CD Mix Club June

I'd consider it but I only joined up in March I think, so I missed quite a lot of it... Oh and I can't mix at all. Did you just pick your favourite tracks off the cds you'd received to make a new mix or did you pick tracks that others really loved as well?

People send in the track they liked the most and/or meant the most to them out of the mix clubs they received during the year and then the person compiling it all sorts out a tracklist and makes the whole lot available for download.

My cd for moodymann went in the post today.

Received, thanks. Listening now. Delightful. 1st track is going to annoy me as I do know it. I think I may have it on this :

Definately going to get some repeated plays, this. Bossa Nova never tires and can't fail to bring on the feel good vibes. Muchos Gracias! Full feedback in the week...

Edit : That Goin' Out Of My Head track - fuckin' corker! Luther Vandross cover, yeah. Superb!

Feedback for mine:

1) A grower, didn't like it at first but repeated listens warmed me to it. Very summery, powerpop - especially like the slightly organny sounding guitar (or guitar sounding organ).

2) Dig this one - although I think it'd more likely something I'd listen to in the background. Very smoky, filmic atmosphere to it.

3) I wish the sun was out for this to be appreciated properly, everything about it screams summer. There's a really hazy, chilled vibe to it - there's something about the drums on this track, they just seem exactly the right speed for some reason. Builds up really nicely at the end too.

4) This is pretty fun, the verses work much better than the slightly thrashy chorus. I recognise this from somewhere, can't place it for the life of me though.

5) I'm sure this is Mike Patton singing - nice enough as an interlude but nothing too memorable.

6) I HATED this at first, the 1st half is terrible - really staid and just dull dull dull. If it wasn't on one of these CDs I'd have skipped it within 20 seconds. But then...there's a wonderful fuzzed out, feedback drenched guitar section which almost makes up for everything.

7) Some lovely percussive, Brazilian rock - can't get enough of this.

:P Another bad beginning, the singer sounds a bit like Wayne Coyne (with a similar 'interesting' singing style) and the song plods along at a boring tempo - I'd have skipped this for sure again. Then a fucking AMAZING solo kicks in, just everything that's great about music. It snarls and chops with loads of feedback and distortion. Even when the same verses come back from the start, it just sounds much more alive. 10/10 for that bit.

9) I know this is Melting Pot, but I'm pretty sure it isn't the original - there's something slightly modern about the sound of the production, and the fact it goes on for 10 minutes. Reassuringly funky, with some pretty tight playing throughout - the drum break at about 6 minutes is aces.

10) :) I love these male/female vocals type songs, a great ender.

Although it skips between styles a bit at times, the CD doesn't sound too random. Felt just the right length too, I've listened to it a few times because of it. Ta much, any chance of a tracklist?

Right, feedback for elmo. Um, it's not exceptionally positive, I'm afraid, because I don't really have much appreciation for - I don't even know what to call it, modern indie guitar stuff, perhaps. But it's not all bad, so take heart.

I looked up what I could on the web but it's possible I've come up with the wrong bands.

1 - Well, there's always room for Jungle Boogie, great start even if it's not a new discovery.

2 - Head Automatica? I liked the start with the beat and the horns, but once it progressed from that I just wanted it to go back.

3 - Couldn't figure out what this was, but I'm afraid I found it annoying. It sounded a bit like something I'd expect to hear in a Gran Turismo game, where it wouldn't bother me as much - but I couldn't sit and listen to this as a primary activity.

4 - The Strokes? Sorry, leaves me cold. I just can't remember anything about it five minutes later, it makes no impact.

5 - Kings of Leon? Same again, soz. All these modern guitar bands - Strokes, Leon, Killers, Hives - I can't differentiate between them and I just want to skip tracks when I hear them. It's probably an appalling thing to hear if you like them, but that's how it is. I think Sonic Youth are the only active guitar band I keep up with, and beyond that I stick to relics like the Velvets, JMC and MC5, and occasionally more 'contemporary' stuff like Fugazi. I am not the best person for this disc, so far.

6 - Simple Kid? Well, similar to track 2 I was enjoying this at the start with its odd instrumentation and psychy Beatles strings. until the vocals came in. I started enjoyed it again every time the voice stopped, but I couldn't put up with that mock-Thom-Yorke broken falsetto.

7 - Ah, PJ Harvey, I can get behind that at least. We're on the mend, but wait -

8 - Millionaire? Another one that annoyed me, sadly.

9 - The Good, the Bad, and the Queen? Now this was interesting, as I'd been meaning to check them out but it was buried deep in the pile of things in the periphery. And it turned out I did like it, so I'll be investigating them some more when I remember. Disc result!

10 - People Under the Stairs? Hadn't heard these before but I did really enjoy this understated track with its almost complete focus on the fine rap performance.

So yeah, unfortunately your no doubt careful selections were largely wasted on me, I'm sorry to say, but I'm really glad I heard those last two tracks and like all good-hearted people I'm always happy to hear Kool & the Gang. So thanks for that stuff, and hopefully you'll get someone a little more appreciative and in tune with your tastes next time round...

