Goals conceded down to errors or just general rustiness?

Everyone was rusty, which is why it looked so promising because even while we definitely looked like it was the first day of school there were some lovely passes and moves happening.

Flanagan misplaced a pass, Carragher went mental, Kelly, Wilson and Gulacsi all tried to calm him down, and he hospitalised all 4 of them.

Carragher does max his Ultra bar quicker than most.

That's encouraging. If fringe players can pass and move, that stands us in good stead once suspensions and injuries deplete our squad.

Everyone that's ever played a football match can pass and move. The problem is the philosophy seems to get trained out of players at the majority of clubs. It sounds wrong, but it's not some leap forward into footballing genius, it's just a return to basics that Dalglish has brought back into the team. If you do it enough in training and in games, it becomes habitual, and then when you play a team that is as organised and disciplined as Barca are off the ball (stock example, I know), and you still manage it, that's when it's recognised as the true genius it is.

I think Liverpool are going be playing some sexy football this year, if you manage to get 1 or 2 more signings in.

You should blatantly let us have Sterling back for a season's loan, by the way.

Well the signs over the last six months are encouraging, we just need a bit more consistency. We (as a club) are fortunate that our foundation is built on such a philosophy, and although the real test comes once the season proper starts, it is still exciting to see what we were built on once again being utilised since Dalglish took over and both established and junior players taking to it with apparent ease.

Sterling really is a little bit special, isn't he? Would love to see him make a few senior appearances, along with Conor Coady, during the season proper. To use another simple football philosophy: if you're good enough, you're old enough, and these two are both looking like very tidy prospects. So even though you can't have him back, hope QPR have a successful return to the top flight.

The word is they're after N'Zogbia, should be a good signing for them.

So will this be it in terms of attackers? Will we just concentrate on left/centre back now?

Nah - let the speculation continue! What a great summer :D Such a contrast to the last few.

Sterling needs to stay the fuck away from our first team before the idiots moan because he's not beating 4 players and smashing it in from 20 yards. He's undoubtedly talented and loves football, just needs proper nurturing. I'd argue he should stay in the reserves for a year before maybe going on loan the season after. Let the next crop develop an understanding with each other.

I think we're still in for a couple more signings, definitely a left back. I'm excited :)

:(

You're getting some decent fees at least, now we can fucking afford to pay you market rates for your players. I know a lot of Liverpool fans aren't happy with us going for a unsexy name like Downing but he'll bring consistency and assists to our side, something we've sorely lacked for years. Should also bring the best out of Carroll and Dirk.

Don't suppose we could interest you in Joe Cole?

Sorry. That's just too mean, isn't it.

Those fans who don't think Downing is good signing are fools. He is superb footballer, experienced, definitely of international quality, scores goals, excellent crosser, can play either side (look at his goal against Blackburn lady season) and he will almost certainly be calming influence of the pitch on Andy Carroll.

I'm glad this deal is done. I've no idea how Villa will recover to be honest, I'm sure they don't deserve to lose two decent wingers and have McLeish watch over them. Downing is decent, not injuy-prone, a winger, established, consistent, voted the fans' player of last season...these are definite qualities. He's never going to be best player ever, but if he contributes to a great team I couldn't care less. We should buy all* the left-footers.

* except Ashley Cole, he can piss off.

Agreed. Consistent player with no real weaknesses. Unspectacular, but delivers goals and assists, and puts a shift in. Proper team player as well.

A real loss for us.

As a boro fan, happy to see Downing move to a big club, I would be even happier if we get a part of the 20m you paid for him!? I imagine with him coming through our academy we would have something in place for if he was sold on... I think 20M isnt to far above what he is worth, probably about 16, but the 20M just shows how important he was for Villa last season.

I always thought he was great for Boro, he looked great at Villa last season and should make a fine addition down the left flank for you boys, 30 assists for Downing, 30 headed goals for Carroll? Yes!

I think Downing will come good, as will Henderson. I don't think they're worth £20m each but we can't complain if our targets have 3/4 years left on their contract.

Our net spend since the takeover hasn't been too bad either. Some good business in their tbh.

IN

£22.8m - Suarez

£35m - Carroll

£20m - Henderson

£7m - Adam

Total - £84.80m

OUT

£50m - Torres

£8m - Babel

£1.5m - Konchesky

Total £59.5m

Net Spend - £25.3m (£45.3 if you include Downing then plis whatever Doni is)

I think now we need to ship out Ngog, Poulson, Jovanavich and maybe Cole. I would have deffo shipped out Soto too but they extended his contract annoyingly.

Shelvey I'd have go out on loan too. Then sign a CB and LB as top priorities.
