I'd love to see more authentic faces for the unlockable classic players also. I know Roby Baggio makes the cut, but a real Valderrama would be a treat.

I'm sure I remember that when the first ISS games came out on the SNES the fact that they had a recognisable Valderrama (amongst others) was one of it's biggest selling points. Weird how FIFA then became the one with the accurate players.

Why would you include non-home nations in a home nations tournament?

I'll chase you lot down here too...

Because I'm shit at geography, Liam. Besides, you're best of mates, now. Dig the border up and work on a way to overthrow the Scots.

It's much easier of course to get an "accurate" depiction of a player when working with limited resolutions in 2D, your brain always does the rest. Give the man a classic haircut and a nice moustache and it's job done.

I always marvel though at the detail that Konami put into the player models beyond the face. I remember one day watching friends play PES5 and I wasn't wearing glasses. Yet I could still tell when Rooney or Beckham were on the ball based on the way they moved.

Aye, beyond the faces, EA just have rather generic body types. Resulting in a lot of players with the same physique. The faces were all messed up in PES6's 360 version but, when I saw Nobby Solano moving, I knew it was Nobby Solano.

Rooney and Beckham are good examples, really. Beckham tends to be absolutely nailed on each year. Michael Owen, too. With his midget ways.

Yeah, it works really well with Ronaldo when he does his jinky runs almost dancing on his tiptoes, just before I break his legs anyway.

It's perfect for all the Arsenal players as well, especially the ones like Hleb/Van Persie/Rosický/Fabregas. I can't describe it, you can just tell with the little touches of flair when running/dribbling who they are. It's quite amazing actually.

It also feels great, even if there may not actually be a difference in what actually happens. When you get the ball at the feet of Giggs or Ronaldo, there's visual feedback that your player's got technique that you can use. I start giving the ball more to them not just to dance through defences but also because when they do it, it's exciting and it's fun. Do the same with a functional player like Lee Carsley and it looks clumsy, accidental, lucky, even if done cleanly.

Just like real life, really. It then starts to govern your team selection. I pick players because they'll play attractively and dangerously, even if there are better, more solid guys on the bench without that grace.

That's one of the things that has attracted me to PES over other football games - you get a sense of difference between players that isn't just pace.

In the early 3d games it was the same. Bergkamp was basically a default player model but with almost a blond square perched on his head. I remember thinking they'd got him perfect.

Good job it works for Beckham, 'cos with his Ginger hair there is little else to recognise from a distance!

I always wondered what becks would think about that. He might have done mohawk, shaven, and even braids, but he's never gone ginger!

Aye, I don't understand why they don't shift to 360 degrees of movement. Football doesn't move in 8 directions. They introduced it for one of the Winning Eleven games, I think. Then scrapped it the following year.

WE6: Final Evolution on the GameCube.

I can't even think of a justifiable reason for dropping it. Even with the Dual Shock's wonky sticks, analogue movement is better. What's more puzzling is that EA dropped it from FIFA as well.

I dunno, maybe it causes issues with the tackling system, as if you can dribble in any direction, the animation for tackles needs to be able to sync up somehow and that's easier to do in eight directions. Maybe. I would think it's a rubbish excuse.

Someone should make an app for viewing replays from the various versions on your PC if they haven't done already. I'm getting sad that I'm eventually going to have to say goodbye to some classics from PES6.

Oh my this is an amazing idea - it would also solve the problem of having to wait 30 secs to load each replay! Doubt it would be possible as the game engine would still have to be loaded?

Yeah, probably ;)

It'd probably be a piece of piss for Konami to make new versions compatible with old replays any time where they weren't starting from scratch with a new engine - unfortunately I think that will be the case if all the versions are 'next-gen' now, wasn't the first 360 game a totally new one? At the very least they could add an option on the replay viewer to dump a video to your hard drive since the consoles all have decent storage capabilities now.

The PS2 video looks distinctly widescreen, I thought Seabass said that would never be possible - not that I'm complaining obviously.

Passes seem to be better weighted too so hopefully you won't have to super-cancel after every pissing pass now.

I'm not sure if it's just me but COM players seem to run into space a little more intelligently as well.

Looks good, if they can sort the lobs and make the slide tackle less effective then I will be pleased as punch.

No talk about the Wii announcement at all? Did it slip under everyone's radar or isn't it quite big news?

I completely missed that.

Interesting news. I wonder if the limitations of the Wii, graphically, might make them concenrate more on the actual gameplay. God, I hope so.

I will be keeping an eye on this.

surely the graphics on the 360 version aren't leaps ahead of what the wii can do? It's not an amazingly good looking game

What I mean is that Konami seem to have got bogged down with creating new animations and lighting effects, rather than focusing on the gameplay. I am hoping that, with the Wii version, they might not get so tempted to have crap like 'player breath' and instead might focus on gameplay.

Who knows. More likely you'll be able to waggle your finger to say 'no, no' at the ref when he gives you a card. Or, when the ref blows his whistle placing the Wiimote and nunchuck side-by-side will make your player pray for a good decision.
