if we've got enough money hell why not sign another winger? its not like we are currently rich in that department

We've just signed two of our main targets, give it a couple of days, will ya? The main target is a left-back now anyway.

I think now we need to ship out Ngog, Poulson, Jovanavich and maybe Cole. I would have deffo shipped out Soto too but they extended his contract annoyingly.

Shelvey I'd have go out on loan too. Then sign a CB and LB as top priorities.

Shipping out Ngog would be a stupid thing to do.

Cheers Nayson. This must have been on the cards for a while, so any news on replacement(s) at Villa?

I read somewhere that they're looking to replace Downing with Juan Manuel Vargas. Isn't he a boxer?? :P

Hopefully it's just a Mata of time.

It's just a Mata of time

What's the Mata with you guys?

I'm thrilled about the Downing signing, I think he'll give the team an excellent balance, both offensively and defensively.

I'm not sure on Mata, he's obviously brilliant but he seems to play best in a central, advanced role rather than as a winger, if we're looking for another out and out wide player there might be better options.

In terms of back up yes, but I'd much rather them sign a better striker and have 3 top players up front with Kuyt as the back up

If you manage to sign another striker better than Ngog than yeah, fair enough, but I still wouldn't want to go into a prem season trying to challenge on all fronts with what would still really only be 3 strikers. Suarez isn't an out and out striker, and Ngog is a lot better than some of you seem to think he is. He's improved more and more each time he gets on the pitch, and is still young. Some players bloom later than others, and I see so much in him. All he really has to do is beef up a little bit, and get a bit more cynical with defenders.

I agree and I thought that might have come last season tbh but it didn't. It's true some people bloom late so maybe another season with him wouldn't do us any harm, I'm sure his wages aren't as big as a world class striker too so that's a plus.

I like Ngog. He got slated when he signed him for being a PSG reject, he was slated for not being a replacement for Torres and then he was slated for not being able to handle leading the line on his own.

Yet he still contributed a decent number of goals, his hold up play improved greatly over the last two years to the extent he was better than Torres and other than last season's collapse due to being overplayed, he's quite reliable and can quite easily be a 1 in 3 player.

He's never moaned or shirked and quite frankly I don't know what people want from a young lad who we got for £1.5m and is happy to learn.

Those fans who don't think Downing is good signing are fools. He is superb footballer, experienced, definitely of international quality, scores goals, excellent crosser, can play either side (look at his goal against Blackburn lady season) and he will almost certainly be calming influence of the pitch on Andy Carroll.

I'll maintain, as I've said before, that I think he'll add more value than Young - who's more lightweight and can go missing in games.

I think Downing will be a really good signing - a natural left-footer with proven quality in the Premier League. Are there people that really don't think he'll be good for the club?

Try his thread on RAWK. Most are behind the signing, but there are a few moaning about how average and dull and boring and 'OMG 20m?!!! WTF' he is. One whinge bemoaned the fact other clubs are signing Nasri and Sneijder (despite the fact neither has yet moved), spectacularly overlooking the need to buy players that best fit into your team's system, not just because they're good players.

And overlooking the fact we are in the middle of 2 seasons without Champions League Football.

and the fact that Downing is arguably a better player than Nasri. At least Downing has been consistently good over the past few years whilst Nasri had a couple of 'meh' seasons and came good for 6 months last season and is using that to fish for a big money move. Off topic but i wish Arsenal would just tell him to piss off

Nah, Nasri is really good. Totally different player to Downing though, and I feel Downing is more the sort of player we need.

Johnson

Carra

Kelly

Flanagan

Henderson

Adam

Spearing

Downing

Carroll

Gerrard

We could actually put out a pretty decent all British side!

Slightly OT, but when I used to play a lot of Championship Manager/Football Manager I viewed our high-value (RL) transfers with a bit more disdain (OMG! They can't pay that, they'll be skint!), but nowdays I don't care how much money players cost and I just enjoying us buying people :D

And now Downing is finally official.

Sounds like we won't be bringing in too many more. I predict just the one:

Is there still work to be done, though?

It's difficult to say. I'm sure there will be players going out because some players would like to play more and have more minutes. We will probably have a few loans as well, players who we would like them to develop, into the Championship or the leagues abroad. In terms of players coming in, it's difficult to say. I think we are going to sit down, look at the situation, see where we are, see who might leave and then we will reassess later. But we have done most of what we wanted to do.

Until we ship put a few more midfeilders we have too many at the moment.

Gerrard, Cole, Spearing, Henderson, Downing, Poulson, Maxi, Meireles, Adam, Shelvey, Jovanavich, Kuyt (most of the time). Anyone else I'm missing. At least 3 of those have to go.

A LB and CB should be the priority
