Entirely up to you, but I think most people save the tracklist until the recipient has reviewed, to make it a bit of a surprise. I always put who my cd is from, many others don't.

Ooh - Very happy with my recipient. Already spicied up the tracklisting I put together a bit (tis a bit more adventurous now) and should be going out tommorow (if I can finish deliberating over one track).

Mine's going to be late in the month, I fear: I've just scrapped a mix I'd been working on since last month (just wouldn't bloody work, would it ;)), so am having to start from scratch - and considering I've a minimum of 5000 words to write for next Wednesday, it's unlikely it'll be ready until some point after then.

Sorry recipient!

It was an exciting morning in the house of the bear today, as the postman woke me with gifts of music, film and game from the magical land of the internet. The cd shaped package was the first to be opened and the disc was popped into the stereo, accompanied by a nice cup of tea and some chocolate digestives. My excitement quickly waned however, as I realised that my mystery sender had seen fit to include 11 tracks of inoffensive, yet entirely mediocre guitar pop/rock. Hopes were slightly raised at track 10 when a drum machine entered the fray, but it was in vein. The bear understands that everyone’s tastes are different, and this is a good thing; but he just doesn't see what people like in this sort of thing. A tracklisting would still be appreciated and should somebody think it looks good, I shall forward the cd to them personally so it meets more appreciative ears. Sorry to sound rather negative but I’d rather have a cd of music I hate that this bland indifference. I am expecting a similar response from my recipient in the near future.

but he just doesn't see what people like in this sort of thing

ok... so i understand you didn't like it and thats all cool. IMO the music is FAR from bland, and as for the comment above, here is the track listings along with reasons why i love the song

1 The Ballad of Pure Thought- Millionaire

A stunning peace of work. It is quite literally beauty in a bottle. It's very low key though, nothing that will grab your attention, but it's one of the most soothing beautifully written and put together song. The only downer i have on this is the electric guitar could have been captured a little better.

2 I Wanna Make It Wit Chu- The Desert Sessions

This is a swagger song, with hint of the blues. It is a song to fuck to. It trudges along with splashes of cool without trying too hard.

3 The Bronze- Queens Of The Stone Age

Bland? BLAND?! This is song opens with a few cords to tease you into an explosion of sound. Some of the best guitar solos, heavey drumming and passionate lyrics makes me want to get up and smash the fuck out of every guitar in the room. The only weak spot with this is that Josh's singing doesn't really fit in. I need to listen to this every day to just remind me how fucking good music can be!

4 Blood From A Stone- The Mutts

An unkown band that produced their first real album last year, and its got more balls than most of the vets out there. Not the best song on the CD but good solid hard rock.

5 Stungun- Earthlings?

Earthlings are VERY hit and miss but this one works very well and provides a fantastic center peace linking the heavy start to the lighter end. The Chorus is a tad scrappy though, but the sound is unique.

6 The Photos on My Wall- The Good Shoes

The good shoes are lovely, and this is possibly the most lovely song they have. The word 'Arrogant' bleeds from the chorus, and it brings you back to the early libertines days.

7 Cherry Cola- The Eagles Of Death Metal

Again bland is not the word, a fantastically uplifting and catchy. Jesse knows how to keep the kids singing and dancing. Practically every one i have played this for now sings CHERRY COLA at some point during the week

8 I Don’t Wanna Go Out- Graham Coxon

The best track from his best album. It's essentially Coxon showing off. The tune starts perfectly, and just when you get used to the song and settle down with it the anthem starts 'Do it, no don't ever make me do it... there's hostility all around. Yeah' Fuck me it takes me back to the old school punk days.

9 Hold Up- Beat Civilian

An unsigned band who i like to pimp and big up. Nothing too special but well worth a listen. They remind me of RATM if they were to just chill out a little bit more

10 An Autumn That Came Too Soon- Goon Moon

Goon Moon have a way to get inside your brain and settle down for a bit. An Autumn That Came Too Soon is perfect for that it'll hit the back of your mind. The moment i heard this song i had to rewind and listen again. It's just wonderful

11 Jennifer’s Jack- The Presidents of the United States of America

I light hearted jokey track to finish what i hoped to be an uplifting disk. It sounds like a novelty track at first but it kicks in nicely half way through.

So yeah, i'm not having a pop we are all about opinions (this thread wouldn't work if we all agreed) but i just wanted to defend some of the music i love so much. Bland to me is Travis, this is all far from Travis

Hey, this is your first mix club isn't it? I hope I don't scare you off. It's all about making a cd you love at the end of the day. Anyway, my comment may have been a little unfair. To be honest, it's more about me not really feeling this sort of music than having a problem with anybody else being into it. I'm sure there are a number of people who would recieve a cd of my favourite tracks and be equally indifferent to it. Perhaps you just caught me at a bad time though, I can't remember a week recently that I haven't heard a track that's blown me away. My main problem with this style of music is that I feel like I've heard it all before. I'll have another listen and take your annotations on board

Elmo don't worry about your CD being to someone's taste necessarily there'll always be months where your CD won't go down too well but that's all part of the fun I guess. It's good that you've included your reasoning for including each track too.

