Received mine today while I was at work, someone clearly believes in recycling their packaging ;) It's called "Fuck Uncle Sam"

1 - Not too much going on here, fairly minimal. Sort of Boards of Canada sound to it, like a soundtrack to a desolate landscape, quite moody. It's not bad but it's about a minute too long

2 - Instantly like the foreign gibberish in this one, sounds like maybe a found piece of speech because it doesn't go with the music but I like it because of that. I got a bit worried at the beginning of the operatic vocals, something I normally detest but it works well here with the strings

3 - Knew it was Bjork from the first syllable, I don't recognise the track but it's great. Nice battle trumpets! If this is off the new album, I might just have to buy it tomorrow

4 - I keep expecting this to burst into "The Circle of Life" from the Lion King. Another quite minimal one, but it works well. Oooh! Thumb pianos! Enjoyed the little piano loop that went through this.

5 - Aphex Twin without a doubt, Richard D. James album if I'm not mistaken? Yellow Calx? Can't complain when it comes to Aphex... except you'll probably tell me that it's not him.

6 - Sounds like I'm in a nightmare being chased by a gigantic duck. This wouldn't be out of place on the soundtrack to Jam. Again, sounds like Aphex or someone who's influenced by him at any rate. Some sort of electronic vocal has entered the mix now, scratchy glitches all over the place, probably the highlight so far, well after Bjork. I've just noticed track 8 is 6 seconds long, I'm intrigued...

7 - This one is messing with my head, the voice seems to be panning from speaker to speaker very, very quickly but I'm almost sure it's not. I thought this one sounded slightly more commercial to start off with, I couldn't be more wrong. The wee "oooOOOO" and "aaaAAAHHH" bits are brilliant, I think it's meant to have slightly commerical bits as a piss take as I listen further. The sampled vocal bits work really well, which surprises me as they normally don't to my ears. I'd take a guess that this is Squarepusher but I don't think it is. Ahh there's panning bits now at the end

8 - Demented laughter, very Butthole Surfers

9 - This one sounds like Sonic The Hedgehog in a blender. Will it blend? Yes and it will sound pretty good too. I can't understand how people plump for commercial dance music when there's stuff like this around.

10 - Noticably F.A.T rewind the beat... lots of rewound vocals at the start of this, orchestral string arrangements have just come in, not sure how well the two mix so far, pretty piano's come in now, as has my sister who's just asked me "What the hell are you listening to?!" The track works better when there's no fucked up vocals over it towards the 5 minute mark, probably the least effective track here, I appreciate what it was trying to do, just don't think it worked as well as it could have

11 - More computer game effect sounds, quite aggressive. I'm going to attempt a music journo style classification of this as "Glitchy Drum and Basscore..." with the obligitory "...On Acid." I'm guessing it's maybe Venetian Snares. Very high octane, doesn't carry much of a tune but is very enjoyable none the less. Nice Richard Pryor sample, ahhh, the "Fuck Uncle Sam" of the title.

This mix was on fire (much like Richard Pryor) and I enjoyed it greatly, while it's not the sort of thing I listen to on a regular basis, it's still a sort of music I greatly enjoy when it's done right, and all of this stuff is. There wasn't too much (if any) active mixing of tracks but they all flowed into each other seamlessly, varying the theme enough to keep me from getting bored while at the same time, not making massive jumps from Slayer to Marvin Gaye to Balkan folk music which is what always seems to happen with mine. I need to take tips from whoever this belongs to (acidbearboy?) and Mr. Do

Damn, I'm an idiot. I still haven't sent the CD, and what with it being a bank holiday weekend it's likely that my recipient won't be receiving it until the very end of the month - sorry, MechE!

Shit, me too, sorry noob. If anyone's expecting feedback from me, I'm sorry, but I've been at my parents this week so I haven't had a chance to listen yet. Sorry - been totally rubbish this month. Can I use exams as an excuse?

REVUE:

1) A scritching-scratchin opener. Good buildup with the strings and whatever. Dudey instrumental, this. Sounds like a theme song!

