I don't really care exactly what the fee is. You always pay a premium in January. You just don't want the club to be seen as a soft touch who'll pay whatever is necessary to force a deal through as that makes every subsequent deal harder. If Torres changed their risk calculations and helped persuade them to dig deeper, that's fine.

Bit concerned Torres' people seem to be briefing about his disillusion with the club. I know he's been fucked around for ages, and footballers can't afford to be patient, but I'd have hoped that behind the scenes the owners would have been able to reassure him about the future whatever their actual spending in January. I could cope with Torres leaving when the timing and fee suits us, but not with our best players running for the exits.

At the very least we've got a bit of cover now in case Chelsea come back with a real offer.

I bet if you look back in this thread plenty of you were talking about it being a figure around £12.7m.

Yep, some people did and that was based on newspaper reports. Which at the end of the day means nothing once we've sealed the deal and paid, what I believe, to be a fair price. Not a bargain but definitely not the market rate.

No. I don't understand how my opinion can be ridiculous - I pointed out the timing of the Torres speculation and the massively increased Suarez deal and that was met with the usual hissy fits. I'll comment as and when I please, it's not like I'm making things up and you're all quite happy to discuss transfer speculation, half of which probably is made up anyway.

No. You talk shit:

Yes, I'm sure that had Liverpool waited until Sunday to come back with their panicked offer of almost twice as much cash then Ajax would have turned them away.

It's funny that you think you know what our initial bid was, given that the club has remained very tight lipped throughout this deal. Ajax are the only ones that have been talking figures in the press, and one of the only other details of the initial bid (aside from the mooted £12.7m fee) was that Babel was offered as a make-weight. Which would take the initial bid to close to £19m. Not a far cry away from what it's ended up at.

Basically, you haven't a clue what you're talking about. Fuck off out of this thread, nobody in here gives a shite about your thoughts on anything to do with the club.

I thought that articles with no quotes from the people involved weren't relevant? That just says Saurez will talk to Ajax. Nothing to back it up.

Is logic banned from this thread?

Hang on...

So it was this thread that decided figures. Where's your valid quotes from those involved?

Smooth moves.

You know it's bad when Disciple is calling you a troll

£20ish million is pretty much what you'd expect for Suarez and even if Liverpool did bid lower it's all any team would do considering they don't appear to have had any competition for his signature.

Yes, resort to abuse because that makes your point much better.

I haven't seen any articles saying that it was £12.7m plus Babel, De Boer never mentioned that. They could then have offered £15-16m plus Babel and got an even better deal, going by your workings.

I'm probably just jealous because United haven't signed anyone.

Babel decided to go to Hoffenheim instead, so yeah.

why do people want to piss over this one slice of happiness we have in a season of anguish?

Man Utd are used to being in markets buying players and are bored because they haven't bought a big name since Berbatov!

Yes I realise Man Utd are 1st in the Premiership and they don't really need to buy anyone if thats a judge... I'm just saying fans love a bit of transfer action!

:(

I don't get to see much LFC in the flesh, but I did get to see Gerrard and Torres attacking the goal I was behind when they were in their pomp, absolutely unplayable, one of my favourite footballing memories.

Gutted if we lose him in such a fashion. Better be a massive fee.

rumours

I'm not going to get too worried until something more concrete occurs, but it seems to be growing, with a few semi-reliable sources claiming similar.

EDIT: Still no concrete info, but...

Fernando Torres has told Liverpool that he wants to leave, a move that will only fuel Chelsea’s confidence that an improved bid will allow them to sign the striker before the transfer window closes at 11pm on Monday.

The Barclays Premier League champions are prepared to offer £40 million in cash plus Daniel Sturridge, the England Under-21 striker, whom Liverpool inquired about taking on loan last month.

Liverpool rejected a straight cash offer of £35 million for Torres on Thursday and maintain that he is not for sale, but Chelsea are hopeful of capitalising on the player’s disenchantment at Anfield to get the deal done.

The Spaniard has not issued a written transfer request but has made it clear in a phone conversation with club officials that he would like Liverpool to enter formal negotiations with Chelsea.

Liverpool’s official position is that Torres, 26, is not for sale, but they would consider cashing in if he is adamant he wants to leave.

Yesterday, the Anfield club agreed to sign Luis Suárez, the Uruguay striker, from Ajax in a deal that could be worth £22.8 million. Suárez was signed to complement Torres, but there are increasing concerns that the pair may never play together. Liverpool also had a £6.5 million bid for Charlie Adam rejected by Blackpool .

By confirming Chelsea’s bid on Thursday, Liverpool have effectively put the ball in Torres’s court by placing the onus on him to force through the transfer. It is understood that his contract includes a buy-out clause enabling him to leave for £50 million, which was introduced by the previous Liverpool regime but comes into force only at the end of the season.

The West London club had a £25 million bid for Torres, who would be available for the remainder of Chelsea’s Champions League campaign, rejected last summer. They remain in negotiations with Benfica over David Luiz and have offered £24 million plus Nemanja Matic for the Brazil defender.

EDIT2: There's not much substance to that story either.

Indeed, no point keeping a player who wants to leave, best to just try and get as much money as we can, just like Ajax.

Having said that, it only gives us a couple of days to sign a replacement then, and given that we couldn't/wouldn't go after any other current Premiership strikers, might leave us with a front pairing with no experience in English football.

It's a rollercoster supporting this club. Wouldn't swap it for the world though.

I was just about to post the same thing. The thing is, who could we find to replace him now?

As I said before. It's why Chelsea have come in for him now. It benefits them in plenty of ways.

Still think there's nothing to it at the moment.

We seem to have shored up our leaks to the media under NESV, so this angle of Torres calling up 'club officials' and telling them to make it happen, whilst being under contract and not making a transfer request, when we don't need the money, with the player himself stating a couple of weeks ago that he is 'a professional, who honours his agreements/contracts'... nah.

If I was the board I wouldn't sell this window. There is sense in keeping an unhappy player if you haven't got any time to buy a replacement with his transfer fee, and especially if his mood might be changed by an up-turn in performances. You're probably better off letting the feel-good factor from the Suarez signing linger a little longer than a couple of hours, too.

surely selling him to chelsea would be a huge statement about our own future title credentials

if he wants to go then we can't help it but not to chelsea anything but a rival. Abroad and only abroad even if it means we get less

christ only liverpool can give me the high of suarez followed by the downer of our best player leaving rumours
