Mine turned up in the post today. Probably won't have chance to give it a listen before work on Monday, but the 3 3 written around the 0 in the centre makes me hope for some squelchy acid goodness. I'm a little scared by the front cover though - what's in his hand off camera?

I can't remember what photo it was, to be honest - it was one from a book in an amazing series called Life Cycles, a sociology / psychology series in which every volume is half-filled with a lunatic selection of stock photos (no matter what the subject matter, every one will have boobs in, guaranteed). Ah, was it the guy who's dressed a bit like Mario (the colours are correct in the book)? If so, we may never know, because that's the full photo.

Acid ahoy, definitely.

OK, this is for Bleep but I don't even know if he has listened to it yet:

1. Aphex Twin - White Blur

2. Coil - Where Are You?

3. Radicalfashion - Shousetsu

4. Wim Mertens - Circular Breathing

5. Goldmund - 25 Thousand Miles

6. Polygon Window - Quino - Phec

7. The Caretaker - We Cannot Escape The Past

8. Vangelis - Blush Response

9. David Holmes - No Man's Land

10. Harold Budd - The Chill Air

11. Colleen - Babies

This one took me a long time to put together and get it flowing how I liked it and to get it sounding nicely weird, so if I get no feedback I *will* be using it again next month.

Any thoughts yet Mr.Vim?

Well, get a load of this then:

01 - some housey thing. Pleasant enough but it didn't really affect me.

02 - similar sort of track to 01 but I did like this much more. It has some rich sounds going on and just when yout hink it can't get any more epic it adds in another layer. Yes, good track.

03 - very similar to the last track but felt a bit weedy in comparison. Okay but nothing more.

04 - I think this is Radiohead isn't it? It's a very long track (10+ mins) but really very good indeed. Another track that gets all epic and massive near the end. Good choice.

05 - Daft Punk? I love this sort of solid, over-compressed sound. Sounds a bit like some classical music MIDI file pumped up for the dancefloor. Good track.

06 - Happen to know this one: Was (Not Was) - Out Come The Freaks. It's not my usual sort of listening but it is rather infectious. Do The Dinosaur and what was that other one? Raise Your Head (Let's Go To Bed), I think it was. They had more hits than I thought. Always good fun.

07 - Kid Creole and the Coconuts - Wonderful Thing Baby. I only remember this because they played this one tons on Radio One in my youth. Took me right back to the early-mid 80s :). Like the WNW track it's got that big beat and gives you that feelgood feeling. Yeah I had a smile when this came on.

08 - Enter Gilles Peterson territory here. Take out the singing and this would be ace. I love the cut-up track on that. The beat jerks along nicely. I'm a sucker for cut-up stuff like this.

09 - Oo, proper jazz. Leaving my area of expertise here so I can only go on how this makes me feel. It's good relaxing music, doesn't make me want to skip to the next track. I dunno, I'm not allergic to jazz but I don't really know enough about it to really get into it. It's an okay track though.

10 - Is this a jazz cover of something? The tune seems familiar. I love the chords in this and it seems tighter than the previous track. Again, it's okay, but not the sort of thing I'd normally go out of my way to listen to. I can appreciate the quality though.

Now I know who did this mix it makes perfect sense. Proper Gilles Peterson material here, and that's not a bad thing. I most enjoyed tracks 02, 04, 05 and 07 - put a smile on my face and as it's not something I normally listen to it was a pleasant surprise. There were no duffers on here, though track 01 did get a tad boring.

Cheers for the mix, it gave me some decent vibes there :)

I don't have mine yet. :)

oh hi:

Mine was due to get compiled on Sunday but my PC has broken. I'll get it out (missus) as soon as I can.

New PC should arrive on Wednesday, I'll try and have it posted early WC 09 July. One of those things I'm afraid, I've not forgotten about you :)

Noob, I trust you're having a good listen to my mix. Any thoughts?

oooh, yes!!!

im not going to give a track by track commentary, but rather comment on the mix as a whole.

started off with really nice, quiet techie noises and clicks, and got stronger as the tracks went on, but i would have to say that tracks 12/13/14 are my faves. the vocals, the actual tunes, amazing!!!

it was a real surprise to get something like that this month, as its something i wasnt expecting at all.

was lovely though. a definite 8/10 with a bit of :) (of course!). so thank you. :)

tracklist PLZ!!!

Tracklist sounds good David. I love Coil.

Oh god, I don't. I saw them live, along with Plaid, and Mouse On Mars. I was sat next to the mum, of one of the guys from the band. But they played this extremely annoying drone music, and I just hated it.

Feedback for Noob:

The first track is off that Justice album I really liked this and nearly put it on my own mix this month. After that I didn't really enjoy much else on my first listen but I've perservered and found it to be a real grower!

2 - Not so keen on this the chorus doesn't do anything for me.

3 - Didn't like this but it's grown on me nice mix of sounds and a much better chorus than 2.

4 - Not too bad sounds a bit like Royksopp in places and I liked the break down after about 2 minutes.

5 - Like the strings on this a lot.

6 - I spend half my time trying to figure out the vocalist (sounds a bit like the woman from Texas) not too bad but doesn't do enough for my liking.

7 - Upbeat older style track which I'd usually skip.

8 - It's Tracey Thorn on vocals she's got such a distinctive voice. This is one of the highlights for me.

9 - Hated this at first but I really like this now quite repetitive but really interesting sounds.

10 - A nice cover but too similar to 7 although I didn't skip this one!

