Skysports.com understands Liverpool also approached Manchester City for Micah Richards and were prepared to go up to £20million for the defender. City rejected the Reds' approach.

So Liverpool aren't done yet. Surprised about Richards, surely a left back would be better.

So what do you Liverpool fans really think of the Carroll deal?

Personally I think he's a decent player, but I worry that the current Newcastle side was built around him and £35m is an amazing amount of money. Unfathomable. I hope he does well for you (not that well) cos he's English, and if he reaches his potential he could be ace.

EDIT: And I must admit that I was bricking it when I thought United were after Charlie Adam

Twitter is full of ridiculous people listing players/teams and saying = Andy Carroll!

And the Villa = Carroll thing - oh so if we'd bid £34m for Villa now he'd be ours?

It's almost as if people think thy what you paid for a player when you bought him = worth now. Someone even mentioned Wallcott. Yeah he did well for 2 seasons didn't he?

I know, let's list transfers from 20-30 years ago and see how many players we can make = Andy Carroll.

Idiots

i've been raving about him for the past few years

Glad we have him as i'm a huge fan, i think with the guidence of Kenny and with players like Gerrad and Carra around him he can mature into Englands no1 striker. I always wnated him to move from newcastle as being around the likes of nolan, barton, taylor and smith must have been a bad influence.

Robbie Fowler cost us nothing....TWICE...and we pay £34m for Andy Carroll. Disgrace. ;)

I'd offer Houllier £12m and Joe Cole for Ashley Young

I think that'd hinge on Cole really. No one is likely to pay £90k a week to an out-of-sorts crock, so it depends on whether he still has ambitions to play regular football at a decent club, or whether he's gone down the Bogarde-esque route of "welp fuck it i'll just sit here and pick up my fat pay cheque for three years".

Indeed. I think its too late in the day for anything to happen now, but I have a feeling that Villa would be willing to talk. Villa fans certainly would, Ash has been great for us but he hasnt produced the swashbuckling form of his first two seasons at the club in the past 18 months or so. It's mostly because defenders have figured him out a bit, his biggest strength was playing on the left hand side as a right footed player so he could cut inside and tear teams to ribbons. It happened time and time again during 07/08 and 08/09, and Ash (rightly) made the Premier League team of the seasons those two years, he also won the PFA young player award in 08/09.

He gets shown down the line all the time now, and his crossing is hit and miss. He is a very decent corner and free kick taker and he is reliable from the penalty spot (he has a hell of a powerful shot on him for a little fella) but his ineffectiveness in his old position has been acknowledged by the Villa management, O'Neill bought Downing to play on the left so Ash could move into the middle, because of Downing's injury, James Milner ended up playing in the middle and was sensational so Ash playing just behind the striker got delayed for a few months, but Kevin MacDonald (our caretaker) and Houllier have both played Ashley Young behind the main striker this season.

I think Joe Cole is better than Ashley Young in that role, but his injury problems and high wages would be an issue for us. I dont think Joe Cole has been 100% for at least 30 months.

Joe Cole's fucked in terms of running, but if you play Bent up front, Agbonlahor and Albrighton on the wings and I don't even know who you'll play in CM any more, you've seen like two or three come in and they can all play high energy games so...Cole could just stand behind Bent spraying the ball.

He won't do that now we've changed our formation.

I think Carroll will be a brilliant buy. Yes £35m is far too much but the money is there and what are the other options? Torres is gone and you need someone in. He's big, strong, fucking immense in the air and a real pain in the ass for defences. The comparisons to Crouch is laughable.

To be honest I thought we'd probably try and sign him if he performed consistently for the season.

Agreed, but this one is kinda funny:

Torres: £50m. Carroll: £35m Szczesny; Clichy-Djourou-Vermaelen-Sagna; Fabregas-Song-Wilshere; Nasri-RVP-Walcott collectively: £44m.

Nuff said."

Not really bragging though. I wish we could have some transfer fun too. :(

Yeah that one is entirely stupid too.

Would Fabregas now be worth what he was then. Walcott? Who was shit for 2 seasons. RVP too, Mr injury. Wilshere? What's he worth now.

Utterly stupid. You couldn't buy that lot now for £35m could you. Idiotic.

Well no of course not. It's just as stupid as the others. I guess it's just been done by a gooner trying to make themselves feel better.

Well we need to cling to something. STUFF HAPPENING! Best part of our season so far, weirdly.

Well, no. Given the price of Carroll you could put a couple of zeros on the end.

Except you can't (sadly). When Fabregas goes there's only one club who will be in the running (assuming they ever find a pot to piss in), and it's not likely to be a rushed last minute affair. The circumstances have a big bearing on the price.

Arsenal don't count when it comes to transfers, they're too good at them. Wenger would be a gibbering mess at Man City, he'd probably buy 100 great players with the same cash and curl up into a ball, confused.

I heard that the real reason for this was he couldn't actually count above the number 49 - exactly the number of women he killed in Japan during his tenure there.

For every Fabregas or Vieira, there's a Jeffers or Pennant.

Well, there's not, but you know what I mean. We've had our share of duds too.

I guess the issue is that for cheaper signings this doesn't matter as much. If you get a Berbatov instead of a Veron then it's fine. Will Carroll turn out to be another Keane?
