Personally I can't wait for the game.

Will it have flaws? Course it will, everyone of them had flaws but it'll still be my most played game when I get my mitts on it. I just love it, I still play the 360 PE6 version several times a week even though he drives me up the wall sometimes.

Anyone know if and when a demo is being released?

That's because there is no competition. Pro Evo not only has flaws, it is broken in some of the most fundamental gameplay areas. And the fact that Konami does not care to fix the game or move it to a new direction is a clear sign that it is aware that stupid people (like us) are going to buy it no matter what. Last year I made my stand though and I didn't buy Pro Evo 6; I was given a promo which I played and still playing until today. Why? Because there is no competition, no alternative to choose from and not because the game is excellent or, at least, good.

The series has become a shadow of what it used to be and it borders on mediocre.

FFS, they can't even bother to hit a steady frame rate...

I don't think its as bad as people make out. Its by no means perfect and PE6 for the 360 was the only game not to bring the series forward in my opinion.

I cant totally understand if people don't buy it, but I always enjoy playing the game so I'll continue to but it.

Anyway, Demo pls.

People will buy it because people love footy and are pretty much forced to accept the series' massive failings if they want a semi-decent game of footy online.

eg.

Where is the spectator mode?

Why can't I save and rate goals?

Why can't I choose teams outside of the top flight?

Why can't I take a team online in an ongoing league?

Why can't I choose where my goal keeper kicks out to?

Why can't I move in directions other than at 45 degrees?

Why can't I stop my players scoring comedy own goals of their own volition?

Why can't I control my players at free kicks, instead of them being forced into a wall and staying there long after the free kick is taken?

etc etc

These are the things that would add to the game, not extra shiny shorts, hairstyles that you never see outside of cut-scenes and ruddy diving.

The thing about PES 6 (on the Xbox 360) is that it really is is that bad! It's just that everything else is worse!

The thing is that, these days, there are no new contenders arriving, or at least that's how it seems. I remember in the Mega Drive days there would be a new footy game every week and I used to divide my time with Sensi and Dino Dini's as they were both excellent, although there were other decent games as well which I used to play, such as ISS.

However, now it seems that no-one can compete with FIFA and PES, which is a shame.

There is so much wrong with PES 6 that could be quite easily fixed. However, there are also loads of big problems, one of which has been a problem with football games for years and no-one seems to be able to fix it - player selection. I actually find it mystifying that, after 20 years of playing football games, I still have trouble selecting the right player. It's so frustrating when you can read an opponent's attack like a cheap novel and try to select the player that can easily cut off the attack, only to gain control of a player that is yards behind the attacker, although closer, which is why it selected them, I guess!? So press the button again and it takes you back to player you had before, so you press again, and again and by this time they're in on goal. Half your players are stood watching and...and...

I am sick to death of Adriano, as well :)

Plus, why the hell don't they give the teams a weighting so that you get more points if, for example, you beat Brazil with Lyon.

That way the people who always use Brazil/Inter etc will receive less points. That would be great.

Also, everytime you reach 10 disconnects you are docked a number of points. Let's cut that crap out, as well.

I just don't understand how the core issues of the game aren't fixed yet. Everyone complains about them and yet they're there year after year. Useless throw-ins, eight way movement, running on rails (super cancel is not an excuse, it's shit), passes going astray. Why, when I'm hammering throw when the keeper has the ball, does he kick it? It doesn't make any sense.

And yet, I still don't like Fifa. Every year there are a group of people who say 'hey,if you don't like Pro Evo this year then Fifa is a decent alternative this year!' And I try it and it still feels shallow and boring to Pro Evolution. Sigh.

I'm hoping that this year at least the online is not completely borked like last years fiasco. Not being able to connect to a game, insane button lag, frequent game crashes, timer timing out in the pause menu. What a shitshow that was.

People are buying it! Why the hell would Konami decide on spending money for fixing the issues? Its a disgrace actually. The faults and omissions are so evident that it hurts my soul. This is not just a sequel that comes every 2 or 3 years and you complain about it being the same as the last one. This is every fucking year. The same shit! Every! Fucking! Year!

So is there any reason why their isn't any third party disruption in the footy game market? Are footy games difficult to programme or is it just becasue of the licences issue?

I'd say it's licenses, yes. that's a chunk of the budget already and kids these days are bastards if they don't get the right kits. This is Football was the last 3rd party one and Konami scored a bit of an own goal when they ditched the ISS brand.

All the ones I can remember from the past 5 years or so completely tanked. Fifa and PES have a complete duopoly on the football market.

Also it's easy to bemoan the fact that people still buy PES even with so much stuff still wrong with it, but what else are you meant to play if you want a decent football game?

It's all about the online.

I'd love a 'build your own team' option that I could take online. Give me a set amount of points to spread around a team of my own making and let me play with it. I'd be able to recreate any team I liked (within reason) and the restriction on the number of points would stop people making a team full of Adriano clones.

That and condition, injuries and transfers that update to reflect their real life counterparts and PES would be the only game I need (well, along with Halo3)

E-mail Konami now! That sounds brilliant, especially if you could customise your own kits and team name etc.

So much potential, which makes it all the more frustrating that Konami are just churning out quick updates with nonsense updates like diving.

Licensing is only part of the issue. EA have exclusivity regarding the FIFA license, but any joe with the cash can spalsh out on the FIFPro license that Konami uses.

The biggest problem is the existing duopoly. You can't beat FIFA on its turf - licenses - because they've got more than you. So you have to make an even better football game, one that rivals or exceeds PES, in order to compete. Unfortunately, the football genre is one that has people clinging to a series and not letting go until it's pried out of their hands. It often doesn't matter if another game is actually better, because the controls and tricks they've learned over the years don't carry over. People have played a series on an almost daily basis for years. There's a comfort in the next seasonal update that you lose if you switch affiliation, and any new title is going to have to try to break that.

I think Eurogamer got it spot on when they reviewed FIFA 07 last year. A metaphor was conjured up involving brushing your teeth and then drinking orange juice. There's nothing wrong with orange juice, it's even pretty darn good, but moving directly from one to the other is horrible. Moving from game to game is similar.

I was watching the football on the weekend, and noticed Etherington's second goal for West Ham. The Hammers break, Bellamy has the ball on the right and hits it cross field to Etherington who knocks the ball a good ten to fifteen yards in front of him and chases it, giving him the time and space to smack it past Hahnemann.

You can't do this in FIFA. You can't do it in PES. You can't do it, because you can't knock the ball on, at least not to my knowledge. We have pads with eight available buttons, some analogue, and yet we can't actually do perhaps the first thing any kid would ever do with a football. Hit it a kick.

The last game I remember that allowed it was Actua Soccer 3. It was the sprint button - hold it longer and your player knocked it further, up to quite a distance if I recall right, and with no loss of momentum. It worked well as a way to beat players, especially as coupled with the shoulder buttons you could knock it slightly left or right instead of straight ahead. It gave you a good deal of control in this small area - sure, the game had plenty of flaws elsewhere, but this one thing it did rather well. A pacey forward could knock the ball into space and then run on to it, just like Etherington.
