Anyway, where is all this Rijkaard talk coming from? Has something happened I don't know about?

Liverpool fly out to Italy today with Roy Hodgson's future clouded in uncertainty after Frank Rijkaard left Galtasaray, suggesting that he could replace the current Kop boss.

Hmmmmmm...

Purslow's stepping down then:

Christian Purslow has confirmed that he is standing down from his role as Liverpool's managing director.

The 46-year-old replaced Rick Parry in overseeing the day-to-day business at Anfield last summer but has tendered his resignation following the successful takeover by New England Sports Ventures (NESV) last week.

However Purslow, who was appointed by previous owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks, will remain at the club as a non-executive director and general advisor to NESV.

Wonder if that's in any way related to Benitez's recent outburst. Probs not.

Why do you think it's unwarranted?

I can see why some supporters wouldn't like him, seeing him as the guy who got rid of Rafa - but I think most would agree we were playing some pretty terrible football last season, the 2nd half especially, so it was probably time for a change.

I don't think he covered himself in glory either by appointing Hodgson, someone I don't think many fans wanted, and appointing him over Kenny.

But most of the abuse seemed to stem from him being an appointment by H&G, and so he seemed forever tainted by whatever they did - demonstrations against H&G invariably also included Purslow. I think we could quite clearly see last week that he only wanted what was best for the club, trying hard to bring in the right owners and fighting to get rid of the current ones.

So yes, I'd say the level of abuse he got was unwarranted.

But anyway. New owners, soon-to-be new board. New manager next?

And a lot of decisions that Purslow et. al took, as damaging as they might have seemed to Rafa and/or the fans, need to be viewed in the light of desperately trying to stop the club being landed in debtor's prison and to find a buyer. Rafa may have preferred full control, more money to spend, and not to be sacked. Fans may have preferred someone other than Woy to be given the job. While the ownership situation was still unresolved, I didn't see Hiddink or Mourinho beating a path to our door.

Graham, do you believe Rafa loves the club?

I'm not sure what that means. People on the footballing side of things must feel differently about their employers and colleagues than we feel about our club. Rafa seems to retain loads of affection for LFC and the fans. I assume the relationship between him and the board, and possibly some senior players was pretty bad by the end, but I guess I'll have to wait for the books to come out before I'll know what went on in the last few seasons.

Not a leading question :)

Just saying that I felt that Rafa loved the club to the extent that he was just fighting for whatever he could get but he'd 'make do' until new owners came.

Granted he seemed to take his eye off on field matters but everyone did.

Ian Ayre is surely likely to stay as he's done a fine job so far. Dalglish as Director of Football once Hodgson's sacking is confirmed as well I'd think. Obviously he'll perhaps have to take the reins temporarily but I can't see it being long term.

How long a contract is Roy on? Presumably the club will need to buy that out to get rid of him.

3 years but apparently there's a clause that allows new owners to sack him within 28 days and pay him off with a year.

He hired a solicitor to threaten anyone who posted his address online.

Even though as a director it was freely available on the internet anyway.

To be fair, I think I'd get a bit antsy if I was being sent horrible letters.

You make it sound like a certainty. Don't get my hopes up :P

The consensus on Twitter is that he's not travelled, but it could be more to do with Purslow/Hodgson going.

Also, on the Hodgson issue, this:

@bensmith_times: Reports of discontent among senior #lfc players are bang on the money. Hodgson's days looked numbered

Apparently Reina, for one, isn't happy about being made to play more like an English goalie.

He's made some blinding mistakes this season, very English of him.

Does anyone really think Dalglish is a good move? He's done nothing in the game for ages. I know as a player he was a legend, but I can't see him doing anything management wise for Liverpool these days.

There's definitely a wisp of misty-eyed romanticism to the idea.

I'd be worried it could turn out rather like Shearer/Newcastle. The golden boy returns to drag the club from relegation and back into contention, except I don't think they won another game and were still relegated. Shearer shuffles off back to the MotD pundit's bench and it's never mentioned again.

the guy was a fucking saint I tell ya!

I reckon houliier loved the club more.

But you're right, until last season we were awesome.

I honestly think that the fans love of rafa is some form of mental illness, like mass hysteria. After the first two seasons we thought he was the man and we made songs and banners and rafa came to the pub!

To accept rafa wasn't a good manager would be to accept that dreams don't come true and that. And seems nobody wants to believe that.

The fans don't like the board still because they quite rightly sacked rafa.

I really am ashamed of our fans and the treatment of hodgson after 8 league games.

If dalglish came out and said "that rafa was a bit shit" the world would expolde.
