£30m is a big bloody risk isn't it? On a player who's not proven at the top level, who's not done anything for his country, who could be a flop.

This is a very strange day.

Fascinating isnt it? Id probably be quite anxious if my club had anything worth selling, or a good chunk of their fortune to invest on a whim...

Alas, the bloos havent got two ha'pennies to rub togther. So i'll enjoy all the melodrama on ssn.

Newcastle have cancelled their press conference. I really hope that doesn't mean what the press guys on Twitter think it means.

Suarez and Carroll as your strike force? Could be awesome. Could be awful. Will be fascinating to see.

Well, it'd be more:

Kelly Carra Agger Johnson

Adam Gerrard Meireles

Suarez Carroll Kuyt

If the likely deals go ahead.

We'll save the wingers til the summer...

I'd be massively surprised if Lucas isn't involved in our first choice XI, the guy is awesome. I'm not convinced by Johnson as a left back either...

I don't get what your problem is, Carroll has a lot of quality and even more potential. Of course his fee is going to be inflated, it's January, but you don't really have a choice if you want to find a replacement for Torres and I think he could give you a lot more than Torres does, not in terms of scoring more goals but with his general link up play and rugged style.

Well, if we get Adam, we'll have 4 central midfielders to fit in somewhere (6 if you count Poulson and Spearing), so we'll probably rotate a fair bit.

It's just the massive fee, which is obviously inflated due to this stupid transfer window business. For £15m-£20m I'd snap him up.

Yup, I quite like the look of Carrol and I wouldn't mind seeing him at Liverpool.

The fee is scary though.

The problem with Carroll is he is unproven. I can understand Bent going for a lot. But Carroll has scored 9 prem goals and had half a decent season. Even with inflation that price is too much. How do we know Carroll isn't a flash in a pan? There's been quite a few strikers who come up from the championship and then had one decent season.

Exactly. People are crying about us overpaying - in January, for an English player? And the moaning about Torres! It wasn't long ago that Torres' fee would have been swallowed up by interest payments. I'd be delighted with Carroll signing. He does present a risk, and he isn't as good as Torres, but he offers certain qualities that Torres lacks. A front three of Suarez, Kuyt and Carroll would be tenacious and combative. We'd have much more physicality at our disposal, and Carroll is technically proficient. I'd be made up if we signed him, to be honest.

I think his overall play is much more encouraging than the amount of goals he's scored. He's just such a fucking nuisance for defences to cope with. It definitely is a risk, but it's great that we're in a position to take such a risk, particularly after what we've endured in recent transfer windows.

He's had 6 months of good form in the top flight. Right now, that puts him up there with Amr Zaki, Mido, Marcus Stewart and Michael Ricketts. Even Milan Baros had a purple patch in the league in 04/05 until he got injured in January.

Carroll has shown good form and great potential but already questionable mentality. It's all when and good saying he can grow out of it but he could just as equally fall by the wayside.

We do have a choice if we want to replace Torres. There are strikers in the Bundesliga, in La Liga, in Portugal, France, Italy who offer the same sort of potential that Carroll does for a fraction of the price or proven European and International pedigree for less than £35m. Hence baulking.

Andy Caroll is a good player and could turn out to be a very good one. He had a decent England debut and of course he's young. But £30m is a hell of a lot of money, I think that's what the problem is.

Well, yeah, I get it. But it's not like it's our money, is it? We've been scrimping and saving for so long, it's refreshing to be in a position where we can take a punt on someone like him. It's January, he's English, and it's the last day of the window. It's not as if Chelsea aren't overpaying for Torres. When was the last time he looked like he was worth £50m?

I don't get the moaning either, I like what Carroll brings, Suarez is here maybe Adam to join. And the best signing in January, Dalglish, is being given the funds he wants to reshape the team. I still have the broad smile from Kenny being back, this window has shown that we are moving in the right direction after a horrible period.

Today? On the last day of the transfer window? It's too late to look outside of the Premier League. You're getting £50M for Torres, is that not an inflated price? You have the money available, spend it on a young, talented and promising British player.

Why? Arsenal got Arshavin when the world was stuck in snow. Harry Redknapp regularly makes a mockery of the deadline by getting players at the last minute plus injury time. We've had a few days, just because we're hearing about official bids doesn't mean that discussions weren't started a few days ago.

Plus, the reason the Carroll news is in the media is simply because no one from LFC is talking so it'd come from Newcastle's side. Whereas if we're working with deals from abroad, who is going to talk to the UK press?

BBC Radio 5 live senior football reporter Ian Dennis has heard that Liverpool HAVE made a second offer for Newcastle striker Andy Carroll. £35m per chance?
Quote from the Guardiand Live blog..... "Just heard from my source at the Bernabeu that the pool are to put in a shock offer for Benzema, with cash + Ngog being offered," writes Alkesh Mistry.

Torres and Ngog ----> Suarez, Carroll and Benzema?

Oh, go on then...
