Advance Wars: Days Of Ruin/Dark Conflict

The first game was perfect, the rest is just trying too hard to reinvent or add to perfection and suffers from it.

Absolutely

While AW2 on the GBA wasn't that big a change, the DS version introduced unnecessary elements that just diluted the pure strategic gameplay it's known for. I would rather they spent more effort creating specific sprites for the different teams/COs than shoving in new elements.

I guess that's the problem with a game like this; the original gameplay on the GBA was perfect, anything different or new in that area would screw things up.

didn't really get on with Advance Wars DS.

Let's have it back to basics with better controls. AW is made for the stylus, but it controlled better with the pad on the DS.

I disagree; Dual Strike worked brilliantly with the stylus. Except when you're trying to play it on a moving on train.

In fact Dual Strke is my favourite version - they broke nothing that worked well before and added loads more. They even built in options to play it AW/AW2 stylee in the skirmish modes and such, if you so wished.

I liked dual strike and didn't find it too difficult. Some of the levels were tricky but they didn't put me off.

I think what needs to be done is to offer different play modes and different difficulty levels for the main campaign. I even like the pipes as you had to accomodate them into you rstrategy.

I think they should make it hex based and include bonuses for surrounding the unit you attack attacking from behind etc.

COs represented as units on the battlefield, like Kings on a chessboard.

Campaign mode needs reworking. It probably saw less than 20% of my play time on AW DS, and that was purely as a means to unlock everything. I want more progression and continuity through the missions, unlike the previous games where each mission was self contained, and however well or poorly you completed it had no bearing on the following mission.

Don't be absurd.

Good one.

It was an unbalanced, poorly-tested mess. The tag team thing completely fucked the game. Advance Wars is tactical and very clever, the dual strikes aren't. The whole game is just a race to power up your dual strike instead of a tactical battle based on superior positioning and force deployment.

The new character set were mostly unbalanced, too - many were utterly useless while others were grossly overpowered.

In Dual Strike, the right tag teams are literally invincible. Team up the right pair, and you can repair two thirds of all the damage you've taken, deal out four points of damage to your opponents, and take two attacks at them with 200% damage. If you're playing with a levelled team, it's even worse. With the right teams, you can pretty much end the game in one dual strike.

That's fucking BULLSHIT.

Turn tag teaming and levelled characters off, and it was good fun, just like it's always been.

Online's not going to work for a turn based game though.

Play-by-mail would be AMAZING, though.

Complete hyperbolic nonsense. It's amusing how you can be so right, and then so embarassingly wrong.

But continue though. I need something to laugh at.

I agree with Dual Strike being broken. My main issue with Dual Strike was the gross lack of balance between CO powers. The best matches are between 2 more or less equally skilled opponents and won by strategic decisions and good judgements. Not by having bullish CO powers that can turn around the course of a battle in a single turn.
