Llorente or Lukaku would be great choices alongside a decent winger like Alexis Sanchez. I'm pretty sure Llorente was Madrid bound, but that might not happen now in the summer depending on the form of Adebayor. But they could get rid of Benzema. But if that money is put forward for a decent winger and striker then it would be decent business for Liverpool. You might not have the player who gets you the amount of goals that Torres does. But you will have more goal threat from the team if you have Gerrard, Suarez and two attacking players.

Be odd if you did replace him with Llorente, given that his full name is Fernando Llorente Torres

To be fair I'm a bit surprised with wanting to go to Chelsea. Where does he fit in the team? He won't be the focal point like he is at Liverpool. Drogba still will be. Even if they sign Torres, I can't see Roman going crazy and spending £150m. Chelsea have an ageing team and the financial fair play will hit them hard. Lampard, Terry, Drogba. Anelka ain't getting younger. But besides Man City, Chelsea is the only option. Won't go to Madrid. Barca can't afford him and so can't the Milan teams.

He's still an Atleti fan. He'll probably finish his career there, and he's already said he'd never play for Real Madrid. He's not that highly regarded in Spain, anyway. He'll stay in England.

I post on a dedicated football forum too, where there is currently a thread dedicated to the Torres affair and within that thread people are pouring over the Torres thread at RAWK. Somebody just found this little gem from a thoroughly pissed off sounding Liverpool fan:

RAWK is absolutely embarrassing when it comes to this. Some people chucked their toys out the pram because they thought FSG were doing fuck all, then suddenly we signed Suarez. Same thing happened when Hodgson was sacked, they were called every name under the sun for not acting because it was a Saturday and nothing ever happens on a Saturday then suddenly Kenny was manager.

Reynard posts an official statement saying that Torres transfer request is turned down and still people are worried he's going?

The new owners seem to be doing things right. So far they've said he's not for sale and also that they won't grant his transfer request.

So he is staying they've made that clear.

I can't speak for others but as far as I'm concerned Blackpool are within their rights to keep the player and if they ask for a fee we're not prepared to match, that's the end of it.

Adam's situation is slightly different, Blackpool realistically aren't going to win anything whereas with our new owners we have a chance of rebuilding and challenging again in the near future.

Either way, I'm sick of modern footballers.

Well, I suppose Rooney and Tevez both handed in requests...and nothing happened, so there's hope he will stay. On the flipside what would be the knock-on effect for the rest of the team? Torres can be a petulant bugger so if he stays are we going to see him sulk his way until the end of the season? Actually, that wouldn't be much of a change, would it?

Can't really say I'm surprised he wants to try his hand elsewhere after the last few seasons, but the timing is off. We've binned our previous owners, we're playing more to his strengths and we've just signed a very good player to ease his burden. Granted we're far from restoring the glory days, but at least we look to be heading upwards again. Can only think the request was made in private weeks (month?) ago.

Will be an interesting couple of days. Gosh, if it plays out until Monday Jim White will be frothing at the mouth and Sky Sports News will go to Defcon 1. They'll be cameras at Anfield, Melwood, Stamford Bridge, Torres' house, Abramovich's yacht, Kerry Dixon's shed; interviews with Chelsea pensioners, Stan Boardman, Ricky Tomlinson, Cilla Black, Tim Lovejoy. God, not Tim Lovejoy. Oh the humanity! Tim fucking Lovejoy.

What were we talking about?

I think Roman still has deep pockets and this recent activity has shown he is willing to spend. The fact Chelsea are likely to still be in the Champions League next year will also help them rebuild.

Anyway I'm sorry to stinking up your thread with my dirty Utd viewpoint - We were in the same situation not so long ago when our much loved, in it for the joy of football, star striker got all mercenary. It's not pleasent.

This is that last window where they can really exploit those deep pockets, which is why they seem desperate to nab a big name. The financial stuff from the summer onwards is going to count towards the financial fair play rules, so they'll be severely limited in regards to what Roman can pump in (oo-er missus!)

We're willing to spend. Our involvement in the CL is not an issue any more, FSG have deep pockets for the right players. We're making our record signing in the January transfer window, we've never done that.

Rooney is a thundercunt and that's what we expected of him. We thought Torres was better than that. Ah well. I just feel bad for all the kids who idolise him.

Got to love the hypocrisy.

When Charlie Adam hands in a transfer request he should be allowed to better himself, but when Torres does it he should honour his contract...

Who said this, exactly?

I thought the general opinion was he should stay at Blackpool.

I'm not sure anyone here said that, you're right though.

However there's a slight difference. Multi millionaire Torres who's on muchos money a week, compared to Adam who's not. Adam would secure a more solid financial future for himself, for Torres he could buy another gold plated unicorns to eat. Plus moving to Liverpool is certainly a big step up for Adam. Moving to Chelsea may arguably be a step up for Torres, yet not as big a one.

Personally I'm not bothered about

I guess, for Torres, he'd be in the Champions League this year and, probably, next year.

In that respect it's not about money but about winning trophies. With the best will in the World, I can't see Liverpool being in a position to win the league in the near future.

This is all a shame really; at a time where we should be looking to rebuild we shouldn't be losing our best players. Seems Kenny hasn't been able to convince him to stay then if it has gotten this far.

Selling to a rival (not so much of late, mind) isn't great business either; who was the last player of this magnitude to move between big clubs in the Premier League? (I'm talking of the big 4 here, so Tevez doesn't count).

My point was about Adam not Torres. It's a bigger step up for the Blackpool man than it would be for the Spaniard.
