Goldeneye? :(

Well, that was kind of middle ground. You weren't exactly walking in the footsteps of the film - it was more like "Remember that scene on the dam? Now shoot everyone on the dam. Remember that scene in the snow where there wasn't even any Bond shooting? Whatever, shoot everyone there anyway"

This is trying to do a blow-by-blow recreation of the film.

Fuck, I've just remembered Lego Star Wars. Argument negated. OK, ignore me :D

It reminds me of the on foot recreation of the death star escape in 'rebel strike', but kind of hybridized with an otherworldly version of 'enter the matrix' where they got it OK technically but took all the enjoyment out of the combat.

I *was* impressed when they decided to chuck in a QTE to enhance the drama of bourne driving into a tunnel though, no way on earth that you could depict that kind of adventure in realtime.

I thought this was pretty good for what it is - I can easily see myself giving it a playthrough when it's quiet on the games front.

Wonder what the achievements will be like though given the linearity ? Time attacking levels or something.

Quite a few secret ones, so far.

I agree though, I'm really interested in playing through it during the months of drought.

It'll be a very brain dead game in the month of June- which is great. I normally have 2 or 3 games on the go in a month.

June/July for me:

Metal Gear for cut scene watching and thinky thinky stealth.

Ninja Gaiden 2 for perfecting of the nijopwning art.

And Bourne for going "bang, boosh, wooo".

I don't really mind that Bourne looks nothing like Matt Damon and the german girl looks nothing like Franka Whatshername. I can understand why there were issues with that. But to put the wrong kind of Mini in the Paris chase scene? Why?

Because it was made by Americans and they clearly can't tell the difference / were too lazy to research and actually put any level of authenticity into it.

The embassy escape bit is excellent - I love the way you have to keep moving at all times, it's a bit like a driving game. The shooting is pretty poor, thanks to the ludicrously slow-moving crosshair, and the driving game is Xbox 1 quality. The driving bits really let the side down to be honest, they're dreadful - after playing GTA4, this seems absolutely decrepit.

Still, the QTE running-away bits seem ace. Might buy this second-hand.

They're fine if a little harsh. I think if people obsess over what essentially are 3 second sequences, which if you fail you'll always get second time, then they're lining themselves up for not enjoying the overall pace of the game.

It's better than in say Uncharted where theres a random QTE every 2 hours or so making you completely unprepared for them. A game should use them regularly and thus expecting them in the gameplay, or not at all.

How do you do the kicks though? According to the on screen message, you have to hold down one of the attack buttons, but I rarely get it to work.

You have to back up a little or you won't have time or space to do it. The kick has good reach so its a nice way to move back in, kick and then punch away.

Actually, I saw this explained in an interview. They wanted to use the exact same Mini as the film, but they had to go to Mini for permission. Mini said they don't want an old model, beat up Mini in the game, but gave permission to use the new model. So that's why.

I was wondering about this. They used the image of a beat up old Mini in the film. Presumably Universal didn't have to ask Mini's permission to use that.

I don't understand why they need permission to use the image of a beat up old Mini in a game? Surely they can just model a beat up old Mini and leave off the British Leyland badge?

In the film they used a beat up old Mini, not an image, I don't really think you have to ask permission for that.

Well that's what they said in the interview, that they asked and were refused and presented with the other car. Actually I'd imagine Universal did have to ask Mini's permission to use the beat up Mini in the movie. Universal would not get unlimited use of the Mini just because of the agreement for the car to be in the Bourne Identity, so it wouldn't carry over to this game necessarily.

Anyway, on the games copyright screen while it loads, they mention the Ludlum estate, but not Universal pictures. Vivendi (who owns Sierra) no longer owns Universal pictures, having sold it on a few years ago. So it seems the developers have the rights to the books, not to the movies or anything in them.

They certainly need permission in the game though. They don't own Mini and don't have the right to use their name or the design of their car. What they could have done is design their own car that looks somewhat like an old Mini but considerably different enough to be legal. However, it's likely they thought if they have to design their own similar but slightly different fake Mini they may as well use the new similar but slightly different real Mini design and maybe make some promotion money out of it at the same time.

Finally got round to checking this. Very, very pleasantly surprised and I thought it was brilliant. The driving section was obviously balls but I've a feeling it'll make for less than 20% of the thing.

The QTEs are almost all good. The audio cue makes them much easier to spot than games that have less, and it usually feels like your fault if you miss one, which is crucial. I missed a few but always felt annoyed at myself rather than the game.

The fighting is brilliant, really captures the brutal fist fights of the films with the relentless speed and those sound effects. I found it hard on the middle setting but still enjoyed it immensely. Finally getting the bar up to takedown and then watching the environment-sensitive result is great every time. SMASH!

I actually had a few of those audible "heh" moments at certain points. The game is all all scripted of course, but crucially it doesn't stop you feeling like you're in control, which is a wonderful acheivement. It's the closest I've come to feeling like I'm in a film.

The loading times were a little horrid, the driving toss, and the enemies take a few too many shots to go down but it didn't matter. Not in the demo, at least. The full game could indeed get very tired, we'll have to wait and see.

All that said, I can guarantee that many will hate it.

Well, I got around to finishing the demo. Let's face it, it's pretty shit isn't it? I mean, the shooting is attrocious and the fighting is just button bashing. The driving is apalling. Yet, somehow, it manages to be pretty fun and I can't wait to play through the demo again. One for a weekend rental I think.

I've just got around to trying this demo and it's certainly a mixed bag.

I couldn't shake the feeling that while watching someone who knew exactly what was coming next play the first two missions would be rather cool, actually playing them yourself is more of a grind to get to the aforementioned stage. I never really felt as though I'd clinched a last-minute escape from the authorities on my own breakneck terms, rather that I'd finally figured out which button to press at a given juncture.

I suppose the sort of kinetic, improvisational escapes of the films are quite difficult to portray in an linear fashion and I'm fresh out of ideas as to how it could have been done better. Except for the driving segment, of course.
