Wolverine & The Wolverine Thread

Firstly, isn't there just one continuity? Origins is a prequel to the three wolverine films he's in right?

Also, that story us lifted from a classic wolverine comic which was fucking awesome, so this could be awesome.

Apologies, it's only 3 continuities. I forgot that Origins was in canon with the 3 X-Men films. What I gathered from the above article is that this is that The Wolverine won't be a sequel to Origins and thus won't be in that continuity. Add that to First Class, also with Jackman as Wolverine afaik, that's 3 (as it's not supposed to be a prequel to the current X-Men films).

I said that it was starting to seem like Marvel's general approach (although obviously it's not a Marvel-run film franchise at the moment) of rebooting, rebooting some more, getting some parallel continuities going etc.

Everybody good?

I think it sounds decent on paper, I grew up reading Wolverine reprints and the stories with Wolverine flying solo in Japan, going up against ninjas and yakuza and all that still have a sort of 'childhood resonance' for me. But it seems as if Hugh Jackman has been playing Wolverine for about 40 years now, they should get somebody new in. I'm thinking Bob Hoskins.

I don't think he is in First Class actually, that is shooting at the moment.

Frankly I'd much prefer a 4th X-Men film but given that they killed most of them in the third one....

I'm reading that news release as saying it'll be a one-off ie; self contained story not part of a trilogy or story arc, set in Japan. Which would make it a direct follow on from the final post credit scene in Origins.

And this could still the same Wolverine seen in X1 to X3.

In my eyes the way they seem to be working storylines in that Xavier set up the first X-Men team in the early 60's with none of the original team we know from X1 as they would have been too young, Wolverine Origins takes place in the early 80's (coinciding with the real life Three-mile Island incident but I don't remember specifically if there was anything else that would date the film later than the early 80's and they retconned the "Emma Frost" to just call her "Kayla's Sister" in the bluray credits), this could be taking place during the mid to late 80's which keeps it in canon and would match the Frank Miller storyline this is effectively ripped from, with X1 to X3 taking place in the late 90's to early 00's keeping everything in 1 canon.

Obviously I know I'm probably giving too much credit to the people behind this but it's how I like to think it's happening.

One thing that would be difficult to work out is how Xavier goes from being youthful looking McAvoy to scary plastic face Stewart in Origins between the 60's and 80's but hey, it can't be perfect.

It's still one continuity, just one as all over the place as the comic books. Nothing has happened in any of these movies yet that suggest there is a separate continuity to what has happened in any of the X-Men films.

If we ever want to get a good Wolverine film, this seems the best chance at it. I've got my fingers crossed and I'm more hopeful over this than First Class.

I think he wore red and yellow rather than blue and yellow in the original Japan stories, but the 'mask' costume has never been used for the films has it?

EDIT: More like brown n' yelow, thinking back. Reddy brown. Reddy brown n' yellow.

Didn't expect this to be honest but in a way am very glad.

From Comingsoon

Darren Aronofsky and Twentieth Century Fox today issued the following statements about the director's involvement in the movie, The Wolverine.

Stated Aronofsky: "As I talked more about the film with my collaborators at Fox, it became clear that the production of 'The Wolverine' would keep me out of the country for almost a year. I was not comfortable being away from my family for that length of time. I am sad that I won't be able to see the project through, as it is a terrific script and I was very much looking forward to working with my friend, Hugh Jackman, again."

Stated Twentieth Century Fox: "While we are of course disappointed that Darren can't do 'The Wolverine,' we also understand and respect his reasons. Having done both 'The Wrestler' and 'Black Swan' with Darren, we know he is an extraordinary talent and we look forward to working with him on other projects in the future. Hugh Jackman and Fox both remain fully committed to making 'The Wolverine.' We will regroup and move forward aggressively."

I was thinking that I'd just prefer to see him do something original as opposed to a comic book sequel. I'd have loved to have seen his take on it, providing the studio kept out of things, but I wanted to see him do something original more.

It won't happen but David Michôd could be an interesting choice. Or David Cronenberg.

I've not seen anything of Michôd's yet but Cronenberg would be very interesting.

Whoever they go for now, it needs to be along those lines rather than a more obvious choice. The Wolverine was a chance for FOX to shake the comic book genre up a bit.

What's Verhoeven up to these days?

He'd certainly mix it up. Not sure what he's up to, I know at one point he was doing The Thomas Crown sequel but that appears to have stalled. Then there was the long-in-the-works Jesus picture.

John McTiernan?

Edit: Looks like Verhoeven is working on 'Hidden Force' for 2013.

Ugh, McTiernan hasn't directed anything decent for decades. Plus he's currently on bail awaiting an appeal against a one year prison charge, so not very likely.

My short list of people who might conceivably do it and would probably do an awesome job would be:

Duncan Jones

Danny Boyle

Paul Greengrass

My short list of people who would probably be desperate to do it and would probably do a fine job would be:

Edgar Wright

Rob Zombie

Pierre Morel

Wild card:

Joe Cornish?

My fantasy shortlist would be:

Walter Hill (in his mid 70's era)

Mario Bava (60's Era)

Sam Peckinpah (60's Era)

Koen Mortier

Quentin Tarantino

Alphonso Cuaron

People who shouldn't be allowed anywhere near it:

Eli Roth

Michael Bay

Eli Roth

McG

Eli Roth

Brett Ratner

Robert Rodriguez

Uwe Boll

or Eli Roth

Who they will probably get:

Tony Fucking Scott.

Surely any decent director is always going to be hamstrung by the studio's need for Wolverine to be a bankable blockbuster franchise? As nice as it would be for them to take a Batman Begins risk and just let the director get on with it, in the current climate I think you're going to be lucky to get a Spider-Man 3.

It was just announced that Darren Aronofsky won't be directing the sequel to "X-Men: Origin Wolverine" due to difficulties with traveling overseas and family issues. CinemaBlend has learned that quitting "Wolverine 2" had nothing to do with that. Instead, it was all about control over the movie.

Aronofsky has been interested in making a comic book film for years. After 20th Century Fox gave him his chance, the helmer attached himself to the project, but refused to sign the contract until the studio was ready to hand over all production control to him.

Unfortunately, Fox is known for getting involved. In fact, the studio was in constant arguments with director Gavin Hood over the direction of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." In the end, the movie turned out poorly and many believe Fox is to blame.

Knowing this, Aronofsky wasn't ready to have Fox ruin his "Wolverine" movie as well. So when "Black Swan" earned a Best Picture Oscar nomination, he used that to show the studio that he can be trusted with "Wolverine." Fox responded by offering him more money, instead of control. When Aronofsky refused, the studio told him to find another movie to work on.

They obviously saw the script, they liked it, they greenlit the film based on it, so why then feel like they need to control the director's vision? And this isn't a wet behind the ear music video director or a producer testing the water, this is Darren Aronofsky. It makes no sense.