I got my CD over the weekend. I've got a funny feeling it's from MW_Jimmy because:

1. It's got 10 tracks

2. It doesn't go over 45 minutes

3. It's got a Sophie Ellis-Bextor track on

And it's bloody good from what I've listened to so far so tracklisting please!

OK; it may be against the laws of the world but I will be sending out the same one as I did last month because of the fact that I didn't get any feedback of any kind for it despite it being one of my favourite ones I've ever done. The recipient can expect it before the end of the week.

: )

Too obvious?

My fingerprints are all over this really:

01. Devil McDoom - Watching Sleazy UFOs Passing By

02. Alex Attias presents Mustang - Future Jazz (Ft. Del & Ruti Halvani)

03. Terri Walker - This Is My Time

04. Pharrell - How Does It Feel (?uestlove Mix)

05. Sa-Ra - Death Of A Star

06. Ralph Myerz & The Jack Herren Band - Casino (Zoot Woman Remix)

07. Metro Area - Wafer

08. RIP SLYME - Night Flight

09. Sylvester - Trouble In Paradise

10. Sophie Ellis-Bextor - If You Go

All tracks 2001-2007 except track 9 (1984).

This started out originally as a summer playlist but tracks 7-9 fit together really well so it morphed into a Cosmic Summer soundtrack. Might have noticed that 'Trouble In Paradise' was the focal point: irresistibly dated and a very 80's version of a futuristic sound. Ditto Sa-Ra who bring some funk to the table aswell.

Still, interested to know how you recognised the Sophie Ellis-Bextor track. It's very new, from the sampler for the new album, and she'd be mad not to release it as a single.

I sent mine on Friday, so the recipient/victim should have it by now. I received the amusingly labelled Mr. CDR the same day, so have given it some playing time over the weekend...

Firstly - there's some really nice mixing going on between some of the tracks. Full marks for the effort thats gone into putting this together. This is nothing like I would usually listen to, so it made for an interesting change. It'd make a great mix for a house party or friendly club night, and I'd quite happily have this on as background music whilst I'm reading/working.

Track 1: Electronic Disco funk - tuneful, some lovely synth around the 5min mark.

Track 2: Nice Vocoder

Track 3: Synth brass reminiscent of early FM synthesis sounds out of place against a lovely jazz piano backing

Track 4: Not keen - Casio home keyboard demo, circa 1987

Track 5: 70s Disco - like it.

Track 6: Slightly generic disco, but would be great for dancing. Nice bass.

Track 7: I really like this - catchy & bouncy, nice drums, good vocals

Track 8: Didn't really do much for me, but short and fits the theme well

Track 9: More vocoder and some good melodic synth lines, but doesn't fulfill its early promise.

Track 10: Somewhat suffers the curse of electronic music in that the first 3 minutes are great, but it then repeats for another four minutes before imoving on. That said, the last four minutes are the best bit - ambient synth sparkles over a funk bass and guitar, leading back into the reprise. Great finish.

Track 11: Downbeat drum led piece, with semi-sung lyrics/poetry set against more ambient sparkles and minimal tune. I really, really like this - it wouldn't sound out of place amongst the stuff I generally listen to.

Cheers for the positive feedback idespair. I noticed that you'd only posted about the Wildhearts or in the Metal thread in the past and so felt sure you'd hate this. I've added a few notes in with your comments below as well as the tracklist.

Track 1: Manzel - Space Funk (Remix) - 2003 Electronic Disco funk - tuneful, some lovely synth around the 5min mark.

A lovely little funk groove, I think the remix is by Kenny Dope.

Track 2: Bogdan Irkuk Aka Bulgari - All Nite Store - 2007 Nice Vocoder

This is the b-side to an amazing track I heard last month in a mix. I'm actually starting to like this more now! Sounds old and yet still fresh.

Track 3: Asso - Don't Stop - 1983 Synth brass reminiscent of early FM synthesis sounds out of place against a lovely jazz piano backing

I love the way this track is quite cheesey and yet still great. Kinda lounge style disco.