2) Oh woah, this is like one of those early 90s rap backing tracks or something. Nearly goes into clown music at the end, too.

3) (I reckon it's another goldbricker disc, now) Build up track, sounds like. Sounds like a heart monitor-musical instrument, this. Going into...

4) ...The Avalanches? Sounded like it was gonna, anyway. It's electro! Deceptive. I can't tell if it's skipping or that's how it was made ;) Oh wait, it is. :( The CD's a bit borked. NEXT SONG

5) BORKED TRACK

6) Beginning's a bit borked, but it goes into some nice, laid-back disco. Ooh, I like this one a bit (wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it, but still good)

7) Reminds me of ABC, this intro. Hmm. Tad repetitive this. Nice little twiddly-noises, though.

:D Ooh, I like Madlib tracks. Great backing track, this. I don't think much of the rapping...

9) Kind of jazzy backing, this. Actually, I really like this one, perfect background stuff. In a good way!

10) Kind of goes...nowhere, this one. Bit irritating in a DJ Yoda style. Bah

11) Kind of slips by, that one. Scandinavian electro-girl-pop. Erm...filler track?

12) Not bad. Be something you'd dance to and then think 'what' and be confused. I like the track a little, goes on a bit, though. Like JRSF stuff.

13) Kind of...yeah. Goes on a bit. :D

14) I like this one. I don't know if the drums deserve to be there, though. Or the vocals! Ah, I'm a picky pea.

I think that's my thing with this album; good dancing music, but I couldn't listen to it for days on end, I need healthy doses of variety within tracks. Very good mix though, I'm not sure if I'm the audience for most of the stuff; there's about 4 or 5 tracks that appeal to me here, probably someone else's cup of tea, definitely.

I'll send my bastard tomorrow morning, I swear...

Received mine today while I was at work, someone clearly believes in recycling their packaging :( It's called "Fuck Uncle Sam"

I hate buying jiffy bags ;)

01. Denzel + Huhn - Kinogat

02. Múm / Sjón - She Introduces Herself

03. Bjork - Wanderlust

04. Susumu Yokota - Card Nation

05. Aphex Twin - Yellow Calx

06. Com.A - Trip to Encyclopedia (Leftovers mix by Taisuke Matsuo)

07. Com.A - Mix Rudegal

08. Com.A - We Are Living in a Huge Hospital

09. Clark - Proper Mid-Fi

10. Com.A - Hidden Command (Massacremates mix by World's end Girlfriend)

11. Xanopticon vs Dev/Null - Agoraphobic Nosebleed rmx

(yeah, that looks like a lot of Com.A at first glance but one is an original track, two are remixes which bear no resembelance in style really and one is six seconds long)

3 - Knew it was Bjork from the first syllable, I don't recognise the track but it's great. Nice battle trumpets! If this is off the new album, I might just have to buy it tomorrow

It is, but the new album is very hit and miss. This is one of the better tracks, certainly.

5 - Aphex Twin without a doubt, Richard D. James album if I'm not mistaken? Yellow Calx? Can't complain when it comes to Aphex... except you'll probably tell me that it's not him.

IT'S NOT HIM (it is)

6 - Sounds like I'm in a nightmare being chased by a gigantic duck. This wouldn't be out of place on the soundtrack to Jam. Again, sounds like Aphex or someone who's influenced by him at any rate. Some sort of electronic vocal has entered the mix now, scratchy glitches all over the place, probably the highlight so far, well after Bjork. I've just noticed track 8 is 6 seconds long, I'm intrigued...

This is a quality, quality remix. The original is a decent upbeat track that's very boppy but this plods along menacingly with the distorted piano sounds and the way the whole thing is beat-driven. I'm glad you liked this one.

A Com.A original to compare and contrast :D

9 - This one sounds like Sonic The Hedgehog in a blender. Will it blend? Yes and it will sound pretty good too. I can't understand how people plump for commercial dance music when there's stuff like this around.

