diversions, so I really am there for the story and immersion, and that's where 6 totally knocked that out of the park for me.

3 needs more love. I genuinely loved the super slow opening chapters in Okinawa.
