yeah, Alan annoying Green was saying i bet Torres hopes its a boy, get him signed and have him playing up front with him next week! Was slightly amusing at the time but I do hate Green!

Great result last night though, Villa looked pretty poor but I'm glad we have shown yet again we are capable of scoring goals without Torres and Gerrard. For me, Lucas is starting to look like a key player. Composed on the ball, tracks back and tackles much better than he used to, I'm really starting to take to him. Meireles certainly looks like a dynamic centre midfielder too, it won't be long before he finds his shooting boots. Also, Roy has certainly brought the best out of Maxi, he looks bloody amazing compared to his first season or so. Personally I think he is a key attacker for us at the moment, looking every bit the player I've seen for Argentina in the past.

Roll on Newcastle on saturday, lets hope we can continue this decent form.

What position does Gerrard now play if fit on Saturday?

That midfield pairing is the future. Meireles and Lucas should not be broken up for Gerrard. For me, once Stevie's back he should be playing on the right or behind Torres, with Kuyt filling the other position. We play such a narrow midfield that perhaps he wouldn't mind being moved to the right, though I doubt it.

This is what i've been wondering/hoping, he had a very successful spell for us playing there a few years back.

I wouldn't hold my breath on that one. We all know what sort of reaction that decision would be likely to invoke from sections of the media. I'd like to think Gerrard would accept it and do his best, but I'm not so sure. I just hope Roy considers it but I'm preparing myself to see Meireles shunted back out on the right.

Gerrard is still your best player. You should build the team round him, not Lucas and Raul who've had about 5 good games between them this season. I'm sure they are the future but right now you need Gerrard more.

Gerrard's talents are wasted the further back he's pushed.

I disagree entirely, I think he's looked incredibly dangerous and just as effective playing a more traditional central midfield role.

Haven't seen it myself. Perfect example was when he came on against Napoli, came on to little attacking effect save for a few long balls and shots and in the last ten minutes when Lucas came on was absolutely rampant.

Do you think he has the discipline for that now?

He played there for the entire season that he won the PFA award, and he's only got more disciplined since then. I think his problem isn't a lack of discipline, it's more that he has a greater influence when he is freed up to attack more often. Unfortunately for us, because he is dynamic and has a cracking shot, some people think he should be at the heart of our midfield. His best performances have come when he's played behind the striker or on the right.

OK, Andy. How many good games has Gerrard had in central midfield this season, by your reckoning?

Meireles has looked class whenever he has been played in central midfield, and Lucas has been excellent for the last two months.

Two good points. it would be great to have Lucas and Meireles in the centre but I don't see Roy doing it. We also have looked effective when Torres has a striker up with him, so playing him up on his own and Gerrard behind might not be the best either for Roy's Liverpool.

Perhaps something like this.

--------------Reina

--Johnson---Soto---Sktel----Konchesk

----------Lucas---Meireles

-----Gerrard----------------Maxi

-----------Ngog------Torres

A narrow midfield I know, but with Maxi and Gerrard being able to float and change position, Meireles coming through the middle as well. Johnson bombing down the wing (pity Konchesky ain't as effective in that) who knows, it might work)

You've then got a strong bench of Cole, Kuyt, Jovanovic, Babel.

At this moment in time, on form, Maxi, Lucas, Meireles should not be dropped.

And January shopping, bring in a better left back and a striker that we don't have to drop straight in the team and expect to score 20 goals but one who can sit on the bench and learn what the premiership is about.

I'd be happy to see something like this:

-------------Reina-----------

Johnson---Soto--Skrtel--Konchesky

------------Lucas------------

---Gerrard--Meireles--Cole

-----Torres------Kuyt

It is quite narrow, but it would give us a hell of a lot of power through the middle.

Club have announced that kids go free to the Utrecht match - for every adult ticket you can apply to take four kids free with you.

So if you know any little uns, I really recommend you try and take them, should be a fun atmosphere and it's the cheapest you can take a family with you.

He just seems to wander more now than he used to. He always did it for England, which was largely the problem with him and Lampard being together, but he always seemed to be tidier at Liverpool. The last few times I've seen him play for Liverpool though last/this season he's doing it there now. It's not just coming deep to get the ball, it's chasing it around like a school-kid. It's obvious what he's doing, trying to get the ball to get the team back into the match (and it's hard to say it is a bad thing) but I can't help but think that if he played with that mentality now a large amount of the time Liverpool will end up without anyone on the right at all. Or Johnson will push forward even more than usual leaving a gaping hole behind him.

See, I thought the 'problem with him and Lampard being together' was actually that Stevie was always the one being tasked with playing deep and running the play. You're basically cutting his legs off by doing that. Playing from the right would free him up to be more involved in the attacking play, and we play with such a narrow midfield that he'd still be involved in a lot of the midfield play.

As for the part I've highlighted: I'm not sure if you've seen any of our recent performances, but that is basically what's been happening. The only difference being it has either been Kuyt or Meireles that have spent a lot of their time pushing infield or hitting the box. Gerrard would suit the role better than either of them, I think.

Absolute bollocks.

Why? Every time he had a Villa player run at him, he looked like he was going to shit himself. He settled down a bit after we cheered him but he was still very shaky when getting run at and most of their attacking play in the first half came down his side.

Villa were shite but they still had some moments first half.

Yeah keep saying it. But it's complete bollocks. He had a good game. I don't mind Aurelio coming on in midfield but only an abosolute tool would suggest he play left back.

So Meireles has been voted player of the month. What do you guys make of him so far? I can tell you from what I know of watching him for Porto for years that he has a lot more to give still, but he is finding his feet now.

He's looked great when played with Lucas, their partnership looks very promising. A certain subnormal that posts in this thread would have you believe otherwise, but don't listen to him. Have a look at their pass stats in the few games that they've played together, or just compare the performances/results to what we've been getting with a Gerrard/another midfield pairing.
