Does anyone here read Daglish's weekly column in the Mail on Sunday? This week's one was about him getting the Liverpool contract. Always a good read.

Agree with his views on the FA Cup

Who said the penalty decision wasn't Webbs fault? Sure it happened fast, but he's there to get big decisions right. It was shoulder to shoulder, both players challenging, and outside the box. Poor.

However I only saw it on football first (an hour) but we didn't really look as sharp as we have recently. Overall we probably didn't deserve a win but a shame that we couldn't hav me secured 5th.

Plus, of course, I'd like to see Blackpool stay up which would mean a Birmingham loss.

But hey! The future is bright and we'd have taken this 5 months ago. So a bit disappointing (especially as Spurs have been rubbish), but we can't be too down about it.

Reina from Spain stays mostly on the plains (of Anfield).

Pepe Reina convinced to stay at Liverpool by promise of investment

• Goalkeeper claims to 'believe in this club, in the project'

• Damien Comolli's promise of player arrivals sways Reina

Promises of new arrivals have convinced goalkeeper Pepe Reina to stay at Liverpool

José Reina has revealed the promise of significant investment at Liverpool this summer allayed his concerns over the direction of the club and convinced him to remain part of Kenny Dalglish's rebuilding plans.

The future of Liverpool's influential goalkeeper has been a genuine concern inside Anfield for several months, with the 28-year-old voicing reservations similar to those from Fernando Torres before his £50m departure to Chelsea.

Reina secured a £20m release clause when he renewed his Liverpool contract last summer, amid interest from Arsenal, but despite the absence of Champions League football at Anfield next season he has been hugely encouraged by the impact of Dalglish and Fenway Sports Group's decision to hand the Liverpool manager a three-year contract.

Crucial to Reina's decision to stay, however, was a conversation with Damien Comolli, in which Liverpool's director of football outlined FSG's spending plans to the Spain international.

Reina said: "Everything has changed. The situation of the club, recently I have talked with Comolli asking for the future and I believe in this club, in the project and I am happy here. My family was really desperate to stay, they are really happy here, but in December and January more or less most of the people, and not just the players, were doubting the future because we were not good enough.

"I never felt I had to leave, because I wanted to believe in the project, but the situation wasn't nice and the mood all over the place was not good. That is not the case any more and we are ready to take next step.

"That is where we have to look now, not about the past, about the future and the bright future we have in front of us." The Liverpool goalkeeper said details of his talk with Comolli would remain private but confirmed the promise of "a big summer" at Anfield had been a decisive factor.

"I believe we are in the right place and going in the right direction and we have to keep it like that. Next season will be more positive. The quicker we improve the better for the club, but you cannot change overnight. It will take a little while.

"We are optimistic, the owners are preparing a big summer and hopefully we are going to be right in the transfers we make and the players that come in will improve the squad."

Tom Werner, the Liverpool chairman, has echoed Reina's conviction that FSG intends to invest heavily this summer, with Aston Villa's £15m-rated forward Ashley Young a leading target and understood to favour a move to Anfield over Old Trafford, and the Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam expected to arrive. Liverpool tried to sign Adam in January.

"We certainly have the resources to improve the club and we're moving in the right direction," Werner said. "We are determined to improve and I know that Damien is already looking at a bunch of targets."

Reina conceded that Liverpool wasted the opportunity to secure Europa League qualification with their surprise 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday but the Spaniard has not ruled out a final‑day twist in the race for fifth place.

"We had it there, in our hands, and we messed it up," Reina said. "But we have to finish well. It will be difficult for Spurs because they have to play Birmingham who are playing to avoid relegation and the main thing is to keep fighting and to win our game against Aston Villa, which will not be easy.

"We did not play well and they deserved to win. We want to be in Europe. Liverpool is about Europe and being in every competition with a chance to win them. When the fifth position looked closer than ever, we messed it up."

So, a 'big summer' ahead. Who's everyone hoping for?

if we get Young and Adam then i'll be very happy, throw in Aguero and i'll cream my pants

The problem i guess is that Man City would be able to throw unlimited funds at any top players who become availbale even if its just to stop them going to a rival. I thought this financial fair play rule has come into force? but i hear city have another £200m to spend, how does that work?

City have a few potential ways of getting around the rules.

They're redeveloping a lot of the surrouding area of Eastlands and will increase revenue from that, stadium naming rights and possibly other businesses linked to the owners that can provide sponsorship.

Rumours of Aguero keep popping up, especially now hes asked to leave Athetico. Having him in the attacking force would be imense.

Twitter again...

And @Pault86 said when Aguero was over at Xmas with Maxi he said he fancied playing for us again.

Last eight games we're third in form (behind United and Chelsea). Had Dalglish had a full season I don't think it is unreasonable to expect we'd have challenged for a top four spot but we are still too inconsistent to expect more than that.

Of course as Kelthink suggests, Hicks and Gillett's ownership was the ultimate mitigating circumstance. Even so it is hard not to think Dalglish would have fared better than Hodgson, for one because the former has been working behind the scenes at the club, and could have counted on greater support from the get go.

As it unfolded though, it's kind of apt Dalglish's 2nd managerial reign ushered in a new era. Just having him in charge, and the uplift this has brought makes 2010 feel like a bad dream.

Dwelling on the first quarter of the season for a moment, shiiiiiit, we were in the stink.

Apologies if it's earlier in this thread, but how would you have fared if you'd had the current form under dalglish for the whole season?

Extrapolating our results (which of course is terribly scientific in sports) we'd be on somewhere between 70 and 74 points. It was 76 before the Spurs loss and I can't be arsed doing it myself so I'm guessing 70-74.

Either way that's much better than if we continued the way we did under Hodgson which would've seen us languish somewhere between 45-54 points. And not taking into account that Kenny didn't have the summer to sign and sell players.

But yeah, looking forward to next season :)

Bit of an odd final line up:

Liverpool: Reina, Flanagan, Aurelio, Skrtel, Carragher, Spearing, Lucas, Kuyt, Cole, Meireles, Suarez. Subs: Gulacsi, Robinson, Wisdom, Wilson, Poulsen, Ngog, Shelvey.

Shop window for Cole? Surprised Pacheco hasn't made the bench at least.

Probably not fit. Cole isn't a surprise given his recent last minute appearances. The rest of the line up seems normal enough although the bench is a little weak. Falanagan must be quite happy to be getting all this time in the squad, he's certainly deserved it.

No Maxi or Johnson either. Apparently Pacheco is still technically on loan, even though he's back training with us.

Carroll's absence isn't too much of a surprise. Doubt he'll be selected for England U21s now, thank god.
