Well that's that done, and it was one of the most intense single player campaigns I've played in years. Should my second play be on hardened, or should I just go straight for veteran? I've heard the latter is hard as nails.

Hardened, but better still, get on-line. That's where the game truly shines.

Oh god, the tv station.....that has to be the worst chokepoint in all of Veteran.

Aye, it's all about mp though....speaking of which, I've recently gotten the appreciation for Hardcore. I've been playing hardcore headquarters a lot in particular, and whether or not you get along with the easy kills, it's certainly a good way to learn the maps and improve reflexes. Good training for MW2.

It's definitely upping my game.

TV STATION: DONE.

Took me about thirty attempts until I I decided to make a run for it, flashbanged some dudes and then got stuck in a dead end. I think that stopped the spawning or something because after that I just shot a few guys that wandered down the corridor looking for me and it was job done.

Are these infinite spawning goons gonna be in MW2? They're the only part of the game that are pissing me off.

I read somewhere that theres no spawning; instead theres a finite ammount of baddies, and they react individually. Like in Halo 2.

I'll confirm that, at least for Veteran.

I remember making countless attempts to move around the left flank and get to the far end of the room, that's usually enough to trigger your guys to move up. Not so on vet - no trigger. Either that or the required amount of enemies killed is much higher.

Playing online the other day, I lucked into something that I'm going to christen The Circle of Ownage.

Basically, I was playing Backlot and quickly got up to five kills. Dropped an airstrike and got two more - good to go with a chopper. Just about to launch a chopper when I got killed. So I respawn and then launch my chopper - before I know it I'm back up to five kills and dropping an airstrike. Boom another chopper. Only I get killed again. Queue respawn and then launching chopper, and being back up to airstrike level kills...

I ended up with about 31 kills and 3 deaths. Good times.

I read that technique on a FAQ a while ago, basically get to seven kills and then get killed, rinse repeat. I sometimes sort of do it when I'm trying to beat my 28 kill streak record, I've had 28 three times now but just can't get 30 or above, argh!

In other news, I got my first gold camo yesterday :)

Veteran's not going too badly so far. Just finished Shock and Awe, which thanks to few trusty flashbangs and running like fuck didn't cause me too much bother.

Veteran's not that bad apart from the village on the hill, the stand off at the ferris wheel and the bunker at the end. You've yet to face some of the most horrific, unfair stuff. That said, when I finally beat the ferris wheel section I did so very convincingly. It is mostly the bits where you race the clock that are retarded, broken and heavily luck based.

Just started playing this online and I’m really enjoying it but I’m getting massacred every time I play. I scored 8 kills in one match and that’s my record. Any kills I get seem to come from stumbling across opponents and getting to the trigger before they do.

Does anyone have any basic strategies on lasting a bit longer in free-for-all? Are there certain characters you should play as in certain levels? Normally I just pick the regular guy with the machine gun and the pistol or the guy with the shotgun. I’ve tried the sniper but by the time I get the scope up the other guys have disappeared. And another thing, most of the guys who kill me seem to have an infra-red dot when they target me. Can I get that?

Cheers.

You might be best starting with a regular M16, as it's an excellent all-round weapon. You're probably doing what I did for ages and trying to play it like Halo. You need to change the way you think, because anytime someone has line of sight on you they can kill you. Because of this, you want to move more cautiously and use cover. Let the enemy come to you where possible, and don't forget that firing gives away your position on the radar.

Sniping is a case of camping somewhere and waiting for someone to cross your scope, so it's more a specialist role. And the laser is unlockable by killing lots of mans with any one weapon - you'll get one soon enough.

Free For All can be very frustrating for new players who don't know the maps that well. It requires you to camp more than the team modes, and every time you fire someone will come after you, so you need to know where people are likely to come from to prepare for that. I'd stick to team modes so that you can stick close to team mates and follow the flow of the match, and probably something like Domination while finding your feet with it, which is a good mode for learning the maps and isn't so focused on getting kills so you can worry less about that.

You unlock the red dot sights and such by getting 25 kills for the particular weapon, but you need to get to level 4 I think first.