Taken from 'Throttle Clarence' - a 3" CD that was only available when buying his debut album direct from Warp records. I saw this guy supporting 65daysofstatic and was blown away. The album is a bit more thoughtful than this, umm, 'racket' but well worth a listen.

Hmm. I love this one personally but was in something of a quandary as to whether to include it or to go with something from World's End Girlfriend's original catalogue instead... never mind, can't win 'em all.

I like ending with noise :D No frills whatsoever here.

This mix was on fire (much like Richard Pryor) and I enjoyed it greatly, while it's not the sort of thing I listen to on a regular basis, it's still a sort of music I greatly enjoy when it's done right, and all of this stuff is. Well, after sending you that blues CD of Rowan Morrison's last month I was certain you'd hate this - but decided to go ahead anyway, once I've started a mix I tend not to be able to alter direction very easily. No mixing present whatsoever (not talented enough), just a lot of love. I've made plenty of shit mix CDs in the early years so I've picked up a few tips on how to make them flow a bit these days!

Gonna have to research some of that stuff. I like a wide range of music, if it's something a bit different I'll definitely give it a chance but if it's overly commercial (50 cent), is concerned with image over substance (hair metal) or something that's just boring (Snow Patrol/Coldplay) then I'll give it a miss

Thanks for the CD mystery sender! I haven't had a chance to give it a proper listen yet but will at some point over this long weekend and post some feedback, I liked the little snippets I've heard certainly.

bph:

Really didn't know what to expect from you, to be honest. I was half expecting to put the CD in and be greeted immediately with some KRS-One or MF Grimm or something, but on the other hand I knew that was what you'd want me to be expecting, and so I wasn't really all that shocked to be greeted with a rather lovely little guitar-centred number. Although it ends rather suddenly (and the bass seems a little too heavy for some reason), it does act as a very welcome introduction to a CD which I have enjoyed immensely. Track two is similarly attention grabbing. The lovely breakdown with the guitars is excellent, and the the vocals seem oddly familiar, but I can't place them. The moment the drums come in just after the three minute mark makes me smile.

Although I find track three slightly more transparent than the rest of the songs on my new CD, it does work very well within the mix. Again, I'm pretty sure I know the artist, but after repeated listens I still cannot make my mind up over who it is. Despite the slow start I always end up bobbing along to it in the end, though I still think the natural end to the song is around the seven minute area. Track four reminds me quite a lot of Broken Social Scene, but I don't recognise it. It sounds extremely similar production-wise, and the more I listen to it the more I think it reminds me of them, but I don't recognise the vocalist, and I have their CD and have seen them live and I think the chances of it being from their other release is slim, and so, once again, I am extremely puzzled as to who this is, but I am very interested in knowing. The little breakdowns mid-way through the song are so reminiscent of BSS.

The fifth track was a nice mix of old-school organ-esque noises and some bongo drumming and I do love a bit of that every now and then. Again, within the context of the CD it was a great inclusion, and I love the bassline as well. For tracks six and seven I really didn't know what to write, to be honest. Again, you've stumped me when it comes to the artist, but the vocals in the former were insane enough for me to be excused from that anyway, surely? Both of these tracks are pretty insane, and though I've had a few glasses of wine writing this, they have almost convinced me I've taken some extremely potent mushrooms as well. Well, maybe not, but they are pretty strange and wonderful. The sheer pace of track seven is a sound to behold. I am very interested in knowing who this is.

Track eight is definitely my favourite. It's just so self-controlled and hypnotic. The beat kinda chugs along at its own pace as slow and as melancholic as it wants, and the little instrumental additions midway through are ace, as well as the flute-like solo at the end. Although it is over seven minutes long, it definitely justifies it. Love it.

Tracks nine and ten pretty much represent the perfect way to end a CD such as this. Nine is great, but I do think it goes on for a little too long. The last minute or so is excellent, especially the incrasingly frantic stabbing at the guitar, but I think it should have happened a few minutes earlier. Ten, though, is just amazing. The gradual disharmonic build-up gives way to a frantic, almost acid-induced jam session style piece of music which I find really quite satisfying. I do like the bizarre shouting at the end as well. Reminds me of Shatner's version of Mr. Tambourine Man when it first came on. Although that maybe because I listened to it just before your CD the first time I heard it and I find it funny.

