Maxi was my man of the match, was at the heart of our best moves and played on the wing and through the middle pretty well. Nice, positive performance though still a bit shakey at the back (Skrtel, what the fuck were you doing at the end?)

Was listening to some of the 5Live commentary this afternoon and they were questioning what exactly Meireles does for us. Now I haven't seen a great deal of him (mainly at the World Cup), but I understand what they were saying - that he doesn't really excel at anything.

What have people made of him?

He didn't have his best game today but he wasn't bad. I don't understand how they can question what 'he does'. He's box-to-box and he's looked pretty good at it, on the whole. I'm hoping Roy has finally seen sense and will no longer flirt with the idea of using him as a wide midfielder, although that did happen again after Cole went off.

What I just don't understand is how Torres got the winner yesterday after it had come out he refused to play again under Hodgson.

Rumours abound that there were talks with the squad and different tactics were ultilized (i.e. not Hodgson's).

The tactics certainly were different - more Benitez than Hodgson yesterday. The kind the players would've been more used to. Not saying that makes the rumour true though.

Didn't Torres notice Hodgson was stood at the side of the pitch? I didn't see all the match - I presume Hodgson didn't shout anything without going back to the bench to ask for permission first? Whose tactics were involved when Liverpool did well on Thursday?

No offense to the normal ones in this thread, but some Liverpool fans are fucking mental.

Some shitehawk on RAWK that can't admit the possibility he was wrong says that there were talks with the squad and different tactics were ultilized (i.e. not Hodgson's).

Fixed that for you there. You guys are absolutely priceless sometimes.

The tactics seen on Thursday were the same as the rest of the games this season, with Napoli's wastefulness in the final third ensuring a 'good' result (the kind of fixture people would've expected us to win last season).

When the fans saw the performance yesterday, especially the tactics, they naturally questioned why the team played in a style that none of Hodgson's previous teams had played. Couple this with his comment a few weeks back that he wouldn't change his approach (tactics) that had served him so well during his career thus far and you can see why the tongues would be wagging and rumours circulating.

You've never heard of player/squad unrest related to their manager's tactics? It's happened before in football and is not that outlandish a concept.

Like I said, not saying I necessarily believe it, but it's not at the tin-hat-wearing conspiracy levels you're making it out to be.

About the tactics:

There was a dramatic change in our fundamental approach, but Roy had clearly orchestrated it. While we didn't play with a higher defensive line than usual (as I've seen suggested in other places), our midfield was set up noticeably further up the pitch, and much closer to Torres than usual. And we didn't set out to contain; the team imposed itself on the opposition with a high intensity approach - fast passing and aggressive pressing off-the-ball.

In the second half, I noticed Roy standing up, flailing his arms about and turning red, so I began to question whether or not the team was just ignoring his instructions. Shortly afterwards one of the pitch-side microphones picked up Roy screaming at our midfield to "get closer, get closer". I could hardly believe my ears, but there you go.

That sort of high intensity approach requires a lot of organisational preparation, and Hodgson should take the credit for the dramatic improvement to team shape, just as he has been receiving criticism for our shit displays. Perhaps it has finally sunk in and we'll keep improving now. I suppose we'll have a better idea once we've played Bolton; if we manage to press like that again, and the midfield stays close to Torres like that, then I'll start feeling optimistic again.

What I just don't understand is how Torres got the winner yesterday after it had come out he refused to play again under Hodgson.

So you don't think that it's important what rumours come out and in what context?

If every rumour was true we'd have a joint management team of Mourinho, Capello and Martin O'Neill, our squad would comprise no players and every player who's ever played against us, a new stadium that we share with Everton but they won't play there because it's ours, while Gerrard's out on a Vespa every night cutting anyone who says that Alex's sister fucked him even though she doesn't have a sister and he'd fall off the scooter anyway.

The fact that two of our biggest names are said to be unhappy, as well as being the two who have come in and embodied the last regime's successes, to the extent that these rumours have legs suggests that either they're trying to put pressure on the manager (ergo, bad) or that they're that unhappy with things that it's plausible.

No different than the widespread stories that came out of Chelsea during the Grant era that it was player power running the team.

I wish non Liverpool fans would fuck off out of this thread. There's a general football thread and a dormant Chelsea thread.
