Liverpool Football Club

It's not exactly come at the best time has it.

Hopefully it won't affect him - sounds like things just got out of hand.

Anyway, I doubt he would've played against Preston, but I don't think he'll even be on the bench - keep him out of the limelight this week.

Methinks:

Cavalieri

Darby Skrtel Hyypia Dossena

El Zhar Spearing Alonso Reira

Keane Babel

Subs: Gulacsi, Carra, Lucas, Benayoun, Ngog

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez says Steven Gerrard has his "full support and backing" following his captain's arrest after an alleged brawl.

Benitez added: "Steven explained to me what had happened and I told him he has my full support and backing, along with everyone else at the football club.

Sounds like it was pretty minor then, which is good news.

He's been charged with assault & affray hasn't he? Although he hasn't got a chequered past like Joey Barton, which should help him.

I heard the guy who got lamped was a Manc; egging Gerrard on or something.

Oh well, in that case his only previous is publicly wishing death on every Manchester United fan. Don't worry, I'm sure the prosecution would ignore that in court :)

It's sounding more and more like Torres will be ready for Stoke away, maybe even fit enough to start. He's been throwing himself about in training by all accounts; it's all sounding very positive. We've coped and started to play some blinding football in his absence which is obviously pleasing but he could take us to another level once he's back. Hopefully Stevie can put this nonsense to one side and continue to show the rest of the league up with his performances; he's been phenomenal of late.

Edit: Just remembered, Skrtel's back. Good times.

I'm curious, I've never heard of that and I follow Liverpool quite closely. Source?

It's the sort of thing that websites/news stories don't ever pick up on. Just in case...guess it's too controversial?

The source is his autobiography. Actually, that's not technically true, the source is the newspaper that took his quotes out of context and twisted them into a piece of tabloid sensationalism. Gerrard quickly distanced himself from the headlines :)

I would like the Man United fans to really understand my views though. The headlines in the two serialisations were bang out of order, way over the top. I have a fantastic respect for Manchester United.

Anyhoo, the victim is photographed in today's papers and he doesn't look particularly beat up. Certainly not the kind of beat up that would lead to a major public figure being imprisoned. Shame it didn't happen a week earlier, then we could have made some jokes about all him wanting for Christmas is his two front teeth.

I've heard a first-hand account of what happened, but it's from an Everton fan, so it may be wishful thinking more than anything else and is probably dodgy to go into.

EDIT: It's technically not first-hand - it's a first-hand account which I was told last night by someone, which makes it second-hand, I guess.

Fair dues, the rivalry is kind of an accepted thing. We've pushed it and Mr 'I Hate Scousers' Neville is certainly pushing it back. Had never heard that particular quote,

I've heard so much about a wide range of footballers past and present that I'm loathe to believe anything without witnessing it for myself. I have fond memories of bumping into Steven Gerrard in McDonalds in 2001 and him sitting with us and signing everybody's cartons and packaging in that so maybe I'm a little biased. The cynic in me can't help but think this is just another little scumbag trying to get an out of court settlement or paid by the papers for the inevitable 6 page spread.

Come on guys, Gerrard's no saint. It's quite possible he punched somebody in the gob. It's no real biggie though. Unless he threw a glass which would be bad after that girl got killed in a similar fashion just a couple of days ago.

Let's just hope he is treated as somebody not famous would be. But it's a bit off to blame the guy who got punched or whatever.

According to Gedo (long established as being in the know) over at RAWK this is the team:

---------------Cavalieri

-----Carra Hyypia Agger Insua

------------Alonso Masch

------Babel---Gerrard---Riera

----------------Keane

If that turns out to be correct, and Gedo's usually spot on, then I'm impressed at the strength of the team Rafa's putting out.

Ah we should be at least 2 up by now. Keane could have done with banging that home.

We could really do with a 2nd before half time...
