What's up with Reina at the moment, is he on the way out or injured?

Even in his worst season with us, he's solid and amongst the top keepers for saves and clean sheets. He's the best keeper I've seen us have and one of the best we've ever had. As CJ said, he's had an op and been recovering. He's first choice, easily.

Hmm. Those reports about Gerrard's injury? Looks like they were right:

Liverpool FC this afternoon issued the following statement:

Steven Gerrard today began a course of antibiotic treatment for an infection related to an ongoing groin problem.

He is expected to remain in hospital for several days while the precautionary procedure is completed.

The player will then return to Melwood to continue his rehabilitation programme and is expected to be available for selection in September.

To be honest though, with our new signings and Suarez in the side, I think we'll be ok.

I think the team did better under Daglish without Gerrard. And its probably for the best as age seems to have started to catch up with him and he's becoming a bit too injury prone.

So are Liverpool just going to allow Arsenal or Man City to sign Mata then? :(

I don't see how Mata would fit in now. We've not spent £20m on Downing to just leave him on the bench.

--------Carroll

Downing--Gerrard--Suarez

------Adam---Lucas

That's leaving out Kuyt, Maxi, Meireles, Henderson etc. I still think we need another attacking player for the bench, but it'd have to be someone who wouldn't mind playing a bit-part role.

This season is all about getting back into the Champions League. We need players who'll hit the ground running, not take a year to settle (which is more likely with a player bought from another country). Add to that we need British players to fill the quota, plus would Mata want to play for a team not in Europe?

No, Downing isn't an exciting signing, and yes I'd love to see Mata at the club. But it's all about creating a winning team, not signing a bunch of exciting individuals who don't fit together (the Real Madrid/Man City approach).

Mata doesn't provide width, he always tucks in. Downing on one side and Mata on the other could work, but as a sign one as a priority I'd have gone for Downing purely as he'd provide better width and along with Adam should see good service to the likes of Carroll.

Fixed.

Shamelessly lifted from the Guardian's Classic YouTube round-up:

I'd like to think this is what made him the player he is today. If only we'd have had him Vs Sunderland and the beachball...

Tonight's team:

The Reds XI in full is: Reina, Johnson, Agger, Carragher, Robinson, Henderson, Downing, Adam, Spearing, Kuyt, Carroll. Subs: Doni, Ngog, Sama, Sterling, Flanagan, Aquilani, Shelvey, Kelly.

Close to the starting line-up against Sunderland I'd expect, depending who's still injured/absent. Could be 4-4-2, 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1. Options.

Good to see Sterling on the bench.

We've had about 17 different players (including goalkeepers) play at the back in pre-season. Doesn't help.

Once our first choice back line, including new left back, get a run we'll be ok. Of course last night's first 2 goals were conceded with 4 out of 5 of them...
