He was only there due to injuries really, called up before he was supposed to be. All the great youngsters we have will definitely supplement the squad, but I wouldn't expect them to see much action in the league, bar serious long-term injuries.

I've just come in to the thread to post the same thing. I don't have a clue how he plays, I just asked my brother and he said he was a holding midfielder in the Alonso mould. i thought we would be concentrating on wide men this summer......unless of course we have tons of money to spend.

He looks tidy playing in the center of midfield but he was pushed out wide a few times for Sunderland and was pretty ineffective so that would be the only worry, especially if you buy Adam as well. He certainly looked decent other than that though.

It would be interesting to see how many of the chances he created (regarding an earlier post) where when Bent was there though.

I'm finding it very hard to see how we can fit both Henderson and Adam in the team on top of the other central midfielders we're keeping (Gerrard, Lucas, Meireles, Spearing). I hope Meireles isn't going to be out wide all the time again because he's so much less effective there. Maybe Gerrard'll end up on the right - I still think he's more effective there and probably his best season was spent out there, from what I remember.

Edit: bloody hell, my list wasn't even complete: Shelvey for a start, and that's even assuming Aquilani doesn't end up returning and that we drop Poulsen in a convenient incinerator.

If we can nab Connor Wickham and Charlie Adam that's a good start, with perhaps a couple of proper wide players added into the mix too.

Pretty sure I read somewhere that Jones has a clause in his contract that he can go for £16m. Hence why Arsenal and Liverpool had bids accepted apparently.

It's not as if we're going to be able to play them all properly in the middle either. If we play five across the middle of the park (presumably Kuyt, Gerrard, Miereles/Lucas, Henderson, Maxi) then that leaves us having to choose between Carroll and Suarez up front rather than playing them both. A bit of a confusing situation - can only imagine Kenny is building a squad where each player has at least one quality back-up.

Think Young's off the list now as pretty much everywhere has him pegged for United. That leaves us with N'Zogbia, Downing and Mata who we've been linked with, although having watched him on telly over the last few years Mata has struck me as a player who prefers playing in the centre of the park just off a striker.