In conclusion, I really enjoyed your CD (and although I find myself typing that each month, it is, in fact, totally true) and it was very refreshing to be treated to something in which I wasn't immediately aware of all of the artists involved. In fact, I'm really looking forward to the tracklist, which I hope you post soon, in order to alleviate my curiosity. I'm also pleasantly surprised you didn't send me hip-hop, though I would have loved that all the same, and I'm genuinly surprised that you have obviously spent quite a lot of your music-listening life in the prescence of music such as that demonstrated on my CD. Again, I'd love to know the artists involved, so get the tracklist up ASAP, and finally thanks for letting me listen to your choices.

Wow, thanks for the feedback David! I wasn't sure if you'd like it all, and it all changed from my original idea (which was much more poppy) so I'm glad you enjoyed it. I like far too much music for my own good really, I sometimes wish I had narrower tastes as it's impossible to keep up with everything I want to hear/see.

Due to getting a new computer, I seem to have misplaced the tracklist but from the depths of my memory and from your comments I'm pretty sure it's this:

01. The Microphones - I Want Wind To Blow

02.

03. Panda Bear - Bros (Album Version)

04. Shapes And Sizes - Alone/Alive

05. Yo La Tengo - The Room Got Heavy

06.

07. Holy Fuck - Safari

08. Can - Vitamin C (Eli Re-Edit)

09. Wilco - Spiders (Kidsmoke)

10. Battles - Rainbow

I've linked up to some legal MP3s and Youtube videos where I've found them.

Track two is similarly attention grabbing. The lovely breakdown with the guitars is excellent, and the the vocals seem oddly familiar, but I can't place them. The moment the drums come in just after the three minute mark makes me smile.

I wasn't sure about starting off with the Microphones, as it begins very subdued but it soon builds up - I especially like the pulse-like drumming throughout. It does get quite discordant near the end, like you say. I didn't realise it ends so suddenly, the album it's from (The Glow Pt 2) is all sequenced together without any gaps - I've only discovered it recently but it's a mighty piece of work. The Grizzly Bear track is all about the second half to me, just lovely life-affirming music.

The little breakdowns mid-way through the song are so reminiscent of BSS.

Quite a few people don't like the extra few minutes on Bros which suprises me as it's my favourite part of the song, goosebumps everytime I hear it. The Youtube video is a slightly edited down version which might me more to your liking. I'd really recommend listening to it through headphones, the production is incredible - like a 21st Century Brian Wilson with loads of effects and found sounds. It almost encourages complete immersion in the song, again "Person Pitch" the album this is from is great - one of the best of 2007 so far.

I got sent the Shapes and Sizes track by a promotion company a little while ago and just really dig it, I haven't heard much BSS so can't really compare personally - do you have any recommendations? I got sent another MP3 by S&S too which is pretty good - Head Movin' - beyond that I don't know much about them I'm afraid.

Well, maybe not, but they are pretty strange and wonderful. The sheer pace of track seven is a sound to behold. I am very interested in knowing who this is.

I changed these tracks around a bit but I think I've got them right. I originally had Pass the Hatchet by YLT, but thought another 10min+ track would be a little too much. Yo La Tengo are great; just incredibly accomplished at everything they do - their new record seems to be a completely different style of music on each track, all working out perfectly.

Be sure to watch the video for the Liars track, it's as mental as the music. Real stompathon with a great fucked-up riff.

Track 7 is Safari from Holy Fuck. I saw them live last year, nobody in the room knew who they were and they blew everyone away - genuinely one of the best live bands I've ever seen. Quite a lot of their set is just them jamming with broken/self-modified electronic equipment, they rock like crazy. This track is from their recent self-titled EP which is probably their best material to date.

Love it.

One of my favourite songs, Eli's edit improves it for me extending several of the breaks. You really need to check out some Can if you haven't heard them before - any of their first 5 albums are worth getting but I'd probably start with Tago Mago - a little avant-garde in places but the opening four tracks are incredible - Oh Yeah .

