Sunday morning papers (*cough* Mail *cough*) are reporting that we have hijacked United's bid for Phil Jones in the last minute. Apparently we have upped our bid to £22m and Blackburn are now refusing to finalise the transfer to United unless United match it. If this is true where the hell have we got all this cash from? i feel we are being run by Arab oil billionaires. i wish it was true just being able to piss off Fergie is always a happy moment athough £22m could certainly be put to better use elsewhere

John Henry does this, look at his American sports deals. They spend big when they have to, which is a huge fucking breath of fresh air from the days of Moores and Parry, let alone Statler and Waldorf.

I don't think Blackburn have a case here. They put the clause in the contract and agreed to let Jones talk to United. He's now agreed to join them and the dispute is apparently about how United knew about the clause. Liverpool offering more money doesn't make a difference at this stage. I imagine it's just the owners being a bit miffed that the fee is lower than the 4 or 5 clubs after him would have paid, if they'd been fighting over him without the clause.

They can be miffed all they want, they set the value. Just after Christmas it was apparently half the value and it was re-negotiated, along with an increase in his wages and an extension to the contract. This was done by the new owners so they can't blame the past, they could have set it higher or scrapped it altogether. Then again maybe the player wouldn't have extended his contract had he not been offered the buyout clause.

How did United know? I guess the same way Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs did who all bid the same 16 million- by the players agent briefing the media. There where stories in the papers and online prior to any bids about the contract clause and it being 16, what was it pure pot luck that everybody offered the same. I'd also bet that the agent has showed the contract to the potential buyers and their lawyers so they'll know full well what the clause does and doesn't say.

Edit- click me and me for the first link in Google about the clause dated the 7th, earliest I can see about bids for the player being the 8th.

As for Liverpool increasing their bid, I fail to understand what they think they'll achieve. The player has turned them down once and agreed to sign for United. I'd of thought them offering the player more money would be more productive than pointlessly offering Blackburn more.

The owners of Blackburn are just chumps, pretty idiotic truth be told. Somehow I can't see future players of theirs being quite so happy to extend contracts knowing the owners will fuck around and try and welch out of it. Still, they're buying Ronaldinho so everybody will want to stay to be his team mate. The Venky dudes should look at Wigan and Whelan for how it's done, he keeps his players for some time but also keeps his word when a move that'll be a genuine step up for the player arrives.

why are the owner's chumps when they only want to get the market value for a player under contract to them... there is a clause that he can talk to any club offering a minimum of £16million, that doesn't mean they have to sell him for the minimum though

and how are they welching out of their contract with Jones? Have they not allowed the player and his representatives to talk to Utd about a move once Utd put a bid in matching the minimum clause?

edit number 2!

why should any owners of any club under-sell a player due to it 'possibly' being a step up for that player? Shouldn't the owners get as much as they possibly can for any players they sell?

to round up...

1. The owners have kept their contracted obligations to the player by letting him talk to a club that offered the minimum value of his clause.

2. They shouldn't need to sell the player for the bare minimum when a bigger transfer fee has been submitted.

3. The power should be with the owner's, and they should do the best for their club and their fans rather than try to appease 'bigger' clubs.

I applaud the Blackburn owners stance on this matter

They're welching on his contract by not allowing him to leave despite a club meeting his release fee, they've already accepted the £16m bid. If that is indeed what's happening and it isn't the Daily Mail making up bollocks. Which it probably is.

they are allowing him to leave, just not for the minimum amount of his clause. the £16.5million bid allowed any team to talk to the player about a move, and with a number of teams matching this bid then the owners could expect to sell the player for more.

Utd have upped their bid by £4million, which is still below the bid LFC made and yet this has been accepted by the owners of Blackburn. They have held out for a higher fee and the player looks to be joining the team he wants....

According to the Times today his release clause was £16.5million but the buying club would also have to agree to a set of seemingly easily attainable success related add-ons totalling another £4million so maybe thats where this talk of United re-upping their bid has come from?

Word is today that LFC are ready to announce the signing of Charlie Adam.

Another rumour is that they've lodged a £23m for Hazard!

Would welcome the Adam signing. Tidy player with good passing range. Also can deliver a set-piece so we might see some of our corners beat the first man for the first time in years.

Not seen too much of Hazard but another exciting prospect, no?

This is a mad mad summer of speculation already! We seem to be linked with everyone, and have made bids on everyone as well!

A left back, one or two wide men and a second striker (If Ngog goes) would be my preferred options this summer. Then maybe a defender in the January window. At this moment in time with the amount of centre midfielders we have and are apparently interested in, it looks like we will be playing 4-4-2 with some midfielders pushed out to the left and right - not ideal.

I heard Bobby Gould the other day say that he reckons Henderson's future lies as a right midfielder. Hmmmm.

We'll not get him unfortunately.

I've saw him play and I have to say he's worth the hype. I've no idea why Barcelona aren't breaking down the door for him. He'd be excellent in their front three.

Or, it's just clueless people prattling on with no knowledge of what's actually going on. You know, like every transfer window.

Like Steve Kean?

Was he interviewed yesterday? Did he post in this thread?

The people earlier in the thread certainly had no idea about the add-on's they just wanted to believe that United were really desperate to beat Liverpool in signing the player and so panicked and bid a further £4m.

A bit like you when you were commenting in here about the Suarez deal, then.

On your bike.

Why does this have to descend into abuse? Is that all your kind are capable of?

People speculating about figures and such, and what club a player prefers over another...it's all subjective. People cherry pick the bits that make their club seem important, and it's not limited to Liverpool as every set of supporters does it, but Liverpool are easily the most delusional and reactionary of the lot.

Oi, donut: you can't complain about people doing that when you do the very same thing.

I'm sorry the big sweary man offended you with his naughty words.

robintripp: Do you understand why you have a rep of -1135 or are you genuinely that fucking ignorant? Christ, you can eloquently put your opinion across, but it's almost as if you choose not to understand any context, ever. I could imagine you saying you hate hip-hop because 'they say nigger all the time'. You'd say you hated wrestling 'because it's fake'. You'd hate Pixar animations because 'cartoons are for children'. Dinobot/Disciple merely seems to type down the first thing he thinks of and hits 'reply'. You, on the other hand, take time to construct these posts which just make everything worse. I don't know if that's a talent or a curse, but you possess it.

You are the Harold Shipman of rllmuk. Do one.
