What Comic Book Franchises are still left?

I think Cerebus could have worked up to around the Mothers & Daughters story, but I gave up on it after that because Dave Sim just went...'nanas.

The man's got some seriously dodgy ideas about stuff, and I found Cerebus to be almost unreadable towards the end. The first 4000 pages (or so) are quality though.

I loved Cerebus all the way through. That's not that I don't agree with the summation that Sim was a bit of a fruitcake at times and that he has some seriously odd ideas, but in terms of writing and artistry I'd argue that Cerebus, start to finish and especially in the completion of the narrative, is one of the high points of fiction, full stop. I don't need to neccesarily agree with him as a human being, as an artist and a creative Cerebus is one of the things I've enjoyed the most in any medium. His Alan Moore is amazing and the McKeever eps are fantata. Not McKeever... The Spawn guy, what'shisname. McFarlane that's it. The last day is monumentally good imo.

Also, while we're on the subject of amazing writer/artist combinations: Sam Keith;s The Maxx and whatsisfaces Creature Tech would be pretty cool as well.

Oh, I think as a piece of fiction it's a huge achievement, and the artwork is never less than fantastic, but I tended to miss the laugh out loud humour in the earlier stories.

I also happily admit that I didn't 'get' a whole lot of it towards the end...it went clean over my head.

^ Yes, especially seeing as he was cut out of every single X-Men movie.

I'd like to see Ultimate Avengers, with Sam Jackson as Nick Fury. It would be possible seeing as Fox have got the rights to the majority of the characters.

Deadpool!

I love Runaways but something tells me it was descend into teen crap and if they didn't cast Molly just right it would be awful. Plus, part of the appeal of Runaways is its off-hand cross-overs where it references other heroes, which would be a licensing nightmare for a movie.

Deadpool!

Nibbles in SPOT ON shocker!

The thing is, a Deadpool live action film wouldn't work. It would need to be an animated movie. Most of Deadpool's aceness comes from his expressions within his mask, and these expressions just wouldn't be viable in a live action movie. Hell... I'd settle for a new Deadpool solo comic series!

In terms of the X-Men, a Gambit film has to be made. IMO, he's the best character in the X-Men and has the best background. Not even including him in any of the 3 X-Men movies was criminal! Here's hoping that either Gambit or Deadpool get a cameo in the Wolverine movie.

WE3

Homeward Bound X Plague Dogs + Guns and shit

I got this yesterday, and while there's no doubt it's a great book, I can't see it working as a film in any way. Animation yes, film no.

Just about the only comic character I have a genuine interest in. I'd love to see a film about him.

It's because he wears pink and speaks French, isn't it sir? Bit of a saucy minx, isn't he sir? Ooh! Suit you sir!

Anyone mention The Spirit yet. That seems a bit more easily done than a lot of other stuff.

Frank Miller's already doing it!

Of Alan Moore's works, I think Tom Strong would be most suited to a film adaptation. It's not very convoluted, and has a pretty simple idea at its core - it's just done really, really well. :) The stories are mostly pretty self-contained so there wouldn't be all those problems of condensing down a single long story like Halo Jones. Having said that, perhaps the very fact that it's made up of short, self-contained stories would make it more appropriate for an episodic TV series (seems to be a trend in this topic). Also, there's still a fair amount of stuff in it that's designed specifically for the medium of comics, if not to the same extent as Watchmen.

There was a movie a couple of years ago called "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow", which not many people saw (I didn't) and even fewer liked, but the impression I got from the trailers was that it was going for the same kind of "retro-futuristic" aesthetic as Tom Strong.

A Tom Strong film will never get done, of course, and I'm happy with just the comics as they are - still, it's fun to speculate.

That picture of the spirit is horrid, its a shame that they (he) couldnt keep truer to eisner's style rather than subjecting the spirit to the sin cityifier.

If that man touches 'a contract with god' i might consider buying a gun.

I'd agree. I'm hoping that image has been produced to secure finance based on Miller's current popularity with film audiences. Either that or it's a deliberate wind up. He can't be thinking grim, muscular tough guy. Surely not?

Groo. I'd watch it.

I'm glad there's someone out there apart from me who loves the cheese-dip eating goon.

I'm going to boast now -

I have every single issue of the comics, Epic, Marvel, Image and Dark Horse!

How cool sad am I?

But it'd only work as a cartoon series.

Cable/Deadpool pretty much is a Deadpool "solo" series.

Not really, it has it's little 2-3 issue Deadpool solo archs, but it's still very much a double act. A great double act it is, but more Cable = less Deadpool, and less Deadpool is always a bad thing. I liked the little Deadpool run that the comics had with him getting his own comics for a good few issues, but that just made me wish that they'd make a new solo series! That said, I'll settle for C&D, it's a superb little series. They've got the buddy dynamic down to a tee with Cable and Deadpool.

Yeah, it definitely needs to be animation. It is very much like Plague Dogs but with lots of guns. I think a live action version with cgi animals would look a little strange.

Yeah, I think an animated adaptation of WE3 could work - Live-action would be weird but the kind of high-detail animation a crowd like Studio IG do could be pretty amazing.

i paid some shady ebay guy cash to get the entire series on vcd (!!) i was that desperate to see it again. it was totally worth it though, the humour in these cartoons is just fantastic. never seen the live action series though, i'd quite like to.

There’s a Peter Milligan comic called Skin that’d make a great film. It’s the story of a young thalidomide victim growing up in the 80’s who gets involved in the skinhead movement. Imagine 'This is England' taken to crazy level. Film it please.

I can't see it working as a film at all really. Or someone deciding to make it, either. It's a good book though.

That's as fucking fake as you like, that.

I wondered that at first, so before linking to the image on Wikipedia I checked and the image was in news articles on placeslike Comic Book Resources and Superhero Hype.

I've not really read many of the original Spirit stories, except for the examples will Eisner himself used in his "Comics and Sequential Art" book. Has anyone read any of Darwyn Cooke's issues of the recently-revived comic? After reading his brilliant "DC: The New Frontier", I'd like to look at them.
