Lucas has of late shown up the trend for the need to have instant success. He is a player who has grown into his role and is emerging as the player we hoped he would.

We crave success too instantly these days, players, coaches and teams no longer get the time to evolve.

As said, Dogsout and myself were beating the drum for Lucas at the start of last season, he is now finally stepping out of the shadow of Alonso, Gerrard & Mascherano. He is becoming a player that is vital to the spine of the team. This isn't just based on performances this season, he has shown glimpses of this his entire career, the thing he lacked was maturity and confidence in his own abilities.

He was a quite expensive brazilian prospect when we bought him and for whatever reason he didn't look very good for four years. I don't think that is writing him off too soon. I don't think a few glimpses over this time is enough. It could be argued you give any player a few seasons of starting most games for Liverpool and eventually they'll improve.

I hope this is the beginning of Lucas being good because I like his attitude but I'm not super confident.

Dogsout swore to me on his great grandfather's grave that babel was going to be a superstar.

On Football Weekly they reckon he impresses in the Brazil team. Who knows what that means these days, although they're better than us reet?

I put Lucas in my Fantasy League team at the start of the season, as my last act of faith. I then took him out after he wasn't doing much. Probably a bad choice for points anyway, should have stuck with Danny Murphy :sherlock:

I've been banging on about how great Lucas is for 4 years now :quote: Going to the game you can really see just how much work he does, particaulrly covering the space when the full backs go forward. It got to the point when the people who were saying how poor he was had either never been and seen him play live and so were making their assumptions based on MOTD highlights, or simply didn't have a fucking clue about football

I am actually quite a big fan of Lucas, he very much reminds me of a young Iniesta (watch early footage of him and he played in a very similar way to Lucas, with early one touch passing keeping the ball moving freely between his team mates. I pray he grows to become a similar player.)

Lucas only reminds me of a young Iniesta in that they both look sort of sick.

The young Iniesta always clearly had talent. Lucas' only talent is to make everyone around him look amazing.

having watched Lucas numerous times he's just not good enough in the central position -

The funny thing is, Lucas' performance on Sunday wasn't his first great performance for us, he's done it many times before. Fans like the_debaser and Hoodedclaw have either simply made him a scapegoat or don't really know what they are talking about. He was awesome on Sunday, I only recall him making one bad pass in what was a very congested midfield with very little time nor space. According to the stats in the Times yesterday, both him and Yossi had 4 key passes to create chances each. Not one single Man U player played more than 1 key ball all game.

It's easy to say he's been great for years, but he hasn't. He progressed last year that much is obvious, but he was still a bit error prone and petulant. Infact that's the one thing that's always bugged me about him, he likes to fall a bit dramatically and have a moan to the ref, I prefer players who just get the hell on with it.

To be fair though I always said how great Danny Murphy was, I still can't understand why he was let go. Ourtagious.

I also feel he'd have done a lot better than Fat Frank in our England midfield; a bit of nous and passing and a bit of losing the ball would have done us a lot better than the kick and rush ridiculousness that pervades the England team.

I was sure that he had the potential to be great. I did also say (before we signed him) that he was very raw and that he'd need a lot of work. You're right, though; I did think he'd make it here.

I understand why you don't want to get carried away by Lucas just yet but I think his recent performances warrant a little faith.

Lucas was 20 years old when he signed for us! I'd be hard pushed to name any world class central midfielders at 20 years old, aside from the extremely rare talents of the world, and you pay a lot more than £10m for them. We've been hemorrhaging central midfielders since his arrival, and he's been expected to somehow fill the gap. Momo, Mascherano and Alonso all gone, he gets dumped into the first team and given waaaaaay more starts and minutes than he was ever meant to get at that stage, and when he isn't an equal to them he's to be written off as "not good enough?" Be rational, people.

Even if he had been consistently shit from 2007 to present (he hasn't, by the way), it's STILL writing him off too soon. Not every player is Fabregas or Messi and hitting their peak at 18 years old, and especially not in Lucas' position. Drop Jay Spearing right into the first team right now for a whole season and see how he fares. You can say that it's not the same because we paid money for Lucas and he was in the first team squad, but he sure as hell wasn't meant to be more than an understudy in his first couple of seasons.

What is it about Liverpool supporters and writing off young/squad players who have been asked to do the impossible?

I'm glad Rafa wasn't as reactionary as the Lucas persecutors, or we might not have got to see him perform like he did against Chelsea at the weekend.

Not enough pressing.

Totally. Compare the pressing against Chelsea to what you saw tonight. We just weren't doing it.

We'd wait until they got to the edge of our area and then try to close them down.

Oddly enough, the pressing returned for stoppage time. Just weird.

Tiredness was definitely playing a part as the Chelsea game took a lot out of us. Kuyt was wasted and maybe should've been brought on for the last twenty minutes or so.

Anybody care to comment on Cleverley's performance (please!)?

Good. Busy, but lacking end product.

EDIT: Thought Wigan were pretty good all round, but our lack of pressure definitely made them look better. They were that untroubled that on numerous occasions one of their players could stop, put his foot on the ball and have a good look around for a team mate. And this was in our third of the pitch. Contrast that to us where we were always looking to either get rid to the nearest man, try a hopeful pass/punt to their third or just hoofing it away in a blind panic.