And here's me track listing for idespair before I absent-mindedly delete it from iTunes:

1 - I Love Acid (Luke Vibert)

2 - Spaldang (THD)

3 - The Barn (303 Kebab Mix) (Squarepusher)

4 - Call It What You Want (Richie Hawtin)

5 - Glob (Plastikman)

6 - Universal Indicator Green (A1) (Universal Indicator)

7 - Where's Your Child? (Bam Bam)

8 - Video Clash (Lil' Louis)

9 - Bang the Acid (Damon Wild & Tim Taylor)

10 - Dirty Fucker (Luke Vibert)

11 - Act IV (Theatre of Acid)

12 - Neurology (Psychic TV)

Every one a raver! Except for the last one, but I couldn't decide on a track suitable to close on, so I fell back on the time-honoured technique of a track with Charles Manson in one ear and Jim Jones in the other, as a dire warning of what could happen to you if you listen to too much acid house like they did.

Cheers for the tracklist.

Interested to see it was Yo La Tengo that I didn't like, as everything else I've heard by them I've loved. I might have to check out some Dinosaur Jr too. Should have known it was The Roots doing Melting Pot, I have that album!

May I suggest for Dino Jr, "You're Living All Over Me" or their latest, "Beyond" which is absolutely amazing and filled full of those amazing Mascis solos. I read a review recently which summed up J's guitar playing perfectly. "Mascis plays guitar like a skilled skateboarder. He seems like he's always on the edge, almost pushing the limits too far while at the same time always remaining in control."

Ta for that, my emusic subscription renews again in a day or two so I'll pick them up then. Always a name I've read about but haven't given a chance.

Feedback for Bleep

I can see that this will be a tricky all mixed-up-athon! I’ll have to do it by times I guess…I think that up to 3.56 was one tune, very jolly with lots of noodles that reminded me of the theme tune for ‘Monkey’ by Godeigo…then it goes a bit plinky plonk. Sort of okay, I like the sweeping sounds best. Then whatever comes in at 6.52 sounds cool. A bit like the Imperial March done in a night club! Then it really gets going around 8.20, love the sound of this, although I’d prefer it without the beats I think. Was loving it all up until 13.00, not too keen on that sound, it’s like a squelchy pop salsa. Especially not into the drumming, it’s a bit too neo-Spiral Tribe for me! Liking what comes in at 17.00…heh, yes, this is a rocking tune. Oops, then it stopped! And back again. I really like this. A pity it’s so short, as it seems to change again at 19.50 and go all noodly, but pleasantly so. I like this though; it’s very familiar for some reason. Great when it got going too, although is it mixing in to something else around 23.30? Sounds like it should maybe be a bit faster…25.40…initial signs are good, although I can’t escape the feeling that I’m in David Sylvian’s house while he learns how to programme his new keyboard! Quite pleasant, but I’m waiting for it to go somewhere…28.10 and I’m liking these French vocals…it’s like the spoken bits off ‘Girls and Boys’ by Prince. And some awesome keyboard thumps coming in. Heh, this is a great one. Nice and austere electronics. Is something else coming in at 31.20? Not keen on this really. Something else around 33.20? I like the beats here, and the vocals. Not so keen from 35.10, too chaotic for me. 37.15 I like the sound of this, sounds like ‘Ride like the Wind’ danced up at the beginning. I love the melody on this, and the brassy synths. Definitely my favourite thing on the cd so far. And it’s just getting more and more awesome! I’m getting my groove on without a doubt. Not sold on the sax, but I can forgive it. Quite a jarring transition at 42.40 into the next track, I really like this though, it sounds like their moog is on the blink! Great little tune. Some oddness at 44.40…don’t really like the beat it’s moved into…far too ‘Phuture’ for me I’m afraid, I find it tedious and a bit grating. Something cool comes crashing in at 49.00, much more up my street this one. It’s like a raid by the electro police, and they’re welcome. Is it two tunes, or sound effects mixed over one? Whatever, I like it! I’m not feeling this track at 53.00 so much. It’s a bit clunky. 55.12…this is good. It’s soothing me. Just when I’m thinking what a toe-tapper this is, something falls in at 58.22 that I don’t really like. It’s a bit like the sort of thing that the producers might have knocked together to go on a Nona Hendryx b-side! Is this something new at 1.00.04? Or still the same track? I’m not sure. It doesn’t improve for me when the vocals come in I’m afraid. 1.03.20, I like the beats and keys a lot, but not the snatch of vocals, they really spoil it. Great, otherwise. 1.04.58, not doing a lot for me. 1.06.06, nice little fade, a pleasant track. Kind of like an electro version of Weather Report. Not bad.1.08.22, starts nice, love the little warbling noises when they come in…this is a cool tune. Lots of stuff going on here that I like. Something coming in at 1.10.15? Some cool scratching / jet effects, for sure! My brain is gobbling this up. It’s like an electro steam train, really good fun. Is this a new track around 1.12.00? It’s nice too…really love the keys in this, and the vocals…awesome tune. Like a cross between the Akira soundtrack and Art of Noise…lovely. Cool little bit of Zen flutes at the end, and we’re done!

I’m really fifty-fifty on your choice of tunes here, as you can see…plenty of stuff I have no time for, but plenty I thought was great. I hope I managed to split the tracks properly! Is there any chance that you could post up the 37.15, 42.40 and 1.12.00 tracks on their own please bleep? I’d like to give them a proper listen if I may. Thanks a lot for the cd; it’s clear that a lot of effort went into it. Now hit me up with the track list, daddyo!
