Liverpool FC confirmed today that manager Roy Hodgson has left the club by mutual consent.

Principal Owner John Henry commented: "We are grateful for Roy's efforts over the past six months, but both parties thought it in the best interests of the club that he stand down from his position as team manager. We wish him all the best for the future."

Roy Hodgson said: "Being asked to manage Liverpool Football Club was a great privilege. Any manager would be honoured to manage a club with such an incredible history, such embedded tradition and such an amazing set of fans. Liverpool is one of the great clubs in world football. I have, however, found the last few months some of the most challenging of my career. I am very sad not to have been able to put my stamp on the squad, to be given the time to bring new players into the club in this transfer window and to have been able to be part of the rebuilding process at Liverpool. The club has some great, world-class players, with whom it has been a pleasure to work and I wish the entire squad well for the rest of the season. I thank those with whom I have built up a close working relationship at the club for their loyalty and support during very testing times, and finally of course to the Liverpool fans, your passion and dedication to the club will see Liverpool at the top of the game once more."

Club legend Kenny Dalglish will assume control of team matters for Sunday's third round FA Cup tie against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Henry added: "We are delighted that Kenny Dalglish has agreed to step in and manage the team for Sunday's FA Cup tie at Old Trafford and for the remainder of the season.

"Kenny was not just a legendary footballer, he was the third of our three most successful managers - three giants. We are extraordinarily fortunate and grateful that he has decided to step in during the middle of this season."

Chairman Tom Werner said: "No one who cares for this great club has been happy with the way this season has unfolded and we have examined options and considered at length what is best for us going forward. Kenny will bring considerable experience to the position and provide management and leadership for the rest of the season."

I thought he'd go after the Man United game, no matter what the result. Can't say I'm sad to see him go. It's got to effect what we'll do in the transfer window though, some players won't want to sign if they don't know who'll they'll end up playing for.

Can somebody remove that link to that paper? I'm pretending to be outraged and I'm shouting about it, although in reality if there was a link to it in any other thread I'd propbably click on it. But in here to show what a great fan I am I'm going on about it like a cretin. I mean it's not like I actually have to tell other Liverpool fans about The Sun and what it has done and yet I feel compelled to bleat about it with the only expantion being in makes me seem like more of a fan. It makes no sense.

I was also being serious before, as we know AFTER Roy got appointed and after a few bad results all this stuff about his career win percentages came out, about how he has a small club mentality, about how he's never won anything.

Why doesn't this apply to Coyle? I am genuinely interested.

I don't think win percentages necessarily are that significant when different managers are in charge of different clubs with different players, resources and expectations. What's significant is whether a club improves or not under a manager's reign.

OH HEY DID EVERYONE JUST HEAR THAT... Oh, right.

Nice to see him magnanimous in defeat, saying that he wasn't given ample opportunity to put his mark on the apparently world-class squad. Er, yeah.

He didnt say world class squad... He said 'some great, world class players' I assumed he was talking about Torres and Gerrard... who have hardly been world class since he has been there.

Skysports are reporting that Kenny is in charge till the end of the season. Is that bullshit?

I wonder if Hodgson will try to get another job or just retire. Presumably the payout for his sacking will let him call it a day, or he could go into media work. This would be a very sour note to end his career on, though, even if it wasn't really all his fault. He was the wrong choice from the start, and when added the fact that they had sold important players without replacement, he was always doomed. Appointing Comolli makes you assume that the owners are interested in letting him develop a balanced squad, but this project doesn't seem to have started. Not a peep on the new stadium either, I assume? All the goodwill in the word won't help Dalglish if the club itself is on the wrong trajectory.

The new owners have a history of doing things for the long term, so I'm less concerned about any lack of immediate news on the stadium. I think the vast majority of Liverpool fans will give Kenny ample support for the rest of the season regardless of anything else.

Yeah, you are right in that expecting NESV to have moved heaven and earth already is unreasonable, given what they were lumped with. If you think about it, all they've really had a chance to do is appoint Comolli, sack Hogson and appoint Dalglish as caretaker. All sensible moves, and even if they have a quiet January (their first transfer window), the fans will accept that as long as they show ambition over the summer. They should appoint an excellent manager as early as they can, and providing the necessary means to let whoever that is and Comolli prepare for the new season. Presumably they have some kind of ten year plan, but another season like this is presumably untenable.

If Dalglish does well then why would they replace him at the end of the season? If he does badly we could be in deep shit. It's gonna be interesting.

I think giving Dalglish to the end of the season is the best thing they could do. It seems a lot of fans see him in a similar way Keegan was seen at Newcastle and for good reason saying he was so successful but he's been out of management for so long now that if they're thinking of giving him the role full time then at least they can see how it goes for the short term and make that decision final at the end of the season. If they want to appoint a manager at the very top of the tree, they'll stand a better chance in the summer when the new manager has more time to mould their own squad. I'm erring towards scepticism that Dalglish is the man for the long term but at least it'll give everyone a kick up the arse for the rest of the season

Not unsurprising news considering the press conference that was cancelled on Thursday.

I'll just get in early and say that Kenny was the wrong decision etc, etc, blah, blah.

He's a legend alright and I recall when he left Liverpool. I was shocked, somewhat heartbroken.

I really hope he does well and gives the players a big boost. Sunday is a funny old game to step into.

The dream might see him not lose another game all season and grab the title. Yeah!!!

Onwards and upwards! :)

I don't think Dalglish will be there for the long term, he'll just be there to not be Roy. I can see it going a bit wrong but I think at this point we only need to stay in the division. I just hope he doesn't do the same things as Roy, like 4-4-2, very late substitutions, horribly negative football etc.

And I do expect us to challenge for the Premiership this year. If even Rafa could get us in the top four I've no doubt Hodgson will challenge. Generally if a new manager is going to be a success you;ll see it straight away. Apart from with Ferguson.

I reckon we'll finish 3rd this year, less than 10 points behind.

We'll now never know if I was right or not. I was probably right.

Your point was generally that no matter the manager were going to finish 3rd. Are you not sticking by that now?