The Wilco track seemed to follow on quite well as it's got a massive Krautrock influence to it, it is a little too long though maybe like you say - again, another song that sounds great on headphones. The final track is from the superb new Battles album (you can stream it all at their Myspace page if you haven't heard it), I had trouble deciding on which track to use - I chose Rainbow as the breakdown from about 4.45 where it sounds like it's been recorded in an underwater cathedral and then builds back up is just wonderful. I can kinda see where you're coming from with the Shatner comparison too :D

Apologies for rambling on a bit, I really enjoyed putting it all together and am glad that you liked it :D If you want any more info/sample tracks on anything or whatever let me know.

My mystery sender, I'll try and get some feedback up tomorrow on your CD.

got mine today, got home and was in the mood for new music so slung it in...

on my first listen:

Track One

Bit of a chilled out track this, a slow builder. 2:20 in and still nothing really but to be fair it's quite calming. Overall it's quite nice, it needs to build to something though maybe a soft beat, however i always like my intro's to be like this so i'm happy! And usually with a track like this it leaves me thinking 'It could be a few minutes shorter' i don't feel like that with this one.

Track Two

Not my sort of thing at all... too 'electronic' if thats the right word. I have time for dance music but not the sort that gets dragged out too much.

Track Three

not much change here, but this seems to be going somewhere, Has alot more direction and flow than the last track and i'm tapping away feeling pleased!

Track Four

This is more like it, a harder beat, more teasing sound, yeah i like this one, definitely the best on the album so far

Track Five

Found this one boring. Nothing to see here!

Track Six

Found this too dull also. It needs to build to something. I like dancing to music, and i like dancing to dance music, but this stuff just makes me want to lay down with my eyes closed.

Track Seven

Slightly more upbeat, mixed in with track 6 but not enough to to really do it for me.

Track Eight

I know this one. Not sure from what, an advert i think. Yeah i dig it, it's dark and thank fuck for guitars

Track Nine

wow 15 minutes... well it has started very well... digging this. Vocals are lovely, and a nice bumpy feel to it. A good end to an OK album.

To be honest it's hard to say too much about this as this isn't really my sort of music. But i doubt i'll listen to the full CD again (I know just the man who will love this though so it wont go to waste) But the tracks that i did like 1, 4, 8, 9... will be going on my MP3 player. The others were just a bit too low key for me and didn't really hit home. All in all though i'll give it a 5/10 Not a bad score considering i only hear one real guitar all album

Feedback for noob:

1&2. Really nice musical box intro which flows nicely into the french song. A great set-up that make me instantly know I might quite like this. The flow of the CD throughout was pretty impeccable.

3. Alrightish. The female vocal grates a little but the backing is tres-nice.

4. A very Bowie-esq vocal but it can't be him. It sounds a little Suede actually. After a few listens I like this a lot.

5. Mark Ronson - Stop Me (Ft. Daniel Merriweather)

I'm pretty dissapointed in 'Version' really. I expected better covers because some of them are quite awful. I'm sure hes done well out of it though so... I liked all the Merriweather tracks on Ronsons first alb so its no suprise I like this too.

6. This is really really lovely. I don't normally dig the slower tracks people send but the gentle horns and glitchy background work really well with the airy female vocals. Sounds like something Herbert might do.

7. Very electro-pop, Tiga-esq, moody snyths. Mmmm.

8. Juliet - Avalon

I finally bought the album this week after having it on my computer for ages. It's very good. Also, you managed to slot this into a Mix CD perfectly which I never managed. Kudos.

9. I really liked this. Has a bit of a fairytale vibe at the start to it, transforms into a trip-hop instrumental and then later the indian-sounding drums come in.

10. Another track with a great electro backing. Somewhat so-so vocals again.

11 & 12. Richard X - Finest Dreams (Ft. Kelis) & something Sugababes related (I think!)

