I keep flitting between thinking we should persuade him to stay and thinking we shouldn't have to do that so let's just try and get as much money as we can for him.

The sticking point is the replacement. Anelka isn't, and Sturridge certainly isn't. We shouldn't entertain the idea of either of them as part of the deal - £50m minimum. But who would there be available to spend that on in less than 2 days? It would be a massive PR disaster for the owners to sell Torres and not bring in a striker of the same ilk.

The timing of it all is the worst part, it would've been easier for everyone earlier in the month. Chelsea are definitely going to have to pay a premium because of it.

I just hope he realises he's never going to be appreciated as much by Chelsea fans as he has by us and Athletico. He's just going to be another expensive gift bought to placate them in order to win yet another hollow trophy [/bitter]

We don't need the money though, Graham. NESV have committed something ridiculous like $300m on two players for just one of their teams.

It's not just Tom Werner and John Henry. They're a consortium of billionaires and millionaires. I'm not saying they're the best owners in the world, they have a lot to prove in light of our previous owners but they have at least started well. If Torres thinks he stands a better chance at Chelsea, he's mistaken. He won't get anything like the patience he's had at Anfield or the adulation, if he doesn't fit into their system then he'll be out on his ear.

If he doesn't want to hang around, fine, but don't expect us to just bend over to his will.

Okay I'm over him now so let's not cry for Fernando Torres. Oh we haven't won anything while he was here? He's been patient? The poor lamb. Well, we won things when we had Milan Baros and Cisse as our strikers. We've had Fernando on form and scoring goals, we still didn't win anything. So see ya Fernando. Thanks and all. Hope you don't play for Chelsea like you do for Spain (yes I do).

I know he's had a dip of form this season (the fucker had malaria, give him a break!) but Drogba is still a better complete Premiership striker than Torres. I reckon he is a more daunting prospect to most Premiership defences than Torres. With that in mind, who would lead the line for Chelsea? I don't think Torres is really suited to playing wide as part of a three-pronged attack, and Drogba isn't ideal there either.

If we did lose Torres, I think we should reinvest the money in some great young prospects like Lukaku, Hazard, people like that. And just get a really good young team going, keeping Gerrard, Reina and a few other of the better older players around to provide guidance and a bit of grit. Start bringing Suso and Pacheco through too. Kelly could become a great player for us too. Even with Torres leaving this could be a really exciting time for us to build something for the future.

He wouldn't want to lose face to the club and fans by putting in the formal request on Jan 1 before he's sure anyone's willing to put up the big money to come in for him. Now he knows someone is willing to pay the money and he's willing to try to force the move. He probably expected it to be rejected, what transfer request aren't, but it's the biggest play he can make, bar refusing to play, to engineer the move.

What, after he's found some form, scores some goals, and is looking like he's back to what he does best?

Yep, classy.

Perhaps the best point in the thread. Its like clubs are expected to do what players want these days. For parity do not whack in a transfer request days before the transfer window closes, and on a weekend no less, and expect everything to be fine.

Sure perhaps Torres can point towards "broken promises" and that things haven't gone how he expected. Well life just sucks doesn't it Fernando?

And still sometimes things just don't happen as anyone wants them too. Does he believe the club have been through anything like they've wanted to for the last couple of years.

Yeah, yeah it's not his fault; right now it's not really the clubs. Considering a new manager and new owners, it's not theirs either.

Perhaps the fans could ask for some money back for wen Torres had a fair bit of time out injured last year. He hasn't been upto his best and it's shown. What's that it's not your fault Fernando? Yeah, see how that works?

Of course he can put in a transfer request when he wants. So long as he gives 100% when he plays he's well within his right to ask to move to a different club. Berbatov was out of order at Spurs, if the club doesn't let you move you should fulfil your contract but it isn't a problem to ask to mce

He hasn't given 100%. And quite frankly, if he's miffed about what's going on with the club, how does he think the fans feel?

Thge timing does stink. Clearly he was waiting until we failed to get Suarez before asking for a move so he could say we hadn't signed anybody. The fact we got Suarez fucked things up for him and now he looks like a turd.

The only question is will we get more for him in the summer, if so keep him until then, if not sell him now.

all the sunday papers are awash with rumours that we will be willing to accept a £50m bid

the timing just stinks, like everyone said, if we sell we are left without a proper no9, basically fucking our season when it looked like we might have been able to put in a late challenge for Europe.

At least if it happened at the beginning of the window we would have had the whole month for Daglish to find two more huge Suarez-like buys so we could have gotten in adequate replacement an someone else to bring in an extra dimension.

So when are we going to start posting pictures of us destroying our Torres no9 shirts?

Why don't we want him now? Crazy talk! Best to lock him into servitude as a lone front man chasing balls punted up to him. Never let him miss a game or ever sub him, that will tire him out for the sale at the end of the season.

Well get some goals out of him then he can go jump.

Also if he had a clause inserted for £50m in the summer - then he was up for giving it a chance.

I still maintain it's best to hang onto him, use him for goals, then he can get out.

And selling him to Chelsea; that's an admittance that were nowhere near them. True or not imagine the signal that sends out to the players, let alone the fans. It's a Hodgeson like lowering of expectations all over again.

I still expect the board to hang onto him because that's what theyve indicated they'll do.

I do love how this is all turning out.

Burn him, burn the judas!.

Youre a classy guy. Weren't you told to stop this sort of thing, are you a bit slow on the uptake?

Liverpool will sell striker Fernando Torres before the end of January - but only if Chelsea agree a £50m package, BBC Sport understands.

Another option could be a £40m deal, with a world-class replacement - namely Nicolas Anelka - returning to Anfield. Despite reports, Liverpool are not interested in bringing Chelsea's young back-up striker Daniel Sturridge to Anfield.

Pretty much what the papers are saying, but even the BBC are now confident enough to put it on their site.

I wouldn't say Anelka is world-class anymore though.
