Liverpool Football Club

Every top club has had a star player try to leave in the last season or two. The other clubs have all been able to throw enough cash / visions of success at the problem to get the star and their agent to back down.

We couldn't. Thankfully our club is reasonably convincingly on the up from a low ebb. A good half season and a good summer and we should be OK, able to convince good players to come and our best players to stay. And at least our fans are onside: imagine the mutiny when Torres left if Roy was still around.

Is Reina supposed to be relatively happy nowadays? I'd hate to lose him too.

He never looks happy. It often looks like he's thinking about ripping up small mammals with his giant gloved hands.

He was pursuaded to sign a new contract to help the sale of the club. That's probably the stupidest thing I've ever heard and I've heard some stupid things in this thread.

So I guess Liverpool is a less enticing prospect for a buyer this week than it was last week?

He's went for the money.

I don't know if that's aimed at me, but I never said anything about Torres signing a contract. I'm talking about summer 2010. Torres quite clearly didn't want to be at Liverpool after that.

Persuaded is probably the wrong word though - the club (Gilett/Hicks) could simply refuse to allow him to leave, perhaps not trusting Hodgson to spend the fee on players of equal worth. Torres was a significant asset from a marketing/merchandising point of view. Carroll, for example, is not - certainly it would be difficult to recoup that £35m any time soon. He's a gamble, or at best a long-term investment. So yeah in a way it's true that Liverpool is a less enticing prospect for a buyer this week than it was last week, but fortunately it's not for sale.

And yeah, he may have just gone for the money, but I still think it was for trophies. He seems to have a real bee in his bonnet about the Champions League.

I think Reina will have a good think at the end of the season - if we're looking like progression is being made (i.e we're in Europe and had a good 2nd half to the season) then I think he'll give it at least another season. If not, I think he'll deffo be gone (and probably to Man Utd unfortunately).

+1

Plus Fabregas could have gone a couple of times in the past 2 seasons. Wenger talked him round, reminding Fabregas that he would find him and kill him if he left. Staring into the Frenchman's serial killers eyes is like looking into hell.

Talking of Barca, I'd like to see how they'd do against Stoke/etc.

I'm hopeful for the future yet tonight I fear that we will lose to Stoke. I'm going to put some money on it to ensure we win. £10 for a 3-1 loss.

It's a known fact that Messi couldn't cut it at a cold night at the Britannia.

That was a stupid thing to say (I know you didnt say it), Messi would tear us apart. Against teams with some genuine class we get battered. If you try and play our game (hard working and physical) we'll match most teams. We wouldnt even get close to Barca, unless we played Wilkinson, who'd probably just end up going mental and crippling Messi with a rubbish tackle in frustration.

I think you'll win. You're at yours, we havent got Shawcross and I predict Suarez - unless something is wrong and he really has trouble fitting in - will cause us too many problems. Suarez should be an amazing signing for you guys, though I am glad he wont be linking up with Torres to face us. If you win I think you'll hammer us too. Prediction - either 4-0 or a 0-0 draw. For some reason I just cant see it being anything other than a white wash or a boring stalemate.

That's also a bit stupid, considering our record against big teams in Europe. Admittedly this was in Benitez times, but we were brilliant at stifling the creative teams.

I'm not sure if you are trying to say something else and I'm not getting it, but you know by "we" I mean Stoke City, which is who I support? I cant really make your sentence make sense unless you think I'm talking about Liverpool, which I would have thought the rest of my post would have made clear.

Yeah I must admit I didn't really read it. Makes more sense now!

Very interesting... any guesses on how we're lining up?

Kelly - Kyri - Skrtel - Agger

----- Lucas - Mereiles

---Johnson - Gerrard - Aurelio

-----------Kuyt

Maybe..?

Wing backs, perhaps...

Radio City are going with yours (although swapping Mereiles and Gerrard). The official site does mention Aurelio playing central midfield, so it could be wingbacks, a 3-2-3-1-1 - god knows though.

Interesting to say the least!

We've played pretty well in the first half, with a lot of the play going through Glen Johnson on the left wing. Kuyt has really grown into the lone striker role (which looks ready-made for Carroll) and there's been some really nice football. But - there haven't been that many chances and Kuyt just doesn't look sharp when in front of goal. It's a shame as he is obviously working hard but if we continue with this system I can see him being the man to miss out. Hopefully Suarez will be on for more than a cameo in the second half. All in all, definite signs of Kenny starting to stamp his mark on the team, even without any new faces as of yet.