11 - A bit too country sounding and slow for my liking a skipper I'm afraid.

12 - Took a bit to get going but some more strings I'm a sucker for this stuff. Wasn't too keen on the vocals but the backing makes up for it.

I was dreading having to come on and slate this as I can tell that you're a really positive guy on the forum but I perserverd with it and I actually really enjoyed it after a few listens. It works best when I'm working at my desk and it's playing in the background.

Tracklist please squire!

am really pleased that you have kept trying with it. i actually like this mix alot myself and have been playing it to death since in conception.

right, that tracklist...

1. the party - justice - was expecting so much more from this album and its half delivered. shame, but this track is ace!

2. so you say - siobhan donaghy - new single from the ex sugababe who i have a really big soft spot for. just lovely!

3. strung out - dot allison - she of one dove fame made a cracking album a few years back which i have recently been rediscovering.

4. headlock - imogen heap - bonkers lady who i just happened across and thought this song sat quite nicely in the mix.

5. time flies - nina hynes - irish singer who i absolutely love because she uses lovely sounds and has a great sort of cartoon imagery in her vocals.

6. the hush - rae & christian - another one i have rediscovered recently. really wanted to put another track form the album here but they just didnt seem to fit. you are right though, it is the chick from texas on vocals!

7. do i love you? indeed i do! - frank wilson - from a compilation cd & accompanying book 'last night a dj saved my life'. amzing old old tune which just makes me wanna just up and down singing. im a sucker for this sorta stuff.

8. its all true - tracey thorn - single from her 2nd recently released solo album which is a cracker. simple as.

9. frequency 7 (dance mix) - visage - i love the squelchy sorta sound of this. brilliant, just brilliant!!! from the same album as frank wilson.

10. tainted love - gloria jones - this has such energy and a real sense of urgency which i love. i do love me a bit of northern soul!

11. my god - gemma hayes - another irish singer/songwriter lady here who is absolutely amazing. lovely voice and astounding live. thought to bring the mix to a close i would start with this. lovely. ;)

12 - be here now - ray lamontagne - from his new album. possibly the stand out track for me. i love the etherial sort of sound of this and the way it seems to 'flow'. a perfect ending really.

anyway, glad you enjoyed it in the end!

:D

Tracklisting:

01. Kelley Polar - Rosenband

02. Willy Baxter - Aiming High (Original Mix)

03. Professor Genius - Pegaso

04. Chateau Flight - Extract from their soundtrack to Les Vampires

05. datA - Morphosis

06. Was (Not Was) - Out Come The Freaks (Remix Version)

07. Kid Creole & the Coconuts - I'm A Wonderful Thing Baby (Remix Version)

08. Outlines - Just A Lil Lovin (Album Version)

09. Christian Prommer - Strings Of Life

10. The Matthew Herbert Big Band - Turning Pages

The first three tracks I could (and have been) listen to on repeat. Kelley Polar seems to be a marmite artist, probably due to his vocals? I really like his style though; can't wait for the new album. Willy Baxter is a guy I found on Myspace a few months back and I'm pleased to have helped him get a track signed by posting about his music on 24:Hours. Aiming High is available digitally from this week :( Professor Genius is another Myspace find and he just dropped his debut LP, a limited to 300 CDR with 9 tracks of retro synth action. It's absolutely brilliant!

Chateau Flight were commisioned to write a soundtrack to the silent movie Les Vampires (I think it's from 1913 or something) last year. The album is just under 40 minutes long and is a great mix of styles. This is probably my favourite section, it's all about the synth lines in the 3rd minute for me. I was tempted to cut the second, more energetic half, but thought better of it. datA is some young french dude. Morphosis is from his second EP. His style seems very videogame influenced to me. Love the retro vibe again from this.

I'm not big on 80s knowledge and I always imagined Was (Not Was) to be some sort of weedy Tears for Fears type band. I didn't even realise it was them that did Walk the Dinosaur! I bought some 'Mutant Disco' compilations from the Play sale, featuring Zed Records artists. The Was (not Was) tracks included were all really good. The Kid Creole track is from the same compilation. I love the groove, the chords and the tone of his delivery.

I'm a sucker for some good cut-up action too. I almost had Akufen's Deck the House on the mix but felt that too much might spoil the fun! Outlines was a stand out track fromt the recent '10 years of Sonar Kollektiv' album. Strings of Life is a cover version (originally by Derrick May, of course). Another (new, this time) Sonar Kollektiv release that I've had on repeat since buying. Just rediscovered Turning Pages on an old Nu-Jazz compilation. I'd forgotton just how amazing it is. I particularly love the change in pace in the 5th minute. Again, another track I've been listening to over and over.

Sorry about the waffle :D glad you got some enjoyment from the cd.

I'm so great, I haven't done my feedback, or sent my CD.

I'm sorry :)

Gotta say as a summary of the feedback I will later give in detail, it was way too instrumental for my tastes, but with some stuff I really liked like Ladytron and Kraftwerk, albeit stuff I already knew.

Anyone up to organising this...

July will again a month off for the mix club and marks the 3 year anniversary of the whole deal. Again much like last year it would be great if somebody could organise an anniversary CD (for previous years see 2005 curated by Acidbearboy and 2006 curated by Mr Do) I'll leave it amongst you lot to decide.

Anyone up to organising this...

I'd consider it but I only joined up in March I think, so I missed quite a lot of it... Oh and I can't mix at all. Did you just pick your favourite tracks off the cds you'd received to make a new mix or did you pick tracks that others really loved as well?