I would recommend not playing on FFA. Try team deathmatch or domination etc where you have teammates to support you and follow them around mopping up hurt enemies. As said let the enemies move to you, and get used to watching where people will be and use cooked grenades to hit them instead of rushing in. Use the UAV/radar to watch where your team does and doesn't have covered, so you can relax a bit and watch for people behind you. If you try to enter fights from an angle rather than straight on it can help.

Stick with just the M16 or MP5 - M16 is great for long and medium ranges, and still ok for close if you fire from the hip. MP5 is good for close spray fire and a bit of medium range. Skilled snipers can do well on any map but generally the M16 can do the same and more, and sniping is best left to big maps like Bog and Overgrown.

Not sure what rank you are, but you'll unlock the class customisation soon and if you get 25 kills with the M16/MP5 you can create classes with the Red Dot equipped on both which will help a lot. You should get the M4 and AK after a few more ranks which are good replacements for the MP5.

edit: what deerokus said. free for all is usually a paranoia death festival for me.

Thanks for the suggestions, folks. I think the reason I stick with FFA is that I don’t want to suck the fun out of team games for other people, if you know what I mean. I’ve tried some of the capture the flag team modes but I found it a bit hectic; 3 flags to capture, 3 to defend and 16 players milling about a small area made for a bit of a confusing game.

I’m not sure what level I am (Lance Corporal II, maybe) I have unlocked the create a new class option but I haven’t sat down to do it yet. Hopefully I’ll get the infra-red add-on soon.

One other thing, can you shoot down the helicopter? I ask because I was playing as the guy with the rocket-launcher last night and the chopper hovered right over my head for ages so I shot both rockets into its belly but it just flew off.

No need to worry about that man, remember you are backing up your teammates too just by sticking with them. People die all the time and there aren't exactly serious tactics that need to be followed*. If the objective games are kinda hectic then just Team Deathmatch is good to stick with. FFA is really not a fun introduction to the game IMO

*Search and Destroy can be a bit more demanding though.

Don't worry that mate, the Mercenary Team Deathmatch mode is full of people from all skill levels, you're only one in a team (Max size  so even if you're bad it won't make a difference.

It's soo much easier to get to grips with the game/maps when you have a squad a players backing you up, it's often worth just following them around and copying them if you are confused on a map.

I did the TV station bit on veteren while waiting for some mates to come online the other day and had no trouble with it. Seriously like 4 attempts.

Basically I cheated the fuck out of it. Usually on normal I did what you describe above, make my way to the offices on the left and work through them slowly to let the rest of my dudes catch up and kill enemies. However on veteren I went right and sprinted from the start to a little cupboard at the end of the room where the banks of TVs are. Inside there is just enough room to back away if you are about to die safely and then pop back to the door and let off a few shots before moving back again. Also it seemed like the enemies accuracy with grenades wasn't good enough to throw inside where I was so they always bounced off the wall outside and blew up harmlessly. I just waited in there occasionally killing some dudes then when that first lull in the fighting happens I crawled to the end of that section and sprinted the last few yards round the corner and waited for my team to kill the second wave.

As long as you get to that corner at the end safely then you've done the level as no one will come to you and there aren't anymore enemies after it that can seriously damage you.

I'm not playing anymore though. The Hill bit resulted in me running like a girl along the outer fence as fast as possible and barely surviving on normal so veteren is right out.

Thanks to the suggestions on the previous page this game totally clicked for me over the weekend. I had a couple of epic sessions and some fantastic games. I finished 2nd and 3rd in a few games and got to call in my first air-strike. It’s a great feeling tearing around the map bagging kills with a helicopter above your head watching the points pile up. It turns out FFA is a lot of fun when you know what you’re doing and you build up a few skills/weapons. I got the infra-red dot on saturday and it really opened up the game for me.

I wish I’d made the effort sooner as the COD4 MW1 servers will probably be dead by the 12th.

  • 2 weeks later...

Having completed MW2 (just on Regular) I've popped back onto CoD4. Two years ago I did Act I on Veteran but then raced through Acts II & III on Recruit just to see the levels then never went back to it. For shame.

Trotting through on Regular now (I suck at CoD), as I'm offline until 21st November when I can brave taking MW2 online...

Even after after the graphical excesses of MW2, the Ghillies in the Mist level still looks pretty darn cool.

The end section at the ferris wheel playpark I'm finding a bit of a pain in the butt, even on Regular. I know that I'd never have the skill or patience to do this on Veteran.
