Liverpool Football Club

To be fair was anyone expecting anything else? Rafa doesn't really have a winning mentality, he's happy to settle for draws all the time. 5th in the league with your rivals leading the league with an average player age of 74. Sounds about right.

Yeah nice one.

I think you'll find they're 6th actually! He's suffering from the squad going properly past their shelf-life and not being suited to what is more open football, and that'll cost him his job very soon most likely. The big clubs in Italy have all been through a rough season in recent times, its just Inter's turn really. They need to spend a massive amount of money on renovations to maintain a top position (defensively especially) but probably can't actually afford to do so until the highly paid guys retire.

You really believe that? A team that just won the domestic double and the Champions League?

So what we could say, is if we got Mourinho in, he could motivate a Rafa squad to the title...But it is unlikely Rafa could motivate a Mourinho squad. ;)

*Please note, this is a tongue in cheek comment, not to be taken seriously*

Its not really the entire team (although Stankovich is getting on too, as is Milito but the way he plays he'll go on for ages), its more their defence. Mourinho set them up in a way that meant they wouldn't be exposed nearly as much, Benitez has not. You can't rely on Materazzi, Walter Samuel, Javier Zanetti, Alvaro Recoba and Lucio forever, but Inter really have little choice right now as their defence is severely lacking anyone decent that isn't 30 or older. Maicon is 29, but then they've got Rivas (AKA the Colombian Titus Bramble) and (the talented) Santon and that's it for their regulars. Playing a more open game as they've been trying to do its painfully clear they're in trouble back there, players with even a modicum of pace are causing them trouble and when they come up against someone with a lot who knows how to use it they look horribly underprepared. Its not just Bale either, Krasic was causing them all kinds of trouble and Robinho was having a very productive time of it until he was sac'd after the red card in the derby. They didn't look particularly comfortable with Zlatan coming at them in that game either and he's hardly a speed demon.

Well, see, that's what they call a backhanded insult, you know?

Nah, you're all right Ramone. I thought you'd be more on board with quite a serious criticism of Rafa though, given its his fault they're playing wrong and having it glaringly exposed. I mean, they couldn't even beat AC with an extra man for over 30 minutes last week, in fact they were almost less of a threat with that man advantage!

Squad suddenly in the space of a few weeks too old

Not being suited to the open (and by definition better) way that Rafa suddenly has decided he wants his team to play

Hey it happens at all the big clubs in Italy, it's just Inter's turn.

Needs big money to turn it around.

Stick it to the man!

He shouldn't really be playing open football if they can't cope should he? Which they definitely can't do, and so he should be changing his approach, right? So why isn't he?

Well I think it's probably more than that. Like when scholari took over at Chelsea, there was talk about the lovely open football he wanted them to play. They started losing instead and people said Chelsea were too old and passed it then Hiddink took over and turned it around.

So by saying he hasn't got the players to play how he wants, yeah sure that's his fault, but it sort of said with a caveat, you know, like, sure he's doing rubbish but, WELL HE IS TRYING TO IMPROVE THE WAY THEY PLAY.

Rafa showed with us he's best at not losing. With us he stuggled against a team that sat back. Well that's Italian football!

But this isn't to have a go at Rafa, as I said it was a stupid job to take for him. I just thought it a bit off people going to more effort defending Rafa's job at Inter than defending our manager's job.

And they'll probably smash Twente. Rafa was also good at pulling out results when he was under the most pressure.

That's a fair point, however when Scolari took over he had a back line almost entirely in its prime, with only a couple of older players in Belletti and Carvalho. Benitez does not have that luxury, despite wanting to change the way they play he should be accepting that it really isn't going to work and adapting to it.

However this is the Liverpool thread, not the Inter/Rafa Benitez one, so I'll leave it there and say see you on the weekend :)
