Great Gaming Moments

The first time I was given a speeding ticket in Mafia.

"A speeding ticket? In a computer game? What?!"

But you have loads of money. It doesn't matter. It's just an inconvenience. Because you're (a rich) GANGSTER. But also a responsible driver. Unless in chase/flee situations. No reason to drive like a punk. Show a little respect.

Syndicate (Amiga) - The first assassination mission. Getting the Gauss Gun.

Oblivion (PC) - Entering the world for the first time.

Half Life (PC) - The intro.

Ridge Racer (PS1) - Shiny new console, shiny new game.

Guild Wars (PC) Turning round the corner into that big canyon at Serenity Temple.

Half Life 2 (PC) Dog. Saw Blades. Gravity Gun.

Rainbow 6 (PC) Co-op missions online for the first time.

EverQuest (PC) First MMO I played. Spent my first few hours just in Rangers Glade, fishing with other people.

Gauntlet (C64) A coin-op conversion that was actually just like the coin-op.

The cutscene in the final battle of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. I don't think a game has ever given me goosebumps quite like that.

Remind me of this, I loved the game from start to finish but I don't remember what happened...

The majority of mine come from Ocarina, it was such a step up when it was first released that literally everything blew me away but the first steps into Hyrule Field were just unbelievable. I remember having the day with my brother and we just spent hours marvelling at everything early on, even the sneaky bit in Hyrule Castle grounds got me very excited.

Skies has to have a mention, possibly my favourite set of characters in a game and they made some truly great moments. Vyse shipwrecked on that island was brilliant, and later making that island your home with upgrades and whatnot... wow. Oooh and that part where Vyse misses being reunited with Aika and Fina by literally seconds, broke my heart!

Mario appears to be defeated, but is revived by the cheers of all the characters he's met and helped along the way. ;)

Funnily enough, since my earlier post it's been matched. Phoenix Wright 3 - final case.

The last piece of evidence, the slo-mo finger-point, the silhouette of Mia, and THAT music....oh, man :(

^^^ Impossible Mission on the 64 unless I'm mistaken.

There are so many moments but whenever something like this gets discussed there is always one that springs to mind first:

Standing on the top of the Sphinx thing in Tomb Raider. The camera pulls back and you take in the scale of the level. That was a moment for me that summed up that games had arrived at a point I had dreamt of for years and hinted at where they could take me in the future.

Yep it was Impossible Mission. First time I heard a computer speak. Creepy but incredible.

And that Tomb Raider moment! That truly was astonishing. I remember being gobsmacked by that and playing for about 10 hours straight. There was also a really tall, thin room in TR1 that impressed me. Why is there no game that inspires that amount of enthusiasm anymore? Now I've got Bioshock, and despite thinking it a great game, I can rarely muster up the enthusiasm to actually play it.

in bf1942 on lan with playdoh when he was sinking my aircraft carrier with his submarine, i managed to just take off in a corsair single engine just as the ship( and runway) i was taking off from dissapeared under the water. I was going down as the ship did and just managed to pull up as the water came aboard.

It was sweet.

SOS: The Final Escape. The 20 mins or so. You arrive in this deserted city. The ground rumbles occasionally. You move down the road and one of the tremors becomes an earthquake. Your character stumbles as the skyscraper just ahead of you collapses in your path. The whole thing was scripted, but the emptiness of the location coupled with the fact that this was the point I realised the enemy in this game wasn't monsters or people, but the environment. ;)

Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time

The Death of the deku tree, Saria's goodbye then your first step into Hyrule field, before getting chased by a rabbid giant flying pinapple. Escaping on Epona, the real fear of the zombies, every Sheik scene...there is so much.

Resident Evil 4

First head shot and freaking out when something other than brain splatter appears, getting the unlimited ammo rocket launcher.

Phoenix Wright

When the music goes draumatic when you get on a role in court, and you know you are right.

Pokemon red/blue

When your favorite pokemon first evolves, brilliant!

Banjo kazooie

Turning into a bumble bee! The squiching sound when you land! Squish!

Mario Sunshine

The first time you wash off paint ;)

Majoras Mask

When you fail the wedding mask challenge, and you have to leave that poor boy in the cave as the moon is aboout to crash into the town,

Wind waker

The first time you kill a baddie, the curling smoke is sooo cool/cute!

I think everyone goes through phases of this. Usually when it's happening to me I just fire up a much older console, usually an dRPG and work my way through it. Always seems to boost the ole enthusiasm.

The intro to Final Fantasy 8, with Squall and Seifer having an awesome sword fight, with great music and stunning graphics. That was and still is quite an astonishing way to start a computer game. THAT'S what the Final Fantasy movies should have been like, instead of the Spirits Within/Advent Children nonsense.

Playing the Half Life demo on my awful crappy computer, and being constantly stunned at just how GOOD the game was. Particularly when I saw humans fighting aliens and then both sets of them starting on me. Aggghh!! It was a 52Mb demo and took about 2 or 3 weeks to download as I recall. Worth every second.

Making videos of my car chases on Driver 2. Felt like a proper movie director!

Well, here are my great moments.

Final Fantasy VII

The first time I watched the opening scene really blew me away and the opening theme was excellent. Another part was when you finally get out of Midgar and onto the world map, it felt like this was a sense of freedom this was only the beginning of something great.

Grand Theft Auto III

Just seeing this game play out for the first time. Having the freedom to do whatever, it really amazed me.

This - as well as getting the Airship in FFVII - so much freedom to go to all the hidden quests.

New Super Mario Bros -

The level on World 1 with the bouncy pink platforms :) Finally, the return of a proper Mario game!

Tomb Raider

The T-REX!

Skipping over ones that have already been mentioned...

The last boss in Space Channel 5, where it all goes backwards and acapella.

The storming-the-beach mission near the end of Operation Flashpoint.

System Shock 2's big character reveal.

The first tentative lap of Silverstone I took in Crammond's F1GP.

the first, even more tentative lap of the Nurburgring Nordschliefe in Grand Prix Legends.

Playing the PSX demo of the original Driver.

Crouched low in long grass at the top of a plateau, carefully scanning the landscape through the scope of a sniper rifle, and hearing the sound of birds and running water become distinctly more like heavy breathing. "The End..." he whispers.

He's fucking behind me, isn't he.

I try to spin around to confront him but he stabs me and scurries away, leaving me sprawled on the floor, a little shaken up.

Half an hour later I follow his wet footprints and get the jump on him to smugly repay the favour.