Track 4: Hiroshi Miyauchi - Passing Breeze (Original) - 1986 Not keen - Casio home keyboard demo, circa 1987

Very close with your guess, it was from the original Outrun soundtrack circa 1986. I can't get enough of this tune since playing Outrun 2 SP in the arcades a little while back. Although there are a ton of remixes and alternate versions, nothing quite topped the original in all its chip-tune glory :P

Track 5: Sylvester - Over And Over (Special 12'' Disco Mix) - 1977 70s Disco - like it.

Classic track that I've really gotten into lately. I love the variety in that funky, funky bassline.

Track 6: Shalamar - Right In The Socket - 1979 Slightly generic disco, but would be great for dancing. Nice bass.

Another disco track that caught my attention lately, from the same compilation infact. It's just a really uplifting track that makes me smile.

Track 7: Justice - D.A.N.C.E. (Eli Edit) - 2007 I really like this - catchy & bouncy, nice drums, good vocals

D.A.N.C.E. > B.E.A.T. :P

Track 8: Bugz In The Attic - Consequences - 2006 Didn't really do much for me, but short and fits the theme well

Probably the weakest track in the mix and one I feel I perhaps should have left out on repeated listens to the mix.

Track 9: Metro Area - Soft Hoop - 2002 More vocoder and some good melodic synth lines, but doesn't fulfill its early promise.

First track I ever heard from the LP and I still love it. The bass lick at 4.00 pretty much makes the tune for me.

Track 10: Vangelis - Let It Happen (Beatfanatic's Balearic Boogie Remix) - 2007 Somewhat suffers the curse of electronic music in that the first 3 minutes are great, but it then repeats for another four minutes before imoving on. That said, the last four minutes are the best bit - ambient synth sparkles over a funk bass and guitar, leading back into the reprise. Great finish.

I wasn't fussed on this initially but read about it and heard it again via a recent blog post and for some reason I thought it was excellent. Not sure it deserved 12 minutes of the mix cd but I couldn't be bothered to edit it myself. I think the length and slower tempo would make it a good end of night wind down when dancing. Not sure when the original was made but the remix is new.

Track 11: Farah - The Only One - 2007 Downbeat drum led piece, with semi-sung lyrics/poetry set against more ambient sparkles and minimal tune. I really, really like this - it wouldn't sound out of place amongst the stuff I generally listen to.

This is amazing. Vangelis was planned to be the last track but this just seemed to wrap the cd up perfectly. It's one of those tracks I can have on repeat for ages and everything around me just gets ignored while I do nothing but sit and just listen. Annoyingly, you can't buy any of her music yet. This is a dodgy 96kbps myspace rip, apologies for the sound quality but I couldn't not include it. Check out some other tracks on her page, the Law of Life remix is also great http://www.myspace.com/farahfarahmusic

Feedback for my mystery sender:

1) A nice bouncy samplerific opener! But what was the amazing bit it goes into at 4.51? I’ve no idea what that was, but I like it a lot.

2) I’m loving this too of course, continuing the Mantronix vibe through on the synths, which is very nice, and great vocals. Couldn’t be more up my street.

3) Hah, I love it! I wish this bit went on for five minutes!

4) Awesome. I’m in love with it from the first bar, especially the falling down the stairs percussion. If I have a criticism of this track, it’s that they bring the percussion in at the expense of the beats too often, it doesn’t get the chance to flow as well as it could. It reminds me of a lot of Italian house that I used to buy circa 1991.

5) I’m not struck by this to begin with, as I have an aversion for that particular style of drum pattern – it smacks too much of the sort of remixes that Weatherall , Orbit et al were doing during the same period – set remix controls to automatic and go home. It’s a pity, because I love the rest of it, it’s really nice. A version of this with no drum beat would be perfect. Around the five minute mark you get a sense of how much better it could have been.

6) I’m not feeling this at all to start with. Again, I have a problem with anything that uses a big band style drum pattern for the beats. I love the keyboards though. I’m certainly warming to it as it develops, but then they bring those crappy drums in again, which just makes it sound a bit tired. If it all sounded like it does at 2.12 I’d be all over it.

7) I really like this one, love the crazy little melody and the Knight Rider rhythm. Mmm, lovely. I’m digging them making up the lyrics as it goes on – just fantastic. It makes me think of Ten City, which is obviously a great thing.

 This is so familiar to me, I either own it or it’s the sample doodleoops that I know…how annoying! It’s really nice though. I like a lot.

9) WOOOOOOOOOOOM! Great stuff. Once again, very familiar sounds, although I can’t place it. It’s very like the end bit of Fly Like An Eagle by Steve Miller Band…a lovely end to a lovely cd.

Great stuff, a great cd with a great flow too it, and loads of interesting bits and pieces. I pronounce it a hit! Beautifully packaged, too. Probably my favourite track was number seven, but it’s all good. It’s only my nitpicking that puts me off five and six, too. Thanks a lot, track list now danke!
