I get it. I have a few little collections myself. Actually what you've said makes it all make a bit more sense to me. To be honest I can see the joy in collection lovingly fan-made Etsy-type stuff over cash-ins from some company that just bought the rights for a well-remembered game in order to make some profit.

It's surprising how much effort some put in, seen loads that go above the grade with posters, artwork and inserts to pad it out and make it special. I'm still holding out for a boxed version of the Ghostbusters NES remake. Fixed all the awful bugs with lots of tweaks and turned it into a pretty good game, pretty recent release and no ones touched it yet sadly.

Oops I meant Mystery World Dizzy. But in the Dizzy cases they have approval by Codemasters and are official in so far as I would class them as a proper release. But anyone can hack anything and print a box, many do just look at the likes of Etsy. I'm aiming to get one of the many, many NES copies of FF7 and Pokemon Yellow at some point, over the years I've seen a load pop up with amazing boxes/manuals that were recreations which tend to go for around the £50 mark. If there wasn't a market for them they wouldn't sell but they do. Nothing quite like having a lovely, fresh box on a shelf in a collection than just a plain disc or game. Wouldn't be collectors if we didn't like the actual stuff in hand.

Yep, for instance

That front one never got an SMS release in any country.  But someone ported the GameGear version to Master System (which makes for a better game given the larger screen size). You can download the rom for free but I'm very happy about the £20 I paid for a copy of it someone put on a cart to go with my 4 "official" releases.

Ebay Jag auctions really wind me up primarily  due to:

i) My Jag console went MIA over 20 years ago after I leant it to someone (still have most of my game carts)

ii) The console was utter horse shit

iii) Who the hell keeps the prices inflated as would think the fans were either now in care homes or insane asylums so should be a buyer's market.

If it's new collector's after something not quite mainstream why don't they chase after decent retro console like the PC Engine which can be picked up for a fraction of the cost?

Why don't you just flog em? Games are meant to be played not sat gathering dust on a shelf. The market is like it is because so few were produced thanks to Atari making a mess and everyone jumps on things at silly prices.

If he's checking eBay for hardware prices it sounds like he wants to replace his missing one and play the games again.

Indeed it's the desire to play the handful of decent games that keeps me occasionally browsing ebay but I balk at paying those prices for what I know was a very very flawed console especially as I have a faint glimmer of false hope that my missing leant one might turn up in the loft of a friend or family member some day.
