Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

It's a shame Jaffe's Heartland never saw the light of day, as it actually tried to be a critical response to the Bush administration and the war in Iraq. Lord knows if it would've worked, but you can't blame the guy for trying.

What was that game going to be about?

CoD3 is actually quite good. I've been playing the PS3 version for a couple of days. At first I couldn't really see the enemy and it's hard to target but after a few levels it starts to feel pretty good. I'm getting into it.

I'd like to see older wars - Boar War, Crimean War, Napoleonic Wars, that sort of thing. Do you think they would make a Rorke's Drift battle sim? Front row - fire! Or charge of the Light Brigade. (shortest battle sim ever?) The consoles now surely have enough grunt to make these look really good?

Me too. CoD4 seems to be more to do with Battlefield than anything, a bit of an unoriginal route to go really. But heck, it'll sell loads. Zzzz.

There's a wee article here. It's not big on detail, but it was apparently about an invasion of America by China.

Damn, that sounds like it could have been interesting. I really don't see why it would be so offensive to have a war set on US soil, where you might play as the 'enemy'. In plenty of online games you can play as the other side, and Battlefield 2 already has the Armored Fury expansion where China and the Middle Eastern Coalition have invaded the US and you can be on either side. I guess Heartland would have been more political, but still! I'd play a game where the UK is invaded, it would be something different.

And CoD4 looks alright, Infinity Ward do that kind of rollercoaster WWII game well, but I wonder if they'll change the gameplay at all? The closed environment paths and constant exciting set-pieces lend themselves well to the setting of WWII I think but, if it's set in modern Iraq say, it might seem a bit cartoonish to have waves of men and every road blocked by debris except one. Like the whole thing has become more realistic visually, but if it's just the gameplay from the previous games I think a lot of people will be over that. Of course we can't tell much from the trailer so I'll wait and see.

Looks pretty good. I hope it retains all the hallmarks of the WWII games: the sound and fury of combat, one man in an army of thousands, the fighting from different soliders' perspectives, and immense set-pieces that make war look like jolly old fun. No realistic modern tactics, though; I want fifty men storming a desert fortress from the front while SAM sites blast Apaches out of the air, and machine gun towers explode in the blast of a dozen rocket launchers.

There's only two games I am interested in this year COD4 and GTA4.

I couldn't care less about Halo 3, especially since this game was announced..

Really? I love the Call of Duty series but it's very much a 'turn brain off' combat style compared to Halo. I guess if actively engaging the enemy is too much for you then I can understand why you'd be put off of Halo 3.

The trailer is pretty neat, as are the video interviews that show off a few other snippets. It does look exactly like Call of Duty with a weapon swap, I hoped they'd have tried to go a little bit further but it still looks like great fun. They're pretty lucky Bad Company isn't out this year or it would have made their awesome car damage system look like crap.

Infinity Ward + Modern setting + Silky smooth framrate and top notch animation = GOTY (maybe)

It really does look unbelievable though, cant wait for this one!

I am sorry but isn't this like the classic CoD series in terms of gameplay, I mean, the same old stuff? Aren't you a bit bored by this kind of action by now? -_-

Why should it get GOTY? :)

I've finished all the COD's so far and do enjoy them but the overly obvious triggers in the game get on my nerves, i think it's a bit daft that a little shed can have infinite amount of enemies spawning out of it right up until you walk to a nearby hay bale or something. It just loses the realism at times, i much prefer games that don't have such obvious spawn points. Also there is obviously a finite amount of enemies in given places in real war and i find it better to be able to actually circle a building and clear out the bad guys or there be an actual point when the enemy squad or what have you would all be killed.

Still good fun though but flawed for this reason IMHO

SO much more excited about CoD4 than Halo 3. I do think it's a shame it's modern warfare, though. WWII is where it is at.

World War II games have had their time, in my opinion. We've seen a couple of really good ones, but it's time to move to a different theme. For me this is a mix of CoD2 with Vegas and GRAW, and like you, I can't wait for this. Especially since Infinity Ward are on it.

Halo 3 seems puny compared to this.

Yeah I mean if we compare the massive amount that's known about Halo 3s single player to this little walkthrough it's clear that CoD is going to be the game of the year! There at the different ends of the FPS spectrum, Halo is more of a tactical shooter where you've got to think about how you engage the enemy and CoD is more a simple roller coaster ride, a scripted duck hunt with fancy graphics if you will.
