The Escapist: Zero Punctuation

That bit at the end about it being impossible for motion control to be immersive without physical feedback is nonsense, isn't it?

I think it's totally valid, and in my opinion true.

Not watched the vid yet but I think 1:1 motion control is a bad idea because of the detachment from what you're seeing. I feel I'd find getting my physical movements in sync with the screen annoying.

I'm not really sure what you mean about getting in sync with the screen.

My movements mapping on to something 2 metres in front of me that isn't me but is reflecting what I'm doing. The idea of controlling something moving in three dimensions using a three dimensional controller while watching a two dimensional representation of it. Scale of my movement compared to in-game scale. I'd probably get used to it but it puzzles me as a concept.

Didn't really play it much did he. Just got his one line joke for each game and bolted. Did he even play the table tennis?

"Dogfighting. That doesn't belong on a sports resort" - yeah, but is it any good? No mention of the other flying modes, eh?

I kind of agree that motion control is a dead-end, and not something I'm really in favour of because it means getting off my arse to enjoy a game, but because this is entertainment and not a review he's went in with an agenda already in mind and just played it enough to have enough material to use.

Still, no point getting worked up about it. It's just Zero Punctuation. No doubt next week he'll be back on a game with a crap plot, like all games, so he has enough bad things to comment upon so he doesn't have to worry if it's good or not.

This was sort of the impression I got.

One "amusing" complaint per game, except for the two he couldn't complain about. Then saying "it's mostly functional" at the end to counterbalance himself. Not exactly great journalism is it.

(Disclaimer, I've not played WSR.)

.::: Yes, because he's obviously a journalist.

He's made it pretty clear he's against the Wii & I doubt anything will change his mind.

Even if Valve announced tomorrow that they were bringing Portal to WiiWare he'd say it doesn't belong on that system & will have to be compromised.

He'd probably be right too.

I watch ZPs for entertainment - and that one was entertaining.

See - if Edge reviewed WSR like that and gave it 6/10 - I wouldn't be complaining. Made me do a couple of proper :o

He does like Frisbee and Archery though.

OMG he doesn't want Natal either.

Who does? It amuses me though to watch Microsoft and Sony's reaction to Nintendo's success with motion control: "Oh it's gay and for kids not REAL0r Gam0RZ, and, um, here's OUR motion sensing devices! They are EXTREAM!!! To the MAX"

He fits the basic definition of a journalist. He's just not a serious one. Or a balanced one. (Or a good one.)

 @ people moaning about un-fair bias and journalism. I suppose you want AVGN to give balanced reviews too?

I just get really tired of the negativity, that's all. It rings hollow. I like the style and the cartoons but I wish he could do that while giving a decent appraisal of the game. It's easy to be funny by ranting and complaining, but when he doesn't temper that with occasional genuine enthusiasm and passion it just gets tedious.

I don't think his reviews would be as funny if they weren't negative... let's face it - the stuff he says about WSR is funny. To be honest, for all we know, he might actually whip it out and play it with pals every now and again - it doesn't matter. It's just for entertainment after all.

He's more right about WiiSports Resort than most "balanced" journalists out there, I bet. Yes, he can forget about possible positive stuff for comedic effect. But others forget about possible negative stuff because it doesn't fit the previews and press releases (the hype).

He's no more balanced than most other gaming journalists. But also not less either.
