24 : TwentyFour

13 episodes they're looking at, apparently.

It'll work really well I reckon. Seasons of 24 have always felt like they've been divided into two smaller parts anyway, with the second half typically having the 'proper' bad guy after a reveal about halfway through, or a big twist in the story.

This has made my day. I loved watching an episode of 24, event television which I haven't felt since it ended.

I just would like a story similar to season one, no terrorists, no bombs, no president story. Keep the story grounded in reality, with Jack Bauer being a ruthless bastard once again.

And it's confirmed! Jack will be back in 24: Live Another Day.

Fox has ordered "24: Live Another Day," a thrilling new tent-pole event series set to restart the clock on the groundbreaking and Emmy Award-winning drama franchise starring Kiefer Sutherland. Produced by 20th Century Fox Television, Imagine Television and Howard Gordon's Teakwood Lane Productions, "24: Live Another Day" will make its historic debut in the summer of 2014 on Fox.

The announcement was made this morning by Kevin Reilly, Chairman, Fox Broadcasting Company; Dana Walden and Gary Newman, Chairmen, Twentieth Century Fox Television; and Brian Grazer, Chairman, Imagine Entertainment.

The high-octane saga will reunite showrunner Howard Gordon with Sutherland and retain the real-time, pulse-pounding, fast-paced format with split screens and complex interweaving storylines, with 12 episodes representing 24 hours. The suspenseful event series once again follows the exploits of heroic agent Jack Bauer (Sutherland), who will resume his story several years following the events of the final season.

No mention of mountain lions, unfortunately.

I'm happy to see 24 return and depending quite how they achievement condensing 24 hours into 12 hours is probably for the best as it'll widen the story options and hopefully get rid of a lot of the chaff. Still, I'd prefer to see the whole real time aspect dropped and just have a heavily serialised mini series featuring Jack Bauer.

TV Line seem to think the new series will still be in real time, we'll just skip over some hours entirely. Seems plausible as a way to maintain the hook of real time but allow for more creative choices to be made. Be interesting to see how it turns out.

I rather enjoyed 24 at the time, although I drifted away from the show somewhere around S6, and in hindsight I don't think it ever quite attained the highs of the incredibly tightly written first half-season. Still, "I shot above the knee, she'll still be able to walk!" and "I'm gonna need a hacksaw!" remain TV moments to equal Lost S2E01, no matter how muddled each show became towards the end, just like this post do you see?

"When Howard came to us saying he had an idea for a new chapter of '24,' he quite simply had us at 'hello,'" remarked 20th Century Fox Television Chairmen Gary Newman and Dana Walden.

Well that gives us great confidence!!

Joking aside, I'm looking forward to more 24. Kiefer only seems truly alive these days when he's threatening co-workers, killing foreigners with his bare hands or attacking Christmas trees so it'll be nice to see him with some life behind his eyes again.

I am curious how they bring Jack back into CTU seeing how they painted themselves into a very tight corner in Season 8.

Also, I remember once scoffing at the proposed 24/Die Hard crossover movie, sneering that 24 wasn't fit to lick DH's boots. The studio decided to make 'A Good Day To Die Hard' instead.

I'd be very happy, bar Jack, with a clean slate. Hopefully we might be able to have something slightly different from CTU stopping terrorist plot.

I want more of Chloe's ex-husband Morris. He was awesome.

Almeida turned up on an episode of Castle the other day, basically playing the same guy sans soul patch. So he's clearly still got it.

Some plot leaks from the script

Casey "Dad, the terrorist is on facebook!"

Jack "Facebook? what?! What is Facebook?"

Casey "Haha Dad get with the times! I'm going to read reddit and twitter to find out where the terrorists are!"

Jack "Let's just do it the old fashioned way and run into some warehouses?"

Casey "The sound of your WALKING STICK will alarm the baddies hah. Because you are old now"

Jack turns around to slap his son

Jack "Oooh my back! I'm getting old now."

Casey "Haha you're old."

Jack "but wise. Together we make a great partnership"

Casey "Yes"

Tony "It's me , Tony"

Casey "Where are we? A old people's home?! Haha"

Two hour episodes? Or more likely an hours worth of adverts per hour of programme.

I read it the opposite way in that the episodes will still be real time but there will be hours that we don't see. So we may see 1200-1500 and then skip to 1700. As long as the plot supports the jumps (ie Jack on a place going somewhere) it will work well. 24 always found it hard to do anything involving a journey since sitting on a place is not inherently interesting, hence the need for lots of side plots of keep the action going during these unavoidable moments where Jack is doing nothing.

Isn't it more likely that there will be say, 6 hours real time in LA then Bauer has to travel to Europe for some reason (12 hour flight?) then 6 hours real time in Europe? Thus 12 episodes of real time and cutting out the flight part (Jack gets to take a nap for once!)

Edit: What he said Δ

The real time aspect was often broken anyway, especially with episode ends. There was that episode where Jack gets infected with a virus from a truck right at the end, with the clock ticking down to 07:00 or whatever. Next episode, seconds later, has an entire CTU team there in hazmat suits, treating Jack, and sorting out the truck. Pretty quick response time.

A full clean up team follows Jack because he never gets the chance to go to the toilet. See everytime he's on his mobile, face screwed up, shouting at someone and then he ends it with a DAMMIT?

Dudes just shitting himself. See the manbag? Nothing in it but spare clips and adult diapers.

  • 2 months later...

So, strangely, I have never watched 24. Would you say it's worth watching it knowing that I have a ton of other series and movies still to watch and it's going to take quite long to watch it all? Basically I'm asking, is it (still) really special?
