It's sad the the UEFA Cup/Europa League is now seen as a nothing trophy. For many it seems to be be the Champions League or nothing these days!

That said I do think the new Europa League format is awful. If anything a return to the old UEFA an Cup Winners Cups would be better.

From the position Liverpool where in when Dalglish took over finishing fith and qualifying for the Europa League would be a stunning result. Hell if they had turned around another of couple of poor away performances that fourth Champions League spot would be in sight.

I love the fact that fifth is a "poison chalice" as soon as we reach that spot.

The extra games are only an issue if you don't have the squad to deal with it. Clubs like Liverpool or Spurs shouldn't have that problem.

Exactly. We have a deep enough squad for Europe, and also plenty of fringe players capable of playing in the competition. I hope we get in the Europa League and blood a few more of our starlets like Sterling along the way. Then when we do get back in the Champions League, those youngsters will have a decent grounding in European competition, as well as having the chance to establish themselves in the senior squad.

Loaning out players is all well and good, but I'd imagine they feel a little disenfranchised by being sent away from their parent club. Would rather see players get experience in our colours because they're not just playing football, they're playing alongside players they'll hopefully form a more permanent bond and understanding with.

Sami Hyypia retires:

What a player. Hope his coaching career works out, would love to see him back at Anfield one day.

Absolute legend of a player. Rock solid for us for almost his entire career. Enduring memory for me being that volley against Juventus in 2005.

Would love to see him in the coaching setup soon. Liverpool will probably see how he takes to it with Leverkusen and Finland then sign him up (hopefully!).

I heard that we want to be in the Europa League, because not qualifying for Europe at all will badly affect our seeding if we qualify for the CL in future seasons. I don't know if that's true.

That is a good reason, yes. UEFA Cup and CL coefficient points all count. We still have some decent points hauls in the bank. And of course we want to win shinies.

It's a winnable trophy for either side, if they had a real go at it.

I checked the requisite Wikipedia article. The seeding is done by looking at a club's league and European performances over a period of five years. It is heavily weighted towards the latter though, and obviously not qualifying at all gets you a zero score for that year. The table on that page is interesting, as it shows English clubs are very well represented at the peak of European competition, taking four of the top six places by UEFA's calculations. However in the whole of the top 25, only Spurs manage to squeeze in and make it five. Perhaps this is indicative of most English clubs not being suited to the considered, strategic and ultimately slower European game, but I think it's more likely that they just don't try when they do qualify. Apart from Fulham I can't remember a decent run in the UEFA cup by a PL team.

We lost the semi-final in the same year that Fulham made the final (2010). Middlesbrough got to the final in 2006.

Thought Arsenal got to the final, losing to Galatasaray, in 2000.

Hope is all we have.

Mental, saw the missed penalty by Charlie Adam and figured that'd be it for their changes. Minutes later...0 - 1 Blackpool :S

Obviously Spurs don't want to be in the crappy Europa cup.

ed: I'm assuming it was a missed penalty because bbc's live scores is mental. It says it's 0 - 0, Adams (pen)...err :S mintes earlier it said "missed penalty", then it updated to 0 - 1, then back to 0 - 0.
