All things Yakuza/Like a Dragon! - new games announced

I really appreciate you posting impressions @I say! As a massive fan of everything Yakuza, but not so much Fist of the Northstar (I saw the anime on VHS back in the nineties and I remember badly drawn brawny men hitting each other with wooden animations but without any real story connecting the various fisticuffs), I'm still very much interested in this game. If it's fun and recommended for Yakuza fans, I'm totally in as something to play between Yakuzas!

I've played a bit more, and this is a game with Yakuza mechanics but Fist of the North Star characters and storylines.  The fighting is fun, but there was a long series of fetch quests to get what I needed to get into the city.

If you aren't into the manga, I'm not sure I can recommend this, especially if you don't understand Japanese.  I don't like manga myself, but I like to have every game in a series, hence buying this.  The violence, which can be set to "mild" for the squeamish, is even more OTT than the Yakuza games.  I've always loved the fighting in the series, and it's nice to beat up Mad Max film style goons instead of hosts, chimpira and crooks in Kamurocho.  But the storyline is of no interest to me.

If anyone does import this and needs help getting into Eden City, drop me a PM - the fetch quests will be tricky to work out by trial and error.

Oh, and you're welcome @Mr. Gerbik

Yakuza 6: Song of Life - arrived on PS4 and debuts at No.3. It is the biggest launch for a Yakuza game yet. It beat the previous best - 2017's Yakuza Kiwami - by 300 units.

In the UK Charts that is. Pretty cool and crazy given the difficulty of trying to sell the sixth (or seventh) in a story led series.

I think Yakuza is here to stay in the West.

Kiwami and Zero are pretty self contained. Same for the rest of the series? I kind of want to go into 6 without spoiling 2-3-4-5 - but if I need to I'll spoil the series so I'm not lost.

Yakuza 0 and Yakuza Kiwami are  essential since they lay the foundations for the rest of the series. You get to know Haruka and Kiryu, the Tojo clan, etc.

Yakuza 2 is quite self contained. I've never played it but looking forward to Kiwami 2.

Yakuza 3 introduces the orphanage in Okinawa, Yakuza 4 and 5 some main (playable) cast members. Both make an appearance in Yakuza 6. But the stories are all quite self contained. It's basically "I thought I was out, but they keep dragging me back in".

I think you can play 6 after Kiwami without much trouble. There are some references you might miss, but they are not really that important.

The game has a memories section in the menu. I skipped reading 2 because i'll be playing it in August. I read the rest and kind of wish I hadn't, hopefully I'll forget them by the time those games get Kiwami'd.

I haven't felt lost in 6 at all for not playing them. I think the main things you need to know are at some point Kiryu opened an orphanage with a really inappropriate name and one of the mates he's made along the way is a loan shark with a heart of gold. Everything else is explained in game.

The orphanage was actually called Sunshine Orphanage all the way up to 5, it was changed for 6.

I think his reasoning is a bit flakey. Would anyone have really cared that the orphanage had the same name as a club with a generic name Kiryu never even visited from a minigame in single game set decades before he would have opened it. Not that I mind, I think it's pretty funny having a home for children basically called The Stiffy Orphanage.

Funny, whenever they finally agreed to localise Yakuza 3 (only after cutting loads of it out) it seemed like the last hurrah for a series that was just too niche to survive in the West. Now I've got a freaking Yakuza backlog!

They didn't cut that much out. Just the hostess minigame and an obscure Japanese history quiz.

It’s named after a flower?

He could have called it the Rusty Trombone Orphanage and technically it would have been named after a musical instrument in state of disrepair, still probably not a good idea though.

Yes, I can see their dilemma, but they over-thought it IMHO. The name is out there in Y3-Y5, it is immutable. The ship has sailed. Changing it in 6 doesn't change what the English name was, any series veteran playing Y0 has already seen 'Sunshine' orphanage.

The fact they inadvertently managed to name it something even ruder only adds some extra icing to the irony cake!

Yeah you can skip ahead to 6 quite safely. I did skim the recaps for the other games but have forgotten them already. There are a few callbacks to 3-5 in some side quests so far but nothing important or that left me confused, more like easter eggs.

There must be a Kiwami 3 at some point I assume that will doubtless restore the cut content.

As for the orphanage, the current localisation team on this series seems to be one of the best in the industry, but they overthunk it there. I couldn't even remember the name of Majima's cabaret club.

Am I missing something here? Surely they should've changed it to Sunflower Orphanage, if they even needed to change the name at all.

I suspect that the inappropriateness of the new name is probably not part of american-english.

Definitely overthinking it. I know Atlus did something similar with Persona 5 were the dialogue was too literally translated and therefore lost all natural flow.

I'm nearly done with 0 (Well, I've just started the finale chapter) and despite playing for over 50 hours it feels as though I've hardly scratched the surface with a completion percentage of 25%

It looks like I've got the chance to finish up things before starting the final bit - Will I be able to go back after it's done or shall I do everything now so I don't miss out on it?

What a game this is though. Without a doubt one of the best I've ever played.

I've got Kiwami and 6 lined up ready to play after I'm done with this with Kiwami 2 already pre-ordered!

Premium adventure unlocks after you've completed the game, which allows you to mop up any sidequests etc

So... I am not very far in at all yet (barely had time). However one thing that stands out to me already is the amazing attention to detail. In an early scene they are drinking at a bar and the liquid in the glass moves around properly and goes down as they drink it. I know it is only a minor thing, but there are little touches like that all over the place already, which really does draw you in.

Also, the early story has an intrigue to it too, so really looking forward to seeing where it goes.