Felt a bit trying these, in that, they seem like tracks that people would put to please me. I'm not overly fond of either, they lack that little something, but still alright non-the-less.

13. Erm, yeah

I got a bit paranoid on how much my sender understood certain elements of my musical tastes. Top stuff.

Noob, I give your CD 8/10, my favourite tracks being four, six, seven and nine.

Hey Zok, Im far too hungover to do a proper review so I'll just sum it all up in one. Loved the cd, there wasnt anything I didnt like at all. I especially liked "spiritualised" (sp) or whatever it called. me bloke gets out the bath stands on landing bollock naked and tells me its spiritualised for an electric soul OR something like that. The he goes back in the bathroom. Weirdo. But yeah the whole cd was cracking I love a bit of hairspray rock. The whole radio show thing was ace! I'd like a tracklisting please  Thankies

Yes, I took the opportunity of re-imagining DJ Lazlow's radio show from GTA Vice City...I'm definitely one for a bit of hairspray rock myself! Some good old geetar music in there too. Not the style of cd I'd normally put together, but it's still on heavy rotation in my ipod, especially Def Leppard and Diamond Dave! Anyway, here you go...

01 - DJ Lazlow - Intro

02 - Def Leppard - Don't Believe A Word

03 - David Lee Roth - Yankee Rose

04 - Prince - Bambi

05 - Zombina And The Skeletones - Nobody Likes You (When You're Dead)

06 - Ozzy Osbourne - Bark At The Moon

07 - Jethro Tull - Locomotive Breath

08 - Funkadelic - Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock

09 - Spiritualized - Electricity

10 - Toni Basil - Thief On The Loose

11 - DJ Lazlow - Halftime

12 - Van Halen - Why Can't This Be Love

13 - Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O Mine

14 - Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way

15 - Electric Light Orchestra - Turn To Stone

16 - Steely Dan - Reelin' In The Years

17 - Ruth Copeland - Your Love Has Been So Good To Me

18 - Anthrax - Madhouse

19 - DJ Lazlow - Outro

Yeah sorry Dave. Apologies...

Chris Rea - The Road To Hell (Part 1)

Chris Rea - The Road To Hell (Part 2)

Great way to start a disc, nice intro and then it kicks in and you're off. I like the tune anyway so good news. We were driving to mall-based shopping so it was perfect.

Fleetwood Mac - The Chain

Vintage class from the Mac. I put my foot down when this came on.

INXS - Need You Tonight

Another class tune, love the percussion and the general swagger to this. It always reminds me of when Kylie started dating Michael Hutchence and turned from a girl-next-door into a sexed-up minx. Nice.

Frankie Valli - Beggin' (Pilooski Edit)

Nice breaks and I knew the vocal. A bit too long though maybe.

Johnny Kidd & The Pirates - Shakin' All Over

Was this used in a film? Don't think I've heard the original before, nice guitar sound and groove.

Graham Coxon - Just Be Mine

Didn't know this, quite liked it though. Carries on the groove. Might check out some of his stuff.

Pink Floyd - High Hopes

Didn't know this either but we guessed it was Floyd! Bit slow for driving though.

Alan Parsons Project - Sirius/Eye In The Sky

Sounded familiar but didn't know it.

Black Cab - 1970

Bit twiddly on the guitar solos...

Overall

I liked this disc - at least the first 8 tracks. I felt that it was building towards a funky chuggy eclectic climax but instead it kinda mellowed into prog rock towards the end. I've listened to it again though and it improvs with repeated listens. Best tune? INXS. Worth investigating? Coxon. Worst tune? Probably the Floyd.

Summary? Strong start and builds into a nice groove and then fades away...not a criticism though, I enjoyed it. Thanks for the disc and worth noting its Mrs Farley's favourite so far - whatever that means!

Apologies for the delay in feedback.

Edit: added bold for clarity...

Thanks for the feedback, dude.

I'm glad you enjoyed it - it was actually one of my favourite ones I've ever put together.

You're right about the INXS tune; it's classic, but you've never heard of the Alan Parsons track? Oh man. You seriously need to check that album out.
