Does the demo finish by essentially telling you to go to an area that you can’t access?

Story-wise you can only go as far as the waypoint that's outside Little Asia. Not sure what else you can do other than just wander around fighting randoms or doing some side missions. I don't even think there's any mini games available to you unless I've missed them.

Putting out a heavily story-focused demo that has what must be around an hour's worth of cutscenes, possibly more, was a really odd decision. And it's pretty jarring going from 60fps Zero and Kiwami to this which feels like it's struggling to reach 30 most of the time outside cutscenes and the screen tearing is bad (playing on a normal PS4)

Yeah. That's where I am. You can't do all of the subquests either, due to areas being cordoned off (I needed to go to one of the Sega arcades). Slightly odd demo really.

I'm really excited for the full game, but this "demo" was a spectacular mis-step on all levels. The fact it doesn't even end properly, it just blocks progress, is real shitty too. Complete waste of bandwidth that's likely done more harm than good for the series.

Growing up I was completely Sega mad but modern Sega is just mad full stop.

Slow clap for the person that removed the ability to run with the analogue stick meaning you have to now hold X to sprint and position your fingers in a claw shape if you want to move the camera at the same time. Really bizarre decision that.

I am finally playing Yakuza 0. Been an enormous fan of the series since it first came out, and to date have played every game that has been released in the EU (including Kiwami and Dead Souls) and wanted to get 0 in before 6 came out.

I have no other way to say this... I don't really like it. :(

I'm up to Chapter 15 now and for the journey so far I'd rate it below most of the series, and absolutely nowhere near being the best of the bunch. I'm thoroughly disappointed by it, as although it has flourishes of brilliance (combat styles, some of the new characters, specific narrative beats) I just don't think it hangs together particularly well, and it meanders as much if not more than Yakuza 5 did. It's bloated and for the possibly the first time in the series for me, I am noticing the bloat and not enjoying the minute to minute exploration of Kamurocho and Sotenbori. I'll probably do more thorough thoughts once I am finished with it, but with each passing chapter I'm further lowering my overrall score. Right now I'd say I'm sitting on a 4/10. Properly let down.

Yeah, I am planning on a proper swoop through those in either Premium Adventure or a Legend difficulty run (done a good few of Kazuma's before I started getting voerwhelmed by the amount of time it was taking up. Just a shame that the main story is so lacklustre in my eyes compared to other entries. 4 is still the pinnacle of the series for me (though it conversely had arguably the most disappointing final boss fight).

I thought you always had to press x to run? Or did that change in one of the more recent games? There's always been the issue of stamina (or the lack thereof) which limits your ability to run all the time. I just found the awkwardness of pressing x to run far more noticeable in first person mode. First person mode seems pretty cool though.

Couldn’t agree with his points more. I've been banging the drum for smaller more sense game worlds for years. Give me something like Yakuza or Deus Ex with a polished 'small' world that's full to the brim with varied engaging content and memorable characters, where the location has a real sense of character and I eventually know its nooks and crannies like my home town, any day.

Instead the industry is obsessed with maki g bigger and bigger worlds with some paltry recycled 'content' spread over it like butter scraped over too much bread (to nick a metaphor off Tolkien). You just know that Bethesda is going to announce The Elder Scrolls XVIICM: This Time It's A Jungly Environment and boast that the game world is 10,000 times bigger then the surface of Jupiter and everyone will clap like seals.

Not sure how it worked in 2-5 because I've not played them, but in 0 and Kiwami walk and run are both mapped to the analogue stick and you can also sprint with limited stamina by holding X. In 6 (and presumably Kiwami 2 as well since it runs on the same engine) they've done away with the analogue running altogether and you're left with walk or sprint with limited stamina. It's going to make exploring the city a bit of a slog.

It's the old 'meticulously simulated city block' thing Warren Spector used to talk about aspiring to. Hitman does this, more or less, and I think Walking Simulators would be perfect for this.

It's completely feasible to do these days and I wish more companies would try it.

So last year I played my first Yakuza game (zero, obviously) and I just watched the credits roll on Kiwami.

I can’t stress enough how into this I am. The overall tone, the fairly linear, directed action gameplay that doesn’t ask me to wander a huge map looking for trinkets, or make sense of endless loot. I love those things in games, but love this because it’s just the change of pace you need to break the never-ending open worlds up a little.

And the story. That’s what it’s all about for me — it’s not clever, or genre bending, or wildly original. It just puts these characters you care about through some shit and twists and turns enough to keep interest right up to the end.

I guess my next step will be 6, though, which feels really weird. Guess there’ll be a lot of story to make sense of to bridge the gap, but I don’t have anything I can play the interim games on.

6 features a short recap of each game, accessible from the main menu. Apart from that within the game itself the most important protagonists are introduced by Kiryu himself during an optional dream sequence. You'll be fine. But yes, ideally they'll bring out Kiwami 2 asap followed by a remastered collection (as in, just a quick and easy port with a resolution bump) of 3, 4, and 5. I've played them all but would love to have the entire series on PS4.

Nice. Very hyped for it now!

I *need* all of the Yakuza on my PS4. With Kiwami 2 we will have 0, 1, 2, and 6 on PS4. A remaster collection (no need for anything fancy, just a basic hd-ified port will do) of 3, 4, and 5 would be perfect. Imagine playing through them in order, complete Yakuza overdose burnout :D:wub:

In an ideal world they would also consider bringing the two samurai Yakuza spin-offs over to the west after all...

Continued my Kiwami adventure this morning.  Didn’t realise I’d done so much.

On chapter 7 with 42% completion. I ignored the 6 demo cos I want to go into 6 unspoilt. The Yakuza 2 news means that’s a day 1 purchase for me.  Hope we get a nice steelbook again.
